I used to come on this topic a year or so ago and post on the general hand holding support thread but it seems to have gone so I'm hoping there might be enough of us to start a new one.

I'm in my final leg of a M.Ed in Education and am currently writing my thesis which is going very slowly okay but am struggling to find time, motivation or energy to study. It would be nice to know others are in the same boat and have a place to handhold, moan, swap tips and motivate each other.

I'll be getting a named degree in physics(hopefully lol). Someone at the OU did try to talk me into doing an open degree so I could take the maths ed courses. But I am still so unsure of what I want to do. Hopefully this way I'll be leaving my options open and taking enough L3 maths courses to be able to do the master that the OU offers.
I wish I could fully commit to a career. How long have you known that you want to teach?

VJay · 25/03/2010 17:47

I've always wanted to teach, but never had the opportunity to go to uni, or rather I took a year out and never went back. I am confident I want to teach but I'm scared about it too, I know once I'm doing it it will be fine, but you hear such horror stories. Whenever I tell people what I plan to do I get the response 'rather you than me', very helpful! How do you feel about it?

  • no linky, sorry!

i'm so chuffed! it sounds like they've got ms o'reilly bound and gagged and tied to a chair so she can't talk about it, but they've found a way to carry on!

sorry. as you were.

Hi everyone

So sorry I haven't been around but life has become hectic, hectic, hectic just lately.

I will try and make a better contribution over the Easter break actually scrap that I have 3 dc's under 5, add hyperacticvity from chocolate overload and that's a combination for disaster

Promise will be back soon + I think I may have cracked my dissertation subject area and question!!

Hope you are all doing well...anyone up for sharing aims and goals for the Easter period. I was thinking with could push/encourage and shame each other into doing some productive work.

Molesworth · 26/03/2010 10:08

Haven't checked in here for ages because I've been spending 87498573 hours on the new feminism topic instead of writing essays

Molesworth · 26/03/2010 10:09

Good idea about sharing goals/targets Jaq - an accountability partners sorta thing?

VJay · 26/03/2010 11:10

My goal over the Easter hols is to finish the block I'm on and finish TMA2 and the relevant CMA, then I am half way through the course. A reasonable goal as I will have both ds's at home, and dh is working over the whole of Easter.

madwomanintheattic · 26/03/2010 13:59

thanks moley! (and get off the other board! i've popped over there a few times - and noticed you on the book club thread (stalker alert) but i'm trying to resist posting. i'f i get sucked, in, i may as well kiss goodbye to getting the reading i need to do finished!)

am liking accountability partners idea a lot. in theory i have one in the uk, but tbh he's worse than i am. all i get is an e-mail saying 'have you done any work? i haven't...'

tis not exactly inspiring. he's single and a full time student. i want to frog march him to a computer and a bookshelf with a gun at his back and say 'loooooooook!'

i'm up for it.

AntirhinumMajus · 26/03/2010 14:32

Well I just crashed & burnt on the assignment......52%

Out of 4 parts I got 12/15 & 19/20 which is great but for the other 2 I got 11/25 & 12/40

I know I wasn't happy with it - but I didn't know why

Molesworth · 26/03/2010 21:07

Gah, sorry to hear that Anti! Mind you, 52 isn't a hideous mark (but it did sound like a bit of a hideous assignment). Did you get useful feedback?

AntirhinumMajus · 26/03/2010 21:09

Well there was a lot of feedback - I'm not sure I understood it or the question any better after it

I felt a bit stupid & out of my depth

Molesworth · 26/03/2010 21:15

Of course you're not stupid, I am sorry you're feeling like that anti It's horrible getting a disappointing mark. If the feedback is unclear I'd email or ring the tutor to ask for clarification. Does the next assignment look any better?

AntirhinumMajus · 26/03/2010 21:20

Well I'll have a proper look tomorrow - but it looks almost identical in format

& I have been struggling with the course content this time

I'm starting to wonder if it's the right course for me - the fact that I have to book the next course by the end of may (because the rules for using Tescos vouchers has changed) - is making me even scareder (iyswim)

Molesworth · 26/03/2010 21:26

Ditto with the tesco vouchers. I got mine in today's post so must sort out October's course payment soon.

What course are you thinking of doing next anti? Are you focusing on tech courses? Sorry I'm not sure which course you're doing at the moment (you've probably said but have brain like sieve). I've changed direction a couple of times in my time with the OU. Started off intending to do modern languages!

AntirhinumMajus · 26/03/2010 21:29

this is what I'm doing

this is what I thought I wanted to do

AntirhinumMajus · 26/03/2010 21:30

not sure if this one worked

Molesworth · 26/03/2010 21:32

oh wow, similar titles: very different content! Have to say the one you're doing looks fascinating but very challenging The level 3 course looks more vocational. Does it link in to your work?

AntirhinumMajus · 26/03/2010 21:34

Ummm no

I'm in childcare.........

Molesworth · 26/03/2010 21:37

In a management role though, or doing the course to get into a management role?

I've just been guided by whatever lights my fire the most at the time rather than any specific vocational objective, tbh

AntirhinumMajus · 26/03/2010 21:39

In management yes - if I get a degree (any degree) I can do an Early Years Professional Status qualification (in 4 months) which is the qualification to aspire to

I could have done a childcare degree but I thought management would be more useful.......now I'm not so sure

Molesworth · 26/03/2010 21:41

Maybe you could call the OU and speak to a course adviser (sp? advisor?) about the best route to take?

AntirhinumMajus · 26/03/2010 21:46

Probably - it's tricky to know what to do

How is yours going?

Molesworth · 26/03/2010 21:47

How many points do you need anti?

Mine's going OK thanks - I'm not very far into the course yet but enjoying it so far and it's within my comfort zone (I'm doing DA204 - Media)

AntirhinumMajus · 26/03/2010 21:50

Media - now that would scare me

I have 120 at level 1 & 30 at level 2 - so I have a way to go yet (well if I finish this one I'll have 90 at level 2 so I am nearly halfway there (I hope))

I think I am well out of mine - the 12/40 really threw me
