This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

So well summarised @singingstones it really has been a crazy few months looking back.
One thing I’m noticing with our young people is so much anxiety, not all of them of course, but it seems so much more prevalent than when I was younger, is this a result of covid? Social media pressures? I was only 20 when I had DS and so a lot of my close school friends have very young children and I do wonder/worry what their teen years will be like.

@Benjispruce4 thats fantastic news! What a boost for her!

PhotoDad · 01/11/2022 20:28

@singingstones Yes, it's hard, really hard, to remember that A-level exams were only six months ago!

@Fiddlersgreen I do think Covid has a lot to answer for. Our DC had GCSEs scrapped at short/no notice, in some cases after an intense "OMG revise everything now!" month, and never really recovered. I teach in a secondary school, and our current Year 9s missed that really, really, important Y6 -> Y7 transition. As a result, they are way less able to deal with people/groups than year-groups younger or older than them by a year. I know that isn't just my school!

singingstones · 01/11/2022 20:30

Haha Benji, great news! 👏👏👏

Is she retaking anything or are these unconditional?

singingstones · 01/11/2022 20:37

I think anxiety levels were maybe already higher in this generation than in ours, but covid and cuts to camhs and other support have both made things worse.

Benjispruce4 · 01/11/2022 20:45

It’s unconditional so with her grades in hand. It’s a different course but related - Social policy and criminal justice at York, Politics and International Relations at Reading. Waiting to hear on Sociology at U of Sheffield and same at Surrey.

omnishambles · 01/11/2022 20:45

Great news @Benjispruce4

Benjispruce4 · 01/11/2022 20:46

Oh and Sociology at Lincoln not replied yet.

Piggywaspushed · 01/11/2022 20:48

Thrilled for your DD benji.

singingstones · 01/11/2022 20:53

Great courses there, how brilliant that York and Reading are in already. She can take her time to consider all the options once decisions are in. Does she have an order of preference yet or will that depend on offer holder days?

crazycrofter · 01/11/2022 20:58

That’s great news @Benjispruce4 ! Does she have the grades they usually ask for? I’m wondering if applying grades in hand gives you an advantage?! Brilliant that she’s got the option of York again after all.

KingscoteStaff · 01/11/2022 21:07

That’s fantastic @Benjispruce4 - how brilliant to be able to enjoy her gap year with a secure offer waiting for her!

Benjispruce4 · 01/11/2022 21:08

Those two courses require BBB and she has BBC hence her surprise.

Comefromaway · 01/11/2022 21:47

Fantastic news Benji

EspeciallyD · 01/11/2022 22:22

So pleased for your DD @Benjispruce4

EwwSprouts · 01/11/2022 22:37

Wow @Benjispruce4 super update!

Sorry to hear of all the health issues which are yet to be properly supported. Hopefully the NHS will come good.

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 01/11/2022 22:41

Great news @Benjispruce4 I've always thought York looks cracking!

279Nouveauxnoms · 01/11/2022 22:50

Great news @Benjispruce4

Monkey2001 · 01/11/2022 23:43

Great news @Benjispruce4 , so glad that it has come together after the attempt to love Nott Trent failed. Isn't is a lovely feeling having a handful of unconditional offers? We had that for DS1 who was a gap year medic after getting no offers first time round. I assume she will be invited to offer holder days in the spring, and she can attend those knowing that the only uncertainty is which she chooses to take!
