10 month old not crawling or speaking - should I be worried?

Hello I am probably being over worried but just got back after a family Christmas where various comments were made about DD's development.
DD sat at six months but never really rolled over much and always hated being on her tummy. Can move herself a little forwards and backwards if creeping but has done that for a month with not much progression. Also she tends to cry and give up rather than reach a toy.
Most of my NCT group's babies are all crawling. MIL was worrying me though by saying how strange there's an old saying 'late crawling, early talking' but that DD not really doing either. DD says mamamamama and dadadada but it's more babble than words. She clapped early, but doesn't wave goodbye or point to things like babycentre says she should - or like her NCT pals do.
Of course (according to MIL) DH was doing all these things about this time.
She has had a bad time teething (only two teeth through) and gone from sleeping through to waking loads. Should I be worried? What can I do to help? Sorry - I may be overreacting but MIL has made me feel bad!

I wouldn't worry at all. My first baby walked at fourteen months, and now lollops at aged 13 just fine, and didn't talk until she was almost two. Didn't shut up once she'd started though.

CMOTdibbler · 02/01/2010 22:39

No problem at all - DS didn't condescend to crawl until the week before he was 1, but has been ahead of everything else since he walked. My friends twins didn't walk till nearly 2, and weren't much of talkers either, but are fine at 3.5

plantsitter · 02/01/2010 22:40

I hope not! Sounds almost exactly like DD (10.5 months). The trouble with MILs and my mother is that they can't in all honesty remember when things happen. Have you checked the milestones chart on babycentre? That is a lot vaguer (and therefore more realistic) than the emails they send you.

Anyway sounds totally normal to me and if not, I should worry too!

DD was early walker and early talker, DS was late talker and late walker. It's a load of rubbish, don't worry

Uriel · 02/01/2010 22:41

Mine didn't sit up until 10 months! First one didn't speak until 3, so late crawler and late talker.

wuglet · 02/01/2010 22:41

Nothing to worry about at all.

DD didn't move at all (crawl, roll, scoot backwards off her changing mat...nothing) until she was 15 months.

Appreciate being able to find her where you have put her when you come back from the loo while you still can!

Uriel · 02/01/2010 22:41

Is she a big baby - are you a tall family?

samsonthecat · 02/01/2010 22:42

Don't worry, DD2 didn't crawl till 13 months. She can walk just fine now at 2.7

TotalChaos · 02/01/2010 22:42

don't pay attention to the babycentre e-mails or annoying relatives. pointing is a 12-18 month range skill, and as long as she's babbling, that's all you would expect for this age.

thisisyesterday · 02/01/2010 22:43

no, you shouldn't.
i have heard of children saying words by 10 months, but it's really not that usual for them to! apart from the normal babbling and stuff.

and crawling, again, some are by 10 months, but a lot aren't

IMoveTheStarsForChristmas · 02/01/2010 22:44

Speaking? Hell no...

Crawling? My DS crawled at 6mo, Sister's DS crawled at 14mo. Nephew sat at 5mo, my DS didn't sit (and was wobbly) at 8mo. HUGE variation in kids.

all normal.

DS didn't hit the '20 words at 18mo' milestone, but is now 25mo and can't stop him chatting.

please please please don't worry. at all...

IMoveTheStarsForChristmas · 02/01/2010 22:46

oh, and I'm sure you're are lovely, but my NCT 'friends' were very judgey.

2 of them are lovely and i'm still in touch with them. The other two were so focused on their babies achievements. When DS was the last to sit they constantly asked me if I was worried? Um.. no.. he was first to crawl thanks, but you were too self-involved to notice this.

please don't worry x

babyOcho · 02/01/2010 22:48

Sounds fine. DD started crawling at 10months and didnt walk until 17 months. And FWIW she didnt 'sleep through' until 12 months.

It's hard when everyone asks if she is walking/crawling/talking yet. But she does sound as if you dont have anything to worry about.

whattheheck · 02/01/2010 22:51

Uriel - DH tall and she is on 75th percentile for height - but skinny...
thank you for all your words. It's just when someone starts asking you again and again if your baby is doing something you start to worry if not....
She is superclingy at the moment as well (which obviously doesn't help)

I'm pretty sure crawling isn't a milestone so please don't worry - my mother said she never did crawl and went straight from sitting and rolling around to walking at about 15 months.

My DD is 11 months and certainly isn't doing much more than babbling (and scretching!!) - talking seems a long way off.

Uriel · 02/01/2010 23:00

whattheheck - just thinking that if your baby's tall she might take a bit longer - I know mine did.

All of the other babies in my NCT class, sat, crawled, walked and talked before mine and she was born first!

Enjoy your dd.

NoahAndTheWhale · 02/01/2010 23:01

Neither DS or DD did any talking at 10 months. DS was crawling but DD never crawled - she starting shuffling along about 11 months I think.

Talking doesn't generally happen until a bit over one I don't think.

franke · 02/01/2010 23:03

I think you'll find grandmothers other people are always very impatient to see babies reach certain goals. You've got nothing to worry about. None of my 3 started saying anything till they were well over a year old. dc3 is 21mo and only really just starting to say stuff. Some babies don't bother crawling, they go straight to walking, others crawl early and do so for months ( and months) before bothering to walk. Chill, she sounds fine to me

whattheheck · 02/01/2010 23:03

maybe i have just lucked out and am in an nct group with huge amounts of early developers - plus of course being married to the baby genius that was DH

OP posts:
franke · 02/01/2010 23:05

Isn't that just always the way My dh was also the sweetest, brightest, most advanced little genius ever

BitOfFun · 02/01/2010 23:05

Both of mine were bum-shufflers- they never ever crawled.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 02/01/2010 23:06

No, you shouldn't be worried.

DS3 was exactly the same - has just started cruising - he was 1 on 3rd Dec.

He was not making any attemp to move at 10 months - just sitting up.

He says 'Mamamam' , 'Dadada' and 'Whassis?'

He makes angry objective noises while pointing his finger at me if he does not like what I am doin - like moving him away from dogs' water bowl.

Clary · 02/01/2010 23:06

No 10mos speak do they?

DD is and always had been very vocal. Her first word really was her older brother's name (aah sweet) at just past her first birthday.

Not all babies crawl. I know lots that crawled later than 10mo or that just didn't bother with it at all.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 02/01/2010 23:07

MIL said on boxing day 'both mine were walking by 9 months....' but she is a twit, so I ignore her.

Bambinoloveseggbirds · 02/01/2010 23:10

Whattheheck, my DS is 1 next week and started crawling a bit under 10 months - he toyed with it for ages but seemd to keep sticking his leg out rather than go forward. I thought it would never happen but it did. He also sat up early but never rolled. He only started babbling consonants recently too and says gaa, baa and dee instead of da -but none of this mama and dada like everyone told me he'd be doing by 10 months.

I try not to worry now, he seems happy and is a giggling little flirt who will address his public when he's good and ready Bloody milestones.
