What's it like having a boy?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to mumsnet! I'm now 20 weeks pregnant and found out yesterday that I'm having a little boy. My boyfriend and I are just delighted to have a healthy baby and are still in amazement at the fact that we're going to be parents.

Thing is, as an only child I've never grown up around boys (other than the ones that I was dating! ) and I just don't have a clue what it's like having a boy. How is it different having a baby boy to a baby girl? (other than the really obvious)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I had a girl first and couldn't imagine how I'd be with a boy. But he's marvellous! He's such a happy little man and so much fun! (1 now) He's a worse sleeper than DD was but very laid back. I think it'll always depend on the child but it'll just come naturally. Enjoy!

mazzystartled · 27/02/2010 20:14

It's wonderful.

Ingles2 · 27/02/2010 20:15

Brilliant!
There's no difference to having a girl. I promise you every child is totally different and if you had 10 of the same sex none would be that alike.
Forget about preconceived stereotypes, you're having a child! he will be wonderful.
and welcome to Mumsnet

Baby boys and baby girls aren't very different. The differences only really start to show when external influences take hold - whether it's being treated differently by the parents and family, or interacting with friends and wanting to do the things they like to do.

I'm really hoping my boy doesn't end up a football prat, like so many of them seem to. I'm going to fight it all the way!!!!

Little boys are so loving, you'll get lots of hugs and kisses, my two boys tell me every day that they love me which makes my heart melt

ben5 · 27/02/2010 20:18

boys are great fun. loads of mess and noise.

Reallytired · 27/02/2010 20:18

My little boy is lovely. He is kind and caring and loves to give me lots of kisses. When he grows up he wants to marry me. He is imaginative and makes me laugh. He eat whatever he is given and is easy going. As a toddler he was never still and loved to climb and explore.

My little girl is more sedate in temperment. She is extremely fussy about having a wet nappy. Her speech is more advanced than my son's was at her age, but I think my son was physically more active. It is hard to compare them as my daughter is only 10 months.

It is important to remember there will be variations between individuals because of different personalities rather than necessarily being male or female.

Piffle · 27/02/2010 20:24

utterly exhausting in my case
Enjoy!

overmydeadbody · 27/02/2010 20:26

Boys are wonderful!!!!!
smile]

I love them.

And, as you have no experieince of habing girls either, I really don't think you need to worry.

It's having a baby that you will have to get used to, regardless of its gender! It will have its own personality, no two children are alike, so don't do too much stereotyping just yet!

Boys are great though

abride · 27/02/2010 20:32

Boys are great. They adore their mothers.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 27/02/2010 20:34

I had 2 girls first and when I had ds I was worried about what kind of relationship I would have with a boy. I needn't have worried! Of the 3 of them, he seems to be the one most "like" me in personality. He is smart, funny and incredibly cute. Feel very glad to have a boy now (as well as my 2 beautiful girls, obviously!)

orienteerer · 27/02/2010 20:36

Active, exhausting but lovely (and so glad I don't have to do the pink, girlie stuff)

BertieBotts · 27/02/2010 20:38

Boys are lovely I like the challenge of finding nice, brightly-coloured clothes for him, but also comfortable and without slogans like "cheeky monkey" on - it's fun. Also on the clothing side is relishing the fact everything is not pink!

I haven't had a girl so I don't know what they are like in comparison but DS is affectionate, active (he seems to be gravitating towards anything vaguely ball-shaped already and from quite young has loved to watch sports on TV... sigh) and loves to make everyone laugh.

BertieBotts · 27/02/2010 20:39

Ohh and top baby boy tip - always point the willy downwards in the nappy, and have a spare cloth/tea towel/etc to hand to protect yourself from any little fountains!

absinthe · 27/02/2010 20:46

I have one of each and I have to say I am much closer to my little boy - we absolutely adore one another. My dd is v sociable, independent etc but ds (even at 4) can literally clamp himself to me if I try and leave the room and he wants me to watch a prog with him. He gives me a big, sloppy kiss while drifting off (without even knowing it). He is somewhat delayed compared to dd so I have secured his future financially speaking, because I simply don't know if he would be able to cope if something terrible happened to me, whereas dd is emotionally a lot more resilient.

BOYS ROCK

Valpollicella · 27/02/2010 21:07

Boysarelikedogs has the most literal nickname ever

Regular meals, lots of fresh air and walks(/runs) and you're good to go

I've found boys to be much more physically active, but much more emotionally attached.

Although I agree with other posters who have said that each child is different!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 27/02/2010 21:10

I don't really know as I have 3 and have nothing to compare it with.

Due a girl in April, so will see.

shockers · 27/02/2010 21:15

Absolutely fantastic

Lozza79 · 27/02/2010 21:16

Thanks for your messages, it's really good to read about all your experiences! I'm definitely going to remember the tea towel / willy shower tip too... My bf and I are very excited, slightly terrified and looking forward to the times ahead with our little boy.

I'm thinking the same thing, have 3 girls already about to have a boy, there's none in our family well apart from DP.

It will be strange but kind of nice to find out if her is different to the girls.

Ceebee74 · 27/02/2010 21:21

I love my 2 boys so much They are 3.7 and 15 months old now and they are just totally adorable!!

They are incredibly active (well DS1 is anyway!!) but I always think of Boysarelikedogs nickname and it makes me smile - it is so true!! We cannot spend a day in the house as DS1 goes completely crackers but he is so affectionate and totally loves me DS2 is also showing definite signs of being a mummys boy which suits me just fine!!
