What baby essential would you spend £60 on?

I have a two week old baby boy - our first DC - and we have been given £60 from my work with which I want to buy something worthwhile - could be something practical, fun, educational, whatever.

For inspiration, I'd really like to see if anyone can recommend something that, looking back, they found indispensable for their newborn that I could buy for about this sum - could be absolutely anything...

Any ideas? TIA

The Ikea high chair is great, we had one for the garden, but not the same as Tripp Trapp (only in that it doesnt usually come with a tray, so can go right next to table) - I believe that there are sim high chairs that turn into chairs out there, not sure (BabyDan maybe?) but don't want you to go roaming around Ikea looking for a mythical beast...

Cloth nappies.

Saved us literally hundreds of pounds, most of which we spent on beer.

YoMoJo · 01/05/2010 20:29

yes Dizzeee that is the one I meant, they also do a tray for about £4 to go with it.

fisher price baby swing.

bought ours when dd3 was 4 weeks old.

still loves it now- she is 2 years 5 months.

it was a christmas present- i would never even have thought about buying it for her- it was the best £60 my mum ever spent!

SheWillBeLoved · 01/05/2010 21:51

A good sling, I have just got my first sling (ring sling) and DD is 9 months - I'm now wondering how I ever lived without it so much easier not lugging that bloody pram everywhere!

VictoriaC · 01/05/2010 21:58

I agree with GetThePartyStarted, my DS is 18 months now but loved his. Or a Fisher Price Cruise and Crawl.

nappyaddict · 02/05/2010 13:29

I like this play gym and it is a good price so you could get something else as well.

This is also very nice but more expensive.

ToffeeAddict · 02/05/2010 15:56

Ah right thanks for the clarification Dizzeee and YoMoJo - I'd originally misread YoMoJo's post and taken it to mean that the Ikea chair was like the TT one.

A decent sling or a swing seat. Definitely getting one next time as couldn't put DD down.

Just had a flash of inspiration - when DS was tiny he seemed to have a radar for when a program was starting - We'd forever be watching the first and last 3 mins of CSI whatever.

So, if you are TV people, and unless you have freeview+ or sky+, invest in that. will be the best money you spend.

3 boxes of nice red wine.

failing that a mattress for cot.

Vtech First Steps Walker - 10/10

www.toysrus.co.uk/Babies-R-Us/Toys/Learning-Toys/VTech-Baby-First-Steps-Walker(0026669)

This has had more use than anything else we bought / were given. My 3yo learned to walk with it (voluntarily!) and he still plays with it as the play pad detaches and my 4mo is starting to show interest. Its lasted better and longer than anything else.

ICouldHaveWrittenThis · 02/05/2010 23:53

agree with the vTech walker, it's excellent. I've just given one away, otherwise I would have offered it to you.

Try ebay - EVERYONE has one, and they last for years, so you'll get one for peanuts.

nappyaddict · 03/05/2010 02:02

Are you breastfeeding? If so the widgey breastfeeding cushion is a great buy. It doubles as a breast feeding cushion and also for helping them learn to sit up later on.

nappyaddict · 03/05/2010 02:03

Meant to say they are much better than the inflatable rings. As soon as their legs are long enough so their feet touch the side they end up flipping out of them.

Snooks14 · 03/05/2010 02:24

The fact that you are posting this makes me think that you want to do something special with this dosh. You want to remember and mark who gave you this. Maybe get a really nice picture frame and then what the hell I agree with Seeker - wine for the rest!!!!!!

piprabbit · 03/05/2010 02:38

Do you have a small, speedy digital camera that you can carry with you at all times? So you can take some really good pictures (not just phone ones).

Or put the money aside, split it into 2 or 3 chunks and then spend it at Photobox on the baby's first, second and third birthdays by making one of their photobooks?

Or spend it on the baby's first pair of Clarks walking shoes. You'll probably keep that pair forever .

thumbwitch · 03/05/2010 04:05

the only thing I spent big money on was a natural mattress - cost £99 but for me it was well worth it. Was lucky in that most other things were given to me/found really cheaply on ebay or friends of friends. So I didn't mind splashing out on this one, imo, really important item.

TheBossofMe · 03/05/2010 05:02

toffee - i think its a babydan highchair that is like the TT. DD is 2 and still using hers a chair, so I can vouch for their usefulness over a normal highchair. However, they aren't great when first weaning - a highchair which angles back slightly (I think Mama's and Papa's do a good one) is a bit better. Or just do BLW since it negates that particular problem!
