Since living out here in Cyprus this is one thing that has really gripped my sh*t (xcuse language). All the time you see the first stage car seats in the cars facing forward or sideways and no seat belt on them. Today as I was putting my shopping in the cr a younginsh family were getting out of theres they had a Jane car seat (I gather a very good make)the babs was no mote than 2-3 weeks if that tbh.. and was in themiddle of the back seat, no seatbelt round it and facing forward [angrty] . They also had a little boy of about 3-4yrs with them , no car/ booster seat and no seat belt.

This really gets to me buit not a lot I can do about just needed to rant.

((( Latest News : Consultation on Compulsory Seat Belt/Child Restraint Wearing
June 2005

The law on using child restraints in cars is going to change. By May 2006, the law will require children travelling in cars to use child restraints.

The Department for Transport issued its long awaited consultation about child car seat use on the 13th June 2005. The consultation discusses how European Directive 2003/20/EC is implemented.

The Consultation Paper Child Seats consultation paper is available on the DfT website.

The key proposals are that:

All children under 3 years old must use an appropriate child restraint when travelling in a car or goods vehicle (except in a taxi if a child seat is not available);
Children aged 3 or more years old and up to 135 cms (approx 4 ft 5 inches) in height must use an appropriate child restraint when travelling in cars or goods vehicles fitted with seat belts (few exceptions are permitted);
Rear-facing baby seats must not be used in seats with active frontal air-bag;
All child restraints must conform to modern safety standards, meaning UN-ECE Regulation 44.03 (to apply from May 2008); and
Where seat belts are provided, the number of people carried in the rear of vehicles may not exceed the number of seats available fitted with seat belts or child restraints (to apply from May 2009).
It is hoped that new legislation will prevent around 2000 child deaths and injuries per year, the consultation closes on the 5th of September.

Hope it does become law and is enforced. Sadly I can't see all parents of children already out of seats changing their habits though.

Must admit I took my DD out of her booster when she was 6. She stayed in the second stage care seat until she was 3.5years. For ther emainder 6 months she was in the big car seat for long journies.

I will though however keep DS on his (when he gets to that stage) if this is what the law will require.

It is appaling really that it has taken this long for the laws to be passed, and the fact we still have to wait for it to be enforced. Hopeflly people will take notice but unfortunatley I think those people dont don't restrain there children in the car properly now, wont do it regardless of the law.
