How often do you bath your DCs and wash their hair?

I bath them almost every night, with the exception of saturday night (don't know why - just mine and DH's way of seeming like we are having a night off from the grind I guess!), and occasionally we don't bother if we are back late, have visitors, or if DD is beyond tired. We wash DD and DS's hair once a week - mainly because it is such a debacle with DDs long locks and feisty temperament!!!

I know some people who are religious about bathing the DCs every night without fail, and others who are a bit more chilled out. However I can't help feeling a bit bad when I decide not to bother for a night!!!!

DS has a bath every other day and will wash his hair too.

I shower 1-2 twice a day and wash my hair every 2 days or so. I do not feel human unless I have my shower in the mornings. There is no way on this earth that I would venture outside without having my shower.

I think, again it all depends on what one is used to. DP only showers every other day and he commutes on the train .... euch!

LittleSilver · 19/03/2010 21:57

Ooh, I am glad am not the only one! DDs (10mo, 2 and 4) have a bath about 3 times a week, hairwash once a week. (Baby might only bath 1-2 week). They all have eczema, so really don't want to aggravate it.

LittleSilver · 19/03/2010 22:01

Oh, and I shower every am (feel very grubby if I don't!), wash hair 3 times a week and have a bathmaybe 2-3 times a week, more to relax than anythign else though.

Once a week.

Why would you do it more? they don't sweat much as kids - it can't be good for young sensitive skin

Relieved to not be the only ones whose DC shower/bath twice a week.
I do think DS1 12 should have at least one more shower a week but he doesn't care yet.

kittywise · 19/03/2010 22:16

twice a week ish..... sometimes I wait until they look grubby

ninja · 19/03/2010 22:22

Why do you all wash hair so often - dd2 (18 months) has had her hair washed never or once, dd2 (6) has it done evry few weeks (normally for special occasions). It's far better for tehm

Baths - dd2 most nights, dd1 2 or 3 times a week

MrsDinky · 19/03/2010 22:35

I'm another who bathes DCs (4 and 6) once or twice a week and hairwash maybe once every 10 days. DD gets a sweaty head when she is hot, and builds up cradle cap, so her hair does get a bit yucky, tend to just do both their hair at the same time as they share a bath. Although DS probably doesn't need it. Use a flannel for any smelly/grubby bits in between, but most days only face and hands. I shower every morning and have a bath about twice a year.

PavlovtheCat · 19/03/2010 22:39

DD aged 3.8 about 2-3 times a week, either a bath or shower with us, mainly as she is a grubby grubster! don't use soap/shower gel often though, perhaps once a week or as and when needed. Wash her hair once every 10 days or so, or as and when needed.

DS, aged 16 weeks, erm, erm, once a week? No products whatsoever, unless he shares a bath with DD and then a bit of baby bubbles. No hair washing, just a rub down with a sponge.

JaynieB · 19/03/2010 22:45

DD age 3 had a bath every other night and hairwash maybe every 3 weeks (waits for the horror backlash) - she hates it being washed and it looks and smells fine, so I wash it when it starts looking a bit straight (its v curly) which is usually a sign it needs doing.
DP hates sensation of water on his face/neck so finds showering not that pleasant and DD has similar reaction to water.
Stepkids used to be terrible soap dodgers - 1 bath a week was a miracle, but are now hormonal teens and shower daily!
I'm an every other day-er too as it takes an age to dry my hair and I won't shower/bath without washing it.

NoahAndTheWhale · 19/03/2010 22:48

I don't keep track. DD had a bath today and yesterday but probably hadn't had one for a while before that. Hair washing happens less often than baths. They look all right to me anyway .

Lovesdogsandcats · 19/03/2010 22:52

Really shocked at those who only wash hair once a week! Is the hair not smelly and yuck by then!!

fabhead · 19/03/2010 22:54

bath and hair every night, apart from the odd night like tonight when got back late and couldn't be bothered - will change their sheets tomorow though.

JaynieB · 19/03/2010 22:55

Nope, DD actually has lovely smelling hair - even when not washed!

MrsDinky · 19/03/2010 23:00

Hair not smelly and yuck after a week, certainly at this time of year. Do wash more in summer to get rid of suncream/sweat however. It has never even occurred to me that people might wash young children's hair every day to be honest.

smilehomebirth · 20/03/2010 11:23

Children don't have the same oil production in their hair that adults have, do they... If their hair looks and smells fine, then it's totally unnecessary to wash it - I give a round of applause for those of you who don't . Same goes for clothes.

A friend of a friend has never washed his hair. Apparently it is fine, soft and silky, and doesn't smell objectionable at all. Wish I could do that with mine...

Did I not see in the New Scientist some study where they found that people have a very fine top layer of skin that acts as an allergen barrier. They found it was very easy to get rid of this barrier, just put a bit of masking tape on your skin and take it off, that was enough to remove it. Too much washing could have the same result.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/03/2010 11:29

Why are we getting judgy?

To those who ask why would you wash hair more than once a week isn't it bad for them - I have a toddler. She smears food into her hair. I wash it out because hair oil is one thing, three-day-old-egg-yolk is another. It's not bad for her. If I was washing her too often I'd notice. FFS.

To those who ask about smelly and yuck - come on, do you not think that mothers are going to notice if their kids are smelly and yuck?

Bloody hell. Something so simple and suddenly people are all 'ew why do you do it that way?'.

NoBingoWings · 20/03/2010 11:46

Mine are now teens and shower daily and then there is much grooming /styling of hair /getting fringe right!!

When they were little they had a bath every night-hair washed every night as both had v curly hair it was conditioned and combed out otherwise it was impossible to stop it tangling at the back.

It was part of their bedtime routine and I think relaxing -both loved their bath- then DP would dry their hair -"Here comes the north wind" and then snuggle up and stories

DP would fall asleep on their beds quite often and they would creep downstairs and tell me
I shower in the morning and hot bath at night -cant sleep otherwise !

OTTMummA · 20/03/2010 13:27

aww, thats a lovely story NoBingoWings, i think some people forget the closeness sharing bath/shower time can bring

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 20/03/2010 13:37

DSs get washed as and when really - sometimes 3 times a day , sometimes not for a few days if they don't need it. On average they are bathed most days and hair washed nearly every day for DS2 and every few days to a week for DS1.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 20/03/2010 13:42

twice a week. Hair wash both times. More only if he's very grubby.
Face and hand wash every night and his bum gets cleaned well at every nappy change.

Flame · 20/03/2010 13:44

6, 4, 5months... randomly when we can be arsed.

hairyclaireyfairy · 20/03/2010 23:01

Once a week bath and hairwash for my two 8+6
Hands, face , bottoms daily.
When they were younger a daily bath was part of the routine, too many things going on now after school to do this every night.
Their hair could probably go for even longer without washing.
More baths in the summer if they want.
And they look clean and don't smell !
