That Alder Hey programme last night- smoking outside, just as bad as inside

DH is a fairly heavy smoker- at least 20 Embassy a day, but he smokes outside, so thats ok

I was so glad that he watched that programme with me last night, as to see the nurse saying that the effects of passive smoking are as bad whether they smoke inside or out might finally hit home with him.

I have told him that if he doesn't stop, he will be as bad as that horrible scrote, who won't stop because he didn't believe the Doctors/government or whatever shite it was he was spouting.

themildmanneredjanitor that's what disturbed me the most - a mug of ketchup a day! Just don't give her any. DS has a 10p piece worth on his plate and that has to last and that's it he can whinge as much as he likes!

I didn't see this but will try to watch it from your link later.

I'm not sure what to think about it without seeing it but this discussion brought to mind an experience I had at work.

I don't smoke but my boss did. One day he used my telephone extention for less than one minute and I had to answer it almost immediately he put it down.

I inhaled a mouthful of something, it smelled and tasted like cigarette smoke and I could taste if for ages.

He never smoked inside and it had been about half an hour since his last cigarette.

So although I don't think it's exactly the same I still think it must be pretty bad and still harmful if you smoke outside and then come inside and have contact with children. Just not sure if it's to the same extent as smoking in the house with them.

I will try to watch the link though, thanks.

Surely anyone who has kids should think about their childrens health and not smoke anywhere maybe this is idealistic but saying outside it better than inside is beside the point that neither is good.

I agree with themildmanneredjanitor 10stone at 5 WTF and the mum who let her 3 year old have 5 lollys a day as he liked them.
Thats not parenting thats letting them do as they like then letting the good old NHS use its vital resources on preventable treatments.

Im not sure if this programme made me mad or sad. Esp when they spoke to the parents after the operations and they hadnt changed as they said they would.
The sad thing is that these kids will have kids and repeat the same mistakes.

I watched it too and was horrified by the ignorance of so many parents. The smoking thing was a shocker-maybe outside is not as bad as inside but if it affects children's health at all any responsible parent would stop.

I'm going to collate the info on this thread as have a dh who smokes outside. He did stop and started again recently and its made me really angry. More power to my elbow

i agree with fandango, obviously there will be some smoke left on your clothes but the damage is knowhere near as great as if you smoke inside! also the nurse on panarama was specifically talking about glue ear not asthma, chest infections etc...
that 10 stone 5yo was ridiculous (actually his mum was) would you not realise there was a problem a bit earlier on and try and do something about it???!!!
