Always the highest you can buy.
50+
Mine is a red haired, pale 1 yr old and I can recommend SunSense Toddler Milk 60+ for kids with ezcema.
Amazon sell it.

Agree with sooty. 30 is fine. 50 not available in aus and it gets a million times hotter.

LostArtofKeepingASecret · 22/05/2010 19:47

For what is worth, I think Sooty is right. I used to smoother my two in factor 50+, all it did was cover them in a greasy goo. I've switch to factor 25, it's just as efficient and better for their skin.

Ok Thanks I was hoping to use the 30 and just the 50 for swimming and other high exposures .

MOst important thing is to use plenty and to reapply often.
Sometimes people think because it is a high factor, they need not reapply so frequently nor so liberally, but you need to slather it on.
We normally use 25 or 30 and reappply once an hour or after getting wet.

Nice scaremongering there Sooty. By all means look into 'natural' sunscreen, but do not put people off using any because they are 'carcinogenic' - the bloody lack of protection from the sunshine is the carcinogenic factor fgs!

I always re-apply the dc regularly and after water even with waterproof ones not so fussy with mine though and quite frequently get burnt .

So do I need factor 50 for the baby 9months for when I run out or is factor 30 better.

Sooty - I have no faith whatsoever in articles easily obtainable via the internet. They are not verifiable on their own. Have you never read any of Ben Goldacre's stuff? He spout a lot of tripe at times, but he makes very valid arguments wrt the mis-use of scientific research.
I have used Weleda, etc products for years mainly based on the non-animal testing basis and I am not at all suspicious of them. I am suspicious of many scientific articles cited in isolation or cherry-picked to support a specific viewpoint.
ANd wrt 'chemical' - just because something is a natural chemical doesn't stop it being harmless. If you want to believe/accept that so-called natural stuff has medicinal effec, then you must also accept that it may have side effects and needs to be treated with as much respect as man-made stuff.

nickytwotimes · 22/05/2010 20:12

And for heaven's sake EVERYTHING IS MADE OF CHEMICALS.

Sooty, I'd need to care enough to read them within context and knowing the background. We live longer and healthier lives than our ancestors so something must be going okay. I can't be bothered investigating worried-well stuff.

look, we are hijacking the op's thread (sorry!) and we are not going to agree on this. Use whatever you like. Chances are we are using the same stuff by the sounds of it. So long as you slather your kids in decent enough suncream and use common sense, they will be fine.

Again, sorry OP.

slushy06 · 22/05/2010 20:43

No probs hi jack away I have my answer I will use the factor 30 and when I buy some more will probably use the green ones but for now factor 30 soltan. Thanks ladies.

Sunsense is an Australian brand! It even has a picture of Australia on the bottle.

What do you mean you can't buy factor 50 in Australia, that is where I get my factor 60 from, the UK stuff is so greasy and slimy on my skin.

www.sunsense.co.uk/content/school_eduacation.aspx

My son would burn on 5 minutes if I put him in the sun, by putting factor 60 on him, I can try and chase him into the shade for 5 hours, when he crawls out into the sun. If I used factor 30, I would only get to play outside trying to keep him under the shade of trees for 3-hours.
Sunsense isnt greasy and has been excellent on my sons ezcema. Don't know about natural ones, never tried them as the factor has never been high enough for my ghostly pale skin and re-headedness.

Hulababy · 23/05/2010 20:21

My Dd reacts to many suncreams so we use the ones that she doesn't react too - currently P20 once a day or the once a day UltraSun - also about facvtor 20.

We have used both successful with no burning for DD for a few summers, including heiht of US summertime heat, and also for myself (I burn quickly).

expatinscotland · 23/05/2010 20:27

I use some expensive ass stuff from Switzerland, Ultasun or Ultrasun or summat like that from John Lewis as it's the only thing that doesn't cause DD1 to get a rash and she's pale as milk.

So I put it on all three of them.

Takes ages to rub in, though.

lovechoc · 23/05/2010 20:33

factor 50 always for DS and myself. and I use soltan. and I don't give a toss about the chemicals in it, I use it to protect us from the sun.

expatinscotland · 23/05/2010 20:35

snap, hulababy!

no burns here yet, for all three of them.
