no-one seems to listen or care that my son has been ill for a week. vomiting, runs, no wet nappies, dry mouth sooo tired-still asleep now since 8pm.took him the walk in centre on sunday-they sent me to alder hey, where i waited for 6hours the was sent home saying he was alert and obs were fine.told to go back if he didnt have a wet nappy by 8pm that night.so we took him back having giving him dioralyte every 5mins.waited another 6hrs to be told he was again alert so go home and give him dioralyte.he wont keep the stuff down anymore and milk makes him worse and im at the end of my tether seeing him so stressed and hungry.took him back last night.nurse said try him with some dioralyte!!!aargh!!!she gave me a leaflet on gastroenteritis and told us we could go home.we were welcome 2stay and wait 4yet another 6hrs but the doc will tell u the same.so home we came.i know im ranting but im so worried bout him.my family r far away and keep telling me he needs 2 be on a drip-which i know but the doc's/nurses arent bothered??

I can relate to what you are feeling now I had DD with a raging temp, convulsions and sickness and got told to give calpol for over 5 days. I was practically hysterical with no sleep and worry and no one would listen. Finally got to see a Paed who dx acute tonsilitis and hospital admission for a week as she couldn't swallow AB orally she was in so much pain.

Get back there and be pushy, no wet nappies, sunken fontalette and sleepy baby are signs of dehydration. Your baby is v young, they need to take it seriously.

starynight · 25/03/2010 11:05

Please don't be shy dehydration can get to a bad stage very quick. Fuzzy brain this morning and didn't realise no wet nappies for 2days get him to a+e and act like a mad woman if need be

as others have said, keep going back and insist on seeing a paediatrician or a different doc until you get someone to take you seriously.

On a completely different note, nothing remotely similar in actual condition, my sis's DD was ill from November until January, docs kept saying she had variously tonsilitis, teething issues, ear infections (non-painful ones ) and she just had to keep going back and back and ended up going to a Paediatric A&E in London who finally worked out what was wrong. She was fine after the op she needed.

Do you have a partner who can go with you? Or someone who is more pushy than you feel able to be?

ronshar · 25/03/2010 11:13

Go to your GP surgery and insit on seeing your GP. He will refer you straight to the
childrens ward and so you will bypass A+E.

Do ring just turn up and tell them your DS has been asleep for nearly 15 hours and hasnt had a wet nappy since Tuesday.

That will be enough to get an appointment with the doctor right there and then.

DONT take NO for an answer!

IMoveTheStars · 25/03/2010 11:20

I agree that the GP is the best option if A&E are ignoring you. they'll see you straightaway. (If they don't then refuse to move until you are seen)

whifflegarden · 25/03/2010 11:22

you poor thing
trust your instincts. have you got hold of your gp? you have to be firm for your baby, don't worry what they think of you. you can do it. apologies re. punctuation, one handed.

IMoveTheStars · 25/03/2010 14:02

baby1onway - did you get seen in the end? Hoping that your absense on the thread means you're in the hospital and they're taking you seriously now

Katyathegringa · 25/03/2010 14:49

Get back there right now, it could be something completely innocuous or it could be something more sinister ? and neither you nor they will know which until they have investigated. And, as a mother, you know your child, they don?t ? what they believe to be normal could easily be abnormal for your LO.

I used to be a pediatric nurse, and although some staff may do the eye rolling, "first time mother eh" thing - they do have to take your concerns seriously. And if thy have more than 2 brain cells to rub together will realise that it is more than their job's worth to not do so, considering this day and age of law suits and formal investigations.

becaroo · 25/03/2010 14:56

Ring for an ambulance now.

baby1onway · 25/03/2010 17:06

Thats great news

ronshar · 26/03/2010 11:32

Thats brilliant. Keep pushing the fluids and I'm sure that your baby will be just fine.

tostaky · 27/03/2010 11:51

Also, if it is gastroenteritis - it may be best to avoid giving him cow milk... I give mine rice milk instead for a few days (can be found near the long-life milk in supermarket).

I know how frustrating it is not being listened to by doctors....!

outnumbered2to1 · 27/03/2010 13:04

if he has had no wet nappies for two days, is not keeping anything down and is floppy and unresponisve and the hospital won't do anthing phone a blooming ambulance. they have to take you serioiusly then
