Thread 51 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer 24 - End of Uni Yr 2

1000 replies

Oblomov24 · 17/05/2024 15:15

2024 Summer, end of year 2 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Well done to your ds @EasilyDefined , that’s good news! What do you and dd think of Lincoln?

Decorhate · 06/07/2024 12:50

@crazycrofter He’s doing it in London though a not very easily accessible area… he will commute from home as we live not far outside. I think it will be number crunching for a market research company but he’s a bit vague about it!

craggyrat · 06/07/2024 16:43

Nothing much to report here. DS working at Yorkshire Show for the week and did well in exams. @easilydefined good news on the merit - know what you mean about seeing it officially

Well done to your ds @EasilyDefined , that’s good news! What do you and dd think of Lincoln?

We love it, never been here before and wish it was a bit closer to home. But there are fast trains from London. This is the first time I've ever been away with just DD and we are having a nice time (for logistical reasons DH has done her other open days with her and I did most of DS's).

EwwSprouts · 07/07/2024 00:50

Loving hearing what the globe trotters are all up to. Gives me hope of more tolerance going forward. Including towards bats :)

@EasilyDefined Great news about your DS. Are you and DD seeing a couple of open days together? Lincoln is lovely. Many moons ago I did some consultancy at the university and it had a friendly feel. The highlight though was as regular as clockwork the Red Arrows would take to the sky for practice as I was driving down.

No big news here either. DS has gone away for a 'hockey fest'.Tents in a field and the possibility of his first ever match on grass. Amazing to think grass as surface is a novelty.

PhotoDad · 07/07/2024 07:28

I'm also following the globe-trotter stories with interest (and amusement)! DS is now considering a gap year which might well result in similar tales...DD returned home yesterday, she's staying for a fortnight. She was in fine form and it was nice to all be re-united.

Cantonet · 07/07/2024 10:40

Has anyone any advice on cloned number plates & parking tickets?
Dd1 has just been sent 2 parking tickets for 2 consecutive days for 7 seconds each. She said she was in bed asleep & it's not her car. Apparently this sort of thing is becoming increasingly common 😯

Delphigirl · 07/07/2024 11:58

Hi cantonet - I had that, a ticket from a bit of south London I had never been to. Irritatingly I had actually been working in London that day, but I had travelled in by train and my car was in a railway car park in Oxfordshire all day. I wrote saying “not me and here is why” and provided evidence that I had paid for parking at the rail station that morning, (which wasn’t evidence of much really) but I never heard from them again. I suspect the plate had been on a different type or colour of car or something.

Seeline · 07/07/2024 12:33

Do the tickets have photos of the car?
If so is there anything obvious to show that it's not her car? I knew someone who had this and the photo showed a car of an obviously different colour so was easy to prove.
You'd think if you'd gone to the bother of cloning plates you'd check the basics like that!

Comefromaway · 07/07/2024 14:58

My daughter had a Dart Charge ticket. At the time her car was parked on our drive 150 miles away & she herself was in another town driving a work provided van. We cross checked her work schedule.

unfortunately my dad received the ticket as her car is registered to his address. He panicked and paid it as she was away and she got in a mess once before with parking tickets. He’d also mistaken the Dart Charge (miles away) with Merseytunnell (which is close to the area she was working at the time).

icanbewhatiwant · 07/07/2024 16:31

I had a fine arrive in the post from London, apparently driving on a road that vehicles shouldn't drive along. I was at home in Suffolk at the time. I looked at the footage online. I zoomed in on the number plate and my last 3 reg. letters are DMO this was clearly BMO I appealed, I sent a photo from our cctv of my car at home, at the time, plus told them it was clearly the wrong reg. plate. Behind the car they were saying was mine there was a white transit van. I put it the reg. number I could see on the dvla website, with the B instead of D. It showed a white transit van. So that proved it was the number of the van. I received a letter saying my appeal unsuccessful. So we went back to the video again. Did a screenshot of the car that was supposedly mine. We could see the lights were in a different place on the car to mine as was the reg plate. So I sent back a screenshot of the car on they'd video and one of mine. I had a letter saying they could see it's a different car and that I need to inform the police my registration no. has been cloned. It was so obvious it was a B not a D. So these things need checking.

Cantonet · 07/07/2024 17:01

Thank you all 🙏🏼
DD1 has reported it to the police this morning. It's exactly the same colour & make as hers. But hers has writing in the reg plate & the other one doesn't. Plus the fake car has silver initials on the back. She's sent this info to the parking company but they are notorious - 1* rating for not letting people off.

Delphigirl · 07/07/2024 20:09

Then let them sue her for it and she will have a few hours at her local county court in about 10 months time where they will throw out her claim (but sadly v little in the way of costs)

Cantonet · 07/07/2024 23:13

If it goes that far @Delphigirl would we need legal representation?
I'm tempted to do that. So fed up of these rotten parking firms. Last time I got another ticket I had to appeal to the land owner. As on appeal they wouldn't cancel the fine even though I really had a ticket. Luckily I was successful that time.

Shimy · 08/07/2024 20:10

@EasilyDefined Well done to DS on his foundation yr, that most be a relief.

@Decorhate Your lucky your ds will be going from home, i'd hoped ds2 will also be going from home (placements begin in September) but unfortunately he will be moving to Reading for the year. We're currently room hunting infact.

@Cantonet - Cloned number plates is a completely new one to me, no idea it was even possible. I hope you manage to get it sorted it must be so annoying. It seems the burden of proof has been shoved in your lap. Funnily, I received a Dart charge ticket a few months ago for a date i had not travelled via Dart although i had gone through there 2 days before, but i had paid the charge online before i left home. Unfortunately, i couldn't find the receipt. I was very confused but in the end paid the ticket. I'm now wondering wether it was a scam?

Decorhate · 08/07/2024 20:42

@Shimy He had his first day today, journey was not too bad. Looks
like he will only have to go in to the office 3 days week so better than expected (as the train + tube would cost him £20-25 a day).

Older Ds is starting his graduate job in September so has also been looking for accommodation- taking a bit of a chance on only seeing places online. Fingers crossed it works out ok. He’ll be sharing with strangers.

Delphigirl · 08/07/2024 21:04

No absolutely not. She will just need to file a defence saying it is not her car, the plates are cloned, attaching photos and whatever else she thinks proves it, and then turn up at court and tell her story to the judge.

Shimy · 08/07/2024 23:41

@decorhate That sounds great, to be honest I'm a bit miffed DS has to go in almost everyday (although he actually prefers going in so suits him fine). When ds1 did his, it was similar to your ds, just 2 days in the office a week. I was hoping both DS's would be at home at least for the another yr. DS1 could move out anytime soon for good and so it would've been a lovely yr of bonding, but I'm overall just glad they got placements to buttress their degrees.

Heifer · 09/07/2024 08:00

Good luck to the Nottingham crew that receive their exam results today. And to others due soon.

Got to be honest, we are pretty nervous here as DD doesn't think she has done that well. She didn't finish 2 exams (ran out of time), says the extra 30
Mins she gets for being dyslexic just isn't enough.
She already failed a module in January so If she fails another now she will have to do resits for both but if she passes them all she won't.

Have enjoyed ready about all your students exploits. Really sorry to hear about the return home early due to the bat, didn't see that coming!
Was nice to see the Mumsnet bat make an appearance though. Seems another lifetime that appeared for the 1st time.

We went to see the Beyond Van Gogh immersion experience in Liverpool at the weekend and loved it.
Can definitely recommend it.
I believe its in permanently in London and travelling around the uk for short periods too.
Liverpool until 24th July
Glasgow 11th July - 4th
August
Birmingham 1st Aug - 1st Sept.

crazycrofter · 09/07/2024 09:42

That sounds interesting @heifer. Dd is also nervous about her results as her Jan ones were terrible - all passed but an average below 50 😬 She really needs to up her year 2 average. She’s in Italy at the moment though so distracted.

Hope ds finds some decent accommodation soon @shimy!

mummyinbeds · 09/07/2024 10:49

Morning Nottingham crew. DS actually got out of bed by 10am to check his results which is a result in itself. Much to his and my surprise, he's passed everything. No resits, no year out before he can go to France for the year. He even got a first in one French exam (I still put this down to his A level teacher because his French attendance at uni was about 10%). I'm so relieved and also panicking that we have to sort French Uni out now. I'd put it on hold until today expecting him not to be going. I hope all our Notts students are happy 🤞

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/07/2024 11:05

Well done to your DS @mummyinbeds DS passed all here too thankfully, but still getting very mediocre grades. I really don't know what he is doing wrong and I know he's going to be thinking the same. But no resits at least!

Good luck to the other Notts students today and all the others still waiting.

crazycrofter · 09/07/2024 11:41

Well done to your ds @mummyinbeds ! And good luck with getting him to France!

Dd has told me that overall grades are out but not what hers are! Which makes me worry she’s in the same boat as @JustHereWithMyPopcorn ds. She’s told me that she got 70 in the personality module though , so I suspect she’s leading with the good news! I knew she’d do well in that, it was the only one she enjoyed I think.
