just curious - most people with children older than DD (14 mo) still seem to use them; we do, but wonder why, really? (smallish house, goodish sleeper)

I just found mine still in its packet under our bed - DD3 is 19months so don't think I'll start using it now

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 11/03/2010 20:12

ds2 is 21 months and we still use his. He's only upstairs in a 3 bed semi but I still like to have it on!

harimosmummy · 11/03/2010 20:13

I still have a video monitor for DS (20 months) because I can tell by his body language if he's just trying it on or if he needs me (if he needs the loo or is sick). So I like that.

DD (6mo) doesn't have one at all, but that's because she sleeps with me!

We live in a smallish 2 bed house. I used one for ds 1 for 6/7months, but didn't need it at all! Then haven't used one since as I can usually here dc's if they're really crying, and I check on them every now and again. However, come summer and bbq's I'll probably use it if I'm out in the garden in the evening's, as I won't hear them.

Heated · 11/03/2010 20:16

After about 7m.

We had an expensive Tomy baby monitor. Dh had to unwire the stupid room temperature alarm sensor which seemed to register the heat the unit generated rather than the actual room temperature; it interfered with the phone signal and although we have quite a big house, we certainly managed to hear ds. Didn't bother with one with dd.

farmerjones · 11/03/2010 20:16

4ish months. by that age, if theyr really needed me, they could scream loud enough. biggish house.

weegiemum · 11/03/2010 20:17

Never had one.

Northernlurker · 11/03/2010 20:18

I still use ours and dd3 is 3 next month. I'll carry on using it for maybe another year I suppose? Till she's big enough to get up and come and get us if she wants us. She sleeps well but I just like to know I can hear her really well if I needed too.

thatsnotmymonster · 11/03/2010 20:19

a few months for ds and never for the girls who are now 3yrs and 22mths. Have never really seen the need. You can hear them if they cry and check on them at other times.

I just found the monitor made me more paranoid and disturbed my sleep.

ILiveinhope · 11/03/2010 20:20

Never had one, another way to get money out of naive parents.

You hear your child without the help of a bay monitor unless you live in a f"""king mansion.

TheCatAteMyGymsuit · 11/03/2010 20:28

My moment of pfb-ism - DD is 3 and we still use one. But then, we do live in a f-ing mansion , well at least a large enough house with loads and loads of floors so I wouldn't hear her if she, for example, was ill in the night.
Well, I possibly would if I didn't ever watch telly or play music, but we like to live a little in the evenings!
Disclaimer - I would never have a monitor in my bedroom, that's just bordering on neurosis.

drivingmisscrazy · 11/03/2010 20:28

I Live in hope - ah, have some compassion for us poor first-timers, despite our poky little terraces mansions

Till DS2 was about 3. I wear earplugs to bed because DP snores so it was the only way to hear if they woke and needed me in the night.
They rarely wake in the night now and if they do DP can deal with it

mnistooaddictive · 11/03/2010 20:38

I still do for DD2 who is 17 months but her bedroom is furthest from ours and if she crys when I am asleep I wouldn't hear her otherwise. Once she is in a bed and come and get me I will stop. I don't use it when I am awake as I hear her.

WorzselMummage · 11/03/2010 20:38

I used an angel care alarm till dd was two and plan to do the same with ds.

overmydeadbody · 11/03/2010 20:39

I have never even used a baby monitor

Lionstar · 11/03/2010 20:43

I know someone who still uses one of those breathing/motion sensor pads for her son, who will be 5 in September

I use a sound monitor for DS who is 6 months. I could hear him scream without it, but like hearing him 'talk' to himself too.

notcitrus · 11/03/2010 20:48

Only used it for the first time around 9mo when visiting ILs. Up to 5mo he was in a moses basket near me anyway. I only use it now when MrNC is away to ensure I do hear ds if he wakes, as my hearing is crap and I've got a lot better at sleeping through him. Or if we've got people round and the lounge door shut, to ensure we hear.

MarionCole · 11/03/2010 20:48

Still use ours and DS will be 3 soon. I wouldn't hear him crying without it and he doesn't get out of bed on his own, so if he was upset he would just lie there crying.

nowwearefour · 11/03/2010 20:51

dd1 i used it til dd2 came along (when dd1 was 21 months). dd2 i stopped using it when she was 6 months old. amazing how much better she slept after that

taffetacat · 11/03/2010 20:52

Used one for DS until he was about 1 then just if he was ill for about another 6 months.

Didn't bother with DD 3 years later, she was in our room for about 6 months and then next door.

allaboutme · 11/03/2010 20:59

still use mine, have one in each boys room - they are 4 and 2! i do live in 3 storey house though and so wouldnt hear them without the monitors. only use them when downstairs in the evenings obviously, never used one overnight as all on the same floor then

usualsuspect · 11/03/2010 21:04

I never had one,all mine made enough noise for me never to need one

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 11/03/2010 21:11

I also have an AngelCare alarm for DD, 14m. I don't know when I'll stop using it, probably when she moves from a cot to a bed. I know I don't really need it, but I like hearing her chatting to herself and it stops me running upstairs every hour to check on her. She's not even my PFB, so I must be an uber-neurotic mum!

pointylog · 11/03/2010 21:26

We never used one. That's how radical we were.
