Since living out here in Cyprus this is one thing that has really gripped my sh*t (xcuse language). All the time you see the first stage car seats in the cars facing forward or sideways and no seat belt on them. Today as I was putting my shopping in the cr a younginsh family were getting out of theres they had a Jane car seat (I gather a very good make)the babs was no mote than 2-3 weeks if that tbh.. and was in themiddle of the back seat, no seatbelt round it and facing forward [angrty] . They also had a little boy of about 3-4yrs with them , no car/ booster seat and no seat belt.

This really gets to me buit not a lot I can do about just needed to rant.

it really annoys me too.
but, and i can hardly argue with dad, he had four kids, and no car seats. and we're still alive.
though he happily insists on my kids being strapped in properly so no moans there.

monkeytrousers · 18/08/2005 09:35

I can't understand it. I worry even with him in a secured one. But I'm a worrier, I think

Don't see the point of paying all that money for one and then not taking the trouble to use it properly. Talk about a false sense of security.

moondog · 18/08/2005 09:39

Stitch...but in the olden days, cars drove at about 10 miles an hour and there weren't many of them lol!

Luckylady, couldn't agree more. Here in Turkey it's just the same. Insane driving and people sitting in the front while babies stand on their laps with their faces pressed to the windscreen.
Saw a horrendous accident recently, where a bloke shot a red light, straight into the back of a vehicle waiting at the next set. Noseatbelt so his head smashed straight into the windscreen and smashed it. Blood everywhere. Amazed that he was still alive tbh.

luckylady · 18/08/2005 09:48

moondog- I think the driving habits etc, must be the same in turkey as here, they have NO road sense at all and no concern for the saftey of those in the car be it children or adults..
It is funny really when you think that they are a children loving society on the whole but yet the disreguarf basic safety measures...

Yes,ll. Can't understand it. Turks adore children. Wherever we go,the baby is taken from my arms and passed around, whether it's old ladies, kids, young blokes, anyone.

luckylady · 18/08/2005 10:10

I still get that with ds, he loves the attention though, myy dd gets a bit jealous sometimes about the attention he gets!!

same in South Africa

makes my blood boil as SA has the one of the highest incidence of death because of car accidents in the world.

dejags · 18/08/2005 10:28

even worse our family refuse to take it seriously and I found out last week that DS1 (4yrs old) was allowed to sit on his cousins lap on the FRONT seat whilst out and about in the car.

moondog · 18/08/2005 10:28

Oh yes!
When we just had dd she was flavour of the month. Now we have ds (blonde and blue eyed to boot) she barely gets a look in!

stitch · 18/08/2005 10:30

dejags, you mean its not ok to breastfeed and drive at the same time?

moondog · 18/08/2005 10:36

I've breastfed a desperate baby in a carseat. Dangled my boob in her face by crouching over her.
I wasn't driving though!

frogs · 18/08/2005 10:38

Is it more a non-UK thing, do you think? Our Iranian neighbours put the baby in an unsecured baby carrier (forward facing) just as you describe.

I was wondering if the public education thing in the UK had been successful to the extent that this sort of crapness had been minimised here in the UK-born population. Or do you think it's just as widespread in UK as elsewhere? Pretty scary, if so -- I mean the baby carriers now have gurt big instructions printed on the seats. And they're all in pictures, too. How hard can it be?

stitch · 18/08/2005 10:38

wow,
ive always had to stop at the side of the road, and just sit there and feed. not easy when the other two are moaning that they want to go out for a wander, and you are in the middle of nowhere.
since my breastfeeding days are over, i thankfully wont have to practice that position,

stitch · 18/08/2005 10:40

i think its a culture thing.
i gave my sil a car seat, she never used it. i think she thought it was safer to leave the baby at home with her 12 year old, or drive with the baby in someones lap.
who knows...

moondog · 18/08/2005 10:46

Where is sil from stitch?
I've been in many countries and always horrified by their gung-ho attitude to safety. Russian playgrounds are full of old broken toys, often leaving dangerous metal spikes exposed. Maybe we're too cautious? Who knows?

luckylady · 18/08/2005 10:47

i think it is down to culture and education on these matters. But I find that htey do't take any sort of advice instructions... I know here they have the attitude that they know best end of!!

Moondog - how come you move around to all these different countries?? (I am just being nosey now) I live in Cyprus as DH is military.

moondog · 18/08/2005 10:49

ll, dh is a consultant so works all over. (Childhood spent abroad too so used to it.)
Is Cyprus nice? Do they look after the women accompanying the blokes?

hercules · 18/08/2005 10:50

My cousin in law (from Srilanka) and her dh left our house after a party with their then 9 months old and she put him on her lap with the belt around them both. We offered our car seat to them and they declined and said they actually owned 2 car seats but he didnt like going in them!
I said I bet he wouldnt like going through the windscreen either......

moondog · 18/08/2005 10:52

In the UK,Hercules? Did you point out it is illegal?
Btw,did you read the story in the paper recently where the woman who had secured her kid wrongly in a carseat and ended up killing him in a carcrash was done for manslaughter??

luckylady · 18/08/2005 10:52

well said hercules.

Moondog- yeas they do , we have a nice house etc. There are things going on but I don't do the wives clubs etc as a bit to cliquey for me.

OP posts:
hercules · 18/08/2005 10:53

In the Uk, yes. DH and I pointed it all out but they were happy with their decision.
