no-one seems to listen or care that my son has been ill for a week. vomiting, runs, no wet nappies, dry mouth sooo tired-still asleep now since 8pm.took him the walk in centre on sunday-they sent me to alder hey, where i waited for 6hours the was sent home saying he was alert and obs were fine.told to go back if he didnt have a wet nappy by 8pm that night.so we took him back having giving him dioralyte every 5mins.waited another 6hrs to be told he was again alert so go home and give him dioralyte.he wont keep the stuff down anymore and milk makes him worse and im at the end of my tether seeing him so stressed and hungry.took him back last night.nurse said try him with some dioralyte!!!aargh!!!she gave me a leaflet on gastroenteritis and told us we could go home.we were welcome 2stay and wait 4yet another 6hrs but the doc will tell u the same.so home we came.i know im ranting but im so worried bout him.my family r far away and keep telling me he needs 2 be on a drip-which i know but the doc's/nurses arent bothered??
any advice would be appreciated here as im going out of my mind.

That's awful... can you insist on staying at the hospital until you see someone more senior... the consultant in charge for example. Doesn't sound right to just leave a baby in that state with just dioralyte.

belgo · 25/03/2010 10:35

Lack of wet nappies and a dry mouth are signs of dehydration. If he still has these and you cannot get him to drink diolorite or milk and he isn't keeping it down then take him back to the hospital.

How old is your ds? How does his fontanelle feel like? Is it sunken?

baby1onway · 25/03/2010 10:38

im quite a shy person and did try and insist yday but the nurse was a lot firmer than me and made me feel like a "typical first time mum" if you know what i mean.i just dont know what to do.

Yes, I would take him back to A+E .

Don't be shy, nothing is more important than your babies well being. And even if you are being a "typical first time mother" they are there to reassure you, and you are not reassured. No one knows your baby better than you, and if you feel he's not well, then he's not well, and don't take no for an answer. They're only seeing him for a brief amount of time.

HeadFairy · 25/03/2010 10:41

A sunken fontanelle is another sign of dehydration (that's if it's more sunken than usual of course, they're often a little bit sunken)

ChickensHaveSinisterMotives · 25/03/2010 10:41

A+E, and steel yourself for patronising eye rolling. You know your baby best. Insist on him being admitted x

posieparker · 25/03/2010 10:42

No wet nappies, get in to A&E.

Dumbledoresgirl · 25/03/2010 10:42

Try and see if your HV or GP will see you today? They may have more time to spend with you, and if things are bad enough for the hospital, they will be able to refer you.

I would be worried simply that he had been sleeping for 14 hours. How old is he?

HeadFairy · 25/03/2010 10:42

sorry baby's

Dumbledoresgirl · 25/03/2010 10:43

OMG crossed posts. Definitely put your foot down and insist he is seen. The GP/HV might still be an easier route in to hospital thatn A&E (especially if they make you wait 6 hours) but, whichever way, get him seen.

BridesheadRegardless · 25/03/2010 10:45

Go back, make a scene, cry, wail 'no one is taking me seriously'.

Tell them 'my baby is ill, I know he is ill I need to see the doctor urgently, I am not taking him home again until this is taken seriously.'

I know you're shy but you can do this you need to do it.

You are a typical first time mum, you are a typical mum, you are typically frightened that your baby is ill, that he has been for a week and that no one is listening.

I would feel like this too.

ShinyAndNew · 25/03/2010 10:47

wrt to diaorlyte, if he won't drink it (dd2 wouldn't) I was told by NHS Direct that isotonic sports drinks do the same thing but are much nicer to taste.

Dd2 had similar symptoms but wasn't as dhydrated as your son. Sher was in eth end diagnosed with swine flu, but it took days to get someone to come and see her. Had she not been weeing though I would have demnded that someone come and look at her.

I think that is your only option here. Take him back to the walk-in center or A and E and say that you are nto going anywhere untill he is properly assesed and outline youir concerns again. Particularly mention the dry nappies, dry mouth, sunken fontanelle, drowsiness etc. If he is brighter whiuke he is there make sure you sress that this is a good patch and not how he has been at home as he is up and down.

LoveBeingAMummy · 25/03/2010 10:47

I agree re the gp, give them a call now and explain you need to see the gp urgently.

belgo · 25/03/2010 10:48

No wet nappies for two days is a medical emergency and you HAVE to go back and insist he is seen immediately - say he has had no wet nappies for two days.

LadyBiscuit · 25/03/2010 10:48

Take all the nappies from the last two days down there and show them that's all he's produced. You need to be tough and just insist that you are not leaving until he's seen by a consultant

meep · 25/03/2010 10:50

tell them to test his blood sugar as well.

They do tend to do the fluid test of dioralyte every 5 mins. However that was all dd2 had for a week and her blood sugar was dangerously low - she ended up on a drip and glucose overnight.

I was at A&E around 4 times over the weeks that followed and they were always happy to help and check her over (lots of fluid tests - but they took it seriously beacuse she had nothing but dioralyte for 3 weeks and got very thin)

Luckily I have a very good local children's hospital close by and they positively encouraged me to bring her back if I was worried.

FWIW dd2 would perk up when she was in there because it was interesting - though the day she was admitted she did just lie there and not do much.

Little ones can go downhill so quickly - so I woudl take him back to A&E and tell them he has had no wet nappies and sleeps more than usual etc.

winnybella · 25/03/2010 10:50

A&E. Two days no wet nappies???
It should be enough if you mention that.
Go now.

LoveBeingAMummy · 25/03/2010 10:51

Actually NHS Direct would book you straigth inot hospital i think?

MumGoneCrazy · 25/03/2010 10:52

Go to your GP

In january DD3 then 4months had a sunken in soft spot, wasn't keeping anything down, had no wet nappies and was sleepy and non responsive, I phoned the gp who sent an ambulance out as he said it sounded like dehydration, we was kept in for 24hrs and nearly had to go on a drip but luckily she finally started taking dioralyte after we'd been there for a few hours

starynight · 25/03/2010 10:57

Oh no sorry to hear your little ones like this my dd had it at Xmas and doctors didn't help me either just did the same as you and it lasted 2weeks solid its awful.

All though my dd would take tiny bits of water she did not have a dry mouth or feel really sleepy wich is worrying. Really winds me up when they tell you signs to watch for and to bring em in straight away yet when you do they send you home and treat you like your daft

Sorry not got much advice except for what you already know ie plenty liquids wich is hard when they just won't take it but hope your baby starts to feel better soon and keep on at them docs.
