Hi, thought I'd start a thread to see if any other MN'ers are doing K204 working with children and families this feb (OU)?

I know awassailingforanswers is doing it, but any others?

bumpety bumpety - due to start studying today

cordonbleugh · 06/02/2010 22:24

I was just coming to bump this! Didn't think anyone had seen it lol

I've done all the intro stuff, and read up to topic 2 I think (was weeks ago now!) but not actually done anything in terms of highlighting/notetaking/activities etc.

Would make a start tonight but struggling to keep my eyes open!

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

I brought the stuff downstairs tonight............and the rest is in another thread I started earlier in chat

cordonbleugh · 06/02/2010 22:51

I saw your good studying intentions got disturbed! Will you get time to make a start tomorrow night?

OP posts:
ToccataAndFudge · 06/02/2010 22:54

yes - I'm about to make sure of it - he wants another extension on his "overdraft" (loan) from me (to be paid back on Tuesday when his benefits come in.......and to be fair to him he has always paid money back like that when he's borrowed it).

Haven't given him an answer yet........but am about to say yes, with a condition.

That from 8.30-10 every night (unless I have a meeting or something so can't study then) is guaranteed TV/music free time downstairs

ToccataAndFudge · 06/02/2010 23:08

oooo - just flipping through the assessment guide - am already loving Option 1 for TMA06 - as that's what happening with us with the Family Support worker - a "multi-agency" meeting is already on the cards

cordonbleugh · 06/02/2010 23:16

I like your thinking! I guess I'm lucky in that respect, in that I'm on my own and so the only distractions ie: telly, are my own fault!

It will be easier once you've moved out though.

(have you seen the pic I uploaded on FB of my "study" btw?

OP posts:
ToccataAndFudge · 06/02/2010 23:29

oooo nice

I've not put mine up yet (obviously) lol.

Should be easier in the new place actually as it's a separate dining room and living room - and I'll stick the computer in the dining room.

So will be easier to escape from the boys to the next room for a bit (thankfully DS3 isn't too phased about me disappearing out of the room for while).

cordonbleugh · 06/02/2010 23:34

Lol, well thats up in my bedroom but apart from the times DD is at nursery, especially when she's in all day on mondays, I'll only be studying in the evenings.

For DD, it's normal for me to be in a different room and her left to her own devices (luckily house is not very big lol)

OP posts:
ToccataAndFudge · 06/02/2010 23:38

well it is for me too - it's just not the done thing to admit it on here

GypsyMoth · 06/02/2010 23:43

i did k204 a few years back and must say it was one of the more enjoyable courses...was working towards the health and social care degree, but hit stumbling block with the level 3's ,so looks like i wont be completing the degree now....and the ten year rule they have now brought in makes most of my ou study obsolete""

but that particular course was good

cordonbleugh · 06/02/2010 23:45

haha obviously, I'm a very hands on parent, always doing crafts/baking/going on day trips/ playing with educational resources etc And the times DD gets left to her own devices is intentional, to promote independent play and development you see.

OP posts:
ToccataAndFudge · 06/02/2010 23:49

Tiff - I'm working towards Health and social care degree too - but now I've got K101 out of the way going to be gearing myself towards the "social" side of things.

Looking forward to this course,

ToccataAndFudge · 06/02/2010 23:51

crafts - yep tiny pack of playdough DS2 got for Christmas from his teacher + making paper aeroplanes with each other.

baking - yes - DS1 often makes toast for their lunch

going on day trips - yep we all walked down to the shop today even though H said he would watch them

playing with educational resources - yep Cbeebies/CBBC websites

cordonbleugh · 06/02/2010 23:53

That's good to hear TIFFANY, which other courses did you do towards the HSC degree if you don't mind me asking?

I've got K203 Working for health planned for october, then K303 managing care, KE308 youth perspectives and practice, and finally, K311 promoting public health.

Should finish oct. 2013!!

OP posts:
cordonbleugh · 06/02/2010 23:59

lol pretty similar here TAF -

crafts - playdough, cutting shapes out of plain white paper, colouring in

baking - ermm, DD often comes down and makes her own breakfast before I get up! (cereals that is, I draw the line at a 3 year old using appliances lol)

Day trips - nursery, library, weekly shop!

Educational resources - she can work the tv for cbeebies/nick jr, the dvd player for charlie and lola dvds, the wii to play dora/peppa pig games, and can get on bbc iplayer on my laptop by herself lol

i did k100 to start.....all changed now i think...ed209,k204,k201. failed k301. it was work based and i wasnt working,so had nothing to apply it to,which was a shame as i was eligible for a re-sit,but was divorcing so it didnt happen. could just do a level 3 non work based course and gain an open degree, but ten year ruling confuses it!

oh well, happy to start again with a new degree, just so much choice

ToccataAndFudge · 07/02/2010 00:05

K101 is (I think?) the replacement for K101.

It was ok.....but I did find that I knew a lot of it already so found it hard to really engage with it.

I've only glanced through the stuff for this course but I can already see there's stuff that's going to keep me interested better

cordonbleugh · 07/02/2010 00:06

will you continue with OU? What career are you aiming for? I'ts taken me a good few years (and having DD) to realise what I actually want to do with my life! Keep seeing dream jobs advertised locally, but I'm a long way off being qualified for them!

OP posts:
cordonbleugh · 07/02/2010 00:09

Am I right in thinking you're considering family support work as poss career TAF? If so then similar to me, and K204 most definately looks 100% relevant to what I want to do.

In fact, DD's godmother is a FSW, I showed her the study calendar with the titles of all the topics we'll be covering and she said that she deals with all of that pretty much every day at work.

OP posts:
ToccataAndFudge · 07/02/2010 00:09

who me? or Tiff?

ToccataAndFudge · 07/02/2010 00:10

oh x posts with you

ToccataAndFudge · 07/02/2010 00:11

yes thinking Family Support - it would appear that "Social Services" FSW does (slightly) different stuff to say the Children's Centre's ones - so I'll see where I end up.

cordonbleugh · 07/02/2010 00:19

from the job adverts I've been looking at recently, the childrens centre role seems to be more focused on outreach and advocacy, helping disadvantaged groups to access services, and also on organising and implementing the services themselves (oooh I DID learn something from K101!!)

And then obviously social services would be working with families that have been referred to them for what ever reasons.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the childrens centre type role, mainly because I'd like to be more involved with the community as a whole, and in a slightly less formal role iyswim.
