This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

Good god that’s a fabulous room and view! Where is that?

blinkbonny · 23/09/2022 17:17

Successfully dropped off. Some people in halls seemed friendly enough and one lad stopped for a chat and said that a few people had gone out after dinner last night - he said that though it's a bit 'engineered' as they don't known each other at all yet, at least everyone was friendly and happy to chat. So I think the communal dining will be a great way of creating sociability at first, though I do have visions of that awkward American high school movie moment when they're wandering with their tray and not knowing where to sit...

On our way home now and the back of the car feels very empty Sad

Room pic attached. I promise it's Nottingham even though no turquoise curtains!

Apparently not benji...

Quick word on the vacuum bags, DSs clothes were wrinkled to hell when i took them out!

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn how long were they in there for? I’m thinking of vacuuming the bags last thing before we leave

Benjispruce4 · 23/09/2022 17:29

Love these green views. DD has a cream, rendered wall about 2 ft from her window! It’s pathetic fallacy. @Piggywaspushed will correct me if that’s the wrong linguistic device. 😄

icanbewhatiwant · 23/09/2022 17:31

@Benjispruce4 ds's view....

@EspeciallyDivided wow! Love buildings like that, the view might be distracting if trying to work though. DS1 was in lovely old hall and DS2 would go for the old houses if he went to Leicester, so much more character even if less practical!

icanbewhatiwant · 23/09/2022 17:35

@EspeciallyDivided that is a great room.

Star for benji

DS has a view of a car park, albeit a leafy one. Useful for spying run away posties.

The other side of he flats has a nice view of The Vale.

Benjispruce4 · 23/09/2022 17:47

Yay for my gold star!
@icanbewhatiwant its A view, which is better than NO view imo.

Seeline · 23/09/2022 17:53

@PhotoDad tap water with meals is my DD too - she loves going out with friends for drinks but always tap water when we take her out too! Love the independents on the road down towards Parker’s piece in Cambridge.

crazycrofter · 23/09/2022 17:57

@Monkey2001 I was in one of the old houses at Leicester in year 1 and loved it! It was a double room but pretty spacious and right opposite the botanical gardens.

Dd seems to be making some progress... she's packed her clothes.

Fruitygal · 23/09/2022 17:57

We are venturing up north today - drop off tomorrow morning. Left at lunch time and still 90 mins away. DD very teary at saying goodbye to big brother and also bestie since babies but having a pub meal tonight and a good nights sleep will help.

singingstones · 23/09/2022 18:02

Good to hear it went well blink.

Heifer I would like to join you on your 1 Oct plan please. I think Volterra might too (may be remembering that wrongly though)

Me too ! Plans are decluttering and decorating, sorting out my career, getting the weight shifted, dusting off the yoga mat etc etc.

DH moved to near enough permanent lates on his shifts so sometimes evenings are going to be quite lonely.

We had started going to the local pubs that do music when he was off at the weekend - last one we due to go to got cancelled ( Blondie tribute). It turns out that although I was worried about making friends again locally , he knows loads through work - he likes to spend most of his time with the dog though !

I'm loving all the photos ! @Benjispruce4 sorry to hear about DD - I sneak into the SU fairs at work sometimes - you do need a couple of peeps to go with to get the benefit. Hopefully course start will help. Do they provide student mentors DD has been allocated one and meeting up on Tues.

@icanbewhatiwant Isn’t that View going to be a bit, er, noisy???

Never mind the tram, DD has been on the Metro!

ProggyMat · 23/09/2022 18:42

Fabulous ‘home from home’ pictures and love the Notts lads’ vibe!
@KingscoteStaff your DDs room is fabulous - proper ‘Toon’ !
@EspeciallyDivided Wow! What a window and view!

singingstones · 23/09/2022 18:47

DS has bought a panini stickers album for the World Cup, so there goes the maintenance loan 😬

Benjispruce4 · 23/09/2022 18:50

Just spoke to DD. There was a fight outside her room last night at 3 am and a threatened stabbing This is to do with the girl next door studying law!

Benjispruce4 · 23/09/2022 18:51

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee Do you work there?

Cantonet · 23/09/2022 19:02

God @Benjispruce4 your DD seems to have the flat from hell😲

ealingwestmum · 23/09/2022 19:03

omg Benji, it just doesn’t get any better does it? Hoping BF was there at that point…

Heifer · 23/09/2022 19:13

LOL @singingstones I think I saw a headline about it costing approx £900 is you bought all the cards?

Just caught up a bit more and sorry to hear about your DD @Benjispruce4 . Sounds like it's a positive thing that her bf is coming to stay for the weekend. Really hope it improves for her.
