What baby essential would you spend £60 on?

I have a two week old baby boy - our first DC - and we have been given £60 from my work with which I want to buy something worthwhile - could be something practical, fun, educational, whatever.

For inspiration, I'd really like to see if anyone can recommend something that, looking back, they found indispensable for their newborn that I could buy for about this sum - could be absolutely anything...

Any ideas? TIA

playmat - will last for ages

Lastyearsmodel · 29/04/2010 17:50

A really good sling. The Beco goes from newborn to 45lb and does back carries too. I love mine.

You could put it towards a Tripp Trapp (or other good quality long lasting wooden high chair - maybe one of those ones that separates into a little table and chair set).

agree about playmat - M&P have some lovely ones.

Grobags?

brilliant things.

GetThePartyStarted · 29/04/2010 18:11

I recently boughtthis which is fantastic. DS is entranced by the lights and has gone from looking at the dangling toys, to hitting them to grabbing them.

Definitely recommend, music is getting a bit annoying though! Worth it for the chance to mnet eat my lunch

wrap sling

IMoveTheStars · 29/04/2010 18:14

Argh, this thread is making me broody! I miss cuddling DS in his grobags

Ahh.. the Tiny Love gyms are brilliant - toys are low down enough that teeny babies can reach them (loads of really high up)

A case of Sauvignon Blanc.

Or, failing that, something like this. I know it's too expensive, but I had something similar that was much cheaper and it was wonderful. It inflated really quickly and easily and meant you could have a safe comfortable place to put the baby down anywhere you went.

kitkatsforbreakfast · 29/04/2010 18:22

I would go for something like a wheely bug, or wooden trike.

Or a really nice big wooden toy chest. You can get them with the child's name painted on it.

Or a child sized table and chair for painting and drawing when he's older.

Also like the idea of a Tripp Trapp chair. Ours has done 3 children and is soon to be cleaned down and put into the loft for future grandchildren (thinking ahead - dc are 8, 6 and 4)

I suppose my ideas are less baby oriented, more child oriented, but I think you'll get more use out of them, they will last for longer and can be used for second and subsequent children.

What about some of those baby books with your photos by snapfish - get some lovely lasting images of your DC? I've just done some of my DD and I'm so pleased with them. I can gaze at them when I return to work next week

DilysPrice · 29/04/2010 21:08

Seconded on the grobags actually - a godsend for wriggly little babies who otherwise get their legs stuck between cot slats, and means you don't have to get paranoid about them getting buried under the blankets.

PrincessBoo · 29/04/2010 22:08

Another vote for a sling here - something like an Ergo would be fab.

accessorizequeen · 29/04/2010 22:09

tiny love mobile, godsend. Worth 100's.

cece · 29/04/2010 22:10

Grobag - wonderful things. You need at least two.

Tocca · 29/04/2010 22:11

I would save it for now and put it towards a tripp trapp. You will use it long past baby stage.

Or a baby sheepskin. Mine lay on them when tiny and now have them under their sheets and in their wigwam etc.

Habbibu · 29/04/2010 22:11

Wrap sling. Oh Lord yes. Wish I'd had one with dd.

Tocca · 29/04/2010 22:12

Oh and congratulations on your tiny baby! How nice...

usualsuspect · 29/04/2010 22:13

Smirnoff ,6 bottles

Trafficcone · 29/04/2010 22:13

Another vote for a sling. I can't bear gro-bags and wouldn't put mine to bed without their arms and shoulders covered. Makes me shiver just thinking about it.

littledawley · 29/04/2010 22:15

Another vote for a TripTrap - DS is nearly 6 and still sits on his for every meal.

Tocca · 29/04/2010 22:16

(Or you could put it towards a few friday night take-aways you know... that's a baby essential - or some of that food they deliver from COOK)

nikki1978 · 29/04/2010 22:16

Babysitter

LovelyDear · 29/04/2010 22:17

If i had one now (instead of ten years ago ) I would be wanting one of these, the Fisher-Price Jumperoo.
