what do you call DD's lady bits?!

I was shocked the other day when I heard my sister say to my niece (nearly 4) 'let me put some cream on your vagina, it looks a bit sore'. She is a teacher, and said their PSE teacher at school said it was important to use the proper names from the start, partly so they learn not to feel embarrassed about body parts etc, also so they can always tell you if something is wrong etc.

I've never thought of myself as a prude but I was really shocked! It seems such a grown up word for a little girl. My DD is 22 months and we don't have a name for her bits as such yet, though she knows what all her other body parts are so I guess I should call it something...

What does anyone else call it?? I know my SIL uses the word foofoo with her DDs, and I vaguely remember my mum referring to your 'inbetweenies'!

In our house girls have a 'Flower' and boys have a 'Willy'.

Snorbs · 19/02/2010 00:18

"Fanny" or "bits" for DD.

LowLevelWhingeing · 19/02/2010 00:26

Yes, fanny is the word. Seems to have dropped in popularity.

willy and fanny

penis and vagina

for whatever occasion.

'Dinky'

LowLevelWhingeing · 19/02/2010 00:53

Willy seems to be pretty popular.

LowLevelWhingeing · 19/02/2010 00:56

Sorry, posted too soon. meant to say,

Willy seems popular and established, how come there isn't consensus about girls' bits?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 19/02/2010 06:54

My dd started out with a woo woo (I don't know where from), progressed to a 'gina then finally settled on a bit. singular. she can call it what she wants as long as she washes it regularly.

sunshiney · 19/02/2010 07:12

I've taught my little girl (2.5yrs) it is her vagina. When she refers to it it sounds perfectly ok to me, not sexual at all, as was suggested on here.

To my mind, calling it a foofoo, flower, ladybits etc is sexual as it attaches it with a certain kind of forbiddeness.

JoeyBettany · 19/02/2010 07:23

It's a bobbins.

MoChan · 19/02/2010 08:04

It really bothers me when people use 'vagina' to describe what is actually the 'vulva'.

Vulva is the term in my head. 'Girl bits' occasionally slips out when I'm feeling coy.

girlsyearapart · 19/02/2010 08:17

mini

onebadbaby · 19/02/2010 08:20

We have front bottom, or sometimes fairy. We have also talked about wee, poo and baby holes. (DD is 4)

She also calls daddys penis his tail (got this from grandma- trying to get her to call it willy as other kids seem to laugh when she says tail)

Have to say the funniest thing I heard her say when she was very tiny (while watching daddy have a wee) was "daddy-have you got a sausage bottom???"

iloveshoesandbags · 19/02/2010 08:29

Minnie for girl and doodley for boys
Latter was amusing when I was pg with second. DD1 was reading names book trying to help choose a name when she came across one and was shocked that you could call a boy by a rude name.
I had to explain, without laughing, that Dudley wasn't doodley..... needless to say I've written that in the memories book to keep reminding her as she gets older....

GibbonInARibbon · 19/02/2010 08:35

Vulva and vagina here. I cannot understand why people won't use the correct term tbh. would you call arms flifffluffs or legs dididods?

nooka · 19/02/2010 08:36

dd knows that the outside parts are the vulva, and inside she has a clitoris and a vagina. But she still seems to prefer front bottom. I do think it is helpful for whatever word they use to be meaningful outside their immediate family, as some of the names seem rather idiosyncratic, which might be problematic if you aren't there to interpret for them. I also think that the reason why there isn't a proper common name is because it not being polite to talk about girls genitalia, but of course just fine to talk about boys.

My son, 3.4 said yesterday 'DD9wks's has a different hole.' I said 'What do you mean love?' reply 'It doesn't have hair.'. So, then came the explanation about getting hair when you are older.

My son has always called where wee comes from in me a 'hole', because he asked where my wee came from, and this is what I said (I don't even know the medical term for wee hole!).

He says 'I've got a willy, daddy's got a willy and mummy's got a hole, aunty soenso has a hole etc.' You do get some laughs from that!

The other day he asked me how animals make babies.... I really don't know where to go with that at his age!

Patsy99 · 19/02/2010 18:01

We started with "front bottom", went to "girls bottom" but now I think with DS we're just going to go with vagina. He started getting confused about girls not having back bottoms and that's us being prudish & confusing him. I don't think there's anything shocking about the word vagina, it's just an anatomical word. My main objection is that it's a bit medical sounding.

Themagicnumber · 19/02/2010 20:13

Blimey StewieGriffinsMom, I must have missed the porn film showcasing the flower fairy. Obviously you move in different circles to me (but each to their own).

I had no idea that the word 'flower' had become so sexualised - the National Trust will never be the same again.

GrumpyBlumkin · 20/02/2010 00:44

Onebadbaby @ sausage bottom

my ex used to walk around naked until DS1 gabbed his penis from behind and gave it an almighty tug

he nearly shot through the window

wore pants after that

gigglewitch · 20/02/2010 01:15

DD still calls hers "bottom bits" - other labels are being introduced, I'm another one who can't stand weirdy words for it all, but I think they need to be a bit older than 3 using terms such as vulva/vagina and so on. I've got no idea why I think that way, I'm not at all embarrassed over anything and my boys who are 6 and 9 are also very comfortable with naming and explaining anything they're concerned about or need information on. (the 6yo has also come up with 'peanuts' and 'weenis' - no doubt aided by his schoolmates ) But anyway, bottom bits will be staying for the mo until she understands more. She's still struggling with the fact that her brothers can wee standing up and she can't!!

mrspoppins · 20/02/2010 01:31

To my mind, it sounds very odd to hear young children using medical names for such...I have always called them wee wee for girls and willy for boys and bottom(obviously, got both
I think it sounds fine to say...your wee wee looks a bit sore...etc... or wash your wee wee please...etc... I shall not go on as it seems a tad unnecessary

dontrunwithscissors · 20/02/2010 13:21

It hasn't come up with DD1 yet - not sure what name to use. My parents called it a wee wee box.
