Mummy or Mum?

DS1 (age 7) has just started a new school and he thinks that he is under pressure to start calling me "Mum" instead of mummy. DS2 (age 5) is ok to call me Mummy though.
What's the norm at your DC's school?
Personally i think they should call me whichever name they choose, but then I'm not 7 and trying to fit in...

dd is just under 3 and she calls me Mum. Or rather Muuu-um said in a very whiny voice. She called me Mummy till she went to preschool. Now she only calls me Mummy if she's (a) ill, (b) scared, or (c) upset. I can't be bothered to care what she calls me, got bigger battles to fight - like getting her to eat her veggies for example

Ds is 11 and still calls me mummy. He started calling me mum at age 7 and I really missed the 'mummy'. I told him that when the baby arrived, he'd have to call me mummy so the baby learned! He's called me mummy ever since(even in front of his friends)and Dd's now almost 3. I like it!

Mine (6 and 9) call me mum. DS2 started it at a distressingly early age - about 3 I think.

mine call me either mum, mummy or muuuuuuu-U-uuuuuuum. Depends on mood and/or what they want! . They are 9 & 10.

I remember when they used to call me Mama

ilovesprouts · 16/12/2009 07:11

i get mummy from ds1 whos 3 and mum from my 2 older dcs

nooka · 16/12/2009 07:14

I was very happy that my two still called me Mummy, but ds (10) recently switched to Mum only. He told me he was a "very young man" or pre-teen now. A touch of "Kevin" has definitely entered our house.

harecare · 16/12/2009 07:15

My 2 year old sometimes calls me Mum instead of Mummy which is annoying. My friends dd of same age sometimes does it too. I STILL call my Mum Mummy, but I always called her "my Mum" at school.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/12/2009 07:39

My dd 8.7 calls me mum. We had a time of mOm when she had an american friend, she also went through a phase of calling me by my first name. She has experimented with mother following a secret seven frenzy and tried Mutti when we first moved to Switzerland. She can call me what she wants as long as it is in a reasonable tone of voice.

my ds 7 stills calls me mummy and dh daddy, sometimes he will switch to mum/dad but that when he is neing chheky!

Florin · 16/12/2009 14:51

I still call my parents mummy and daddy and I am 26. Sort of family tradition though as mum-ma (our name for my grandmother) who is 95 is still called mummy by all 4 of her children including my nearly 70 year old uncle! I really like it and have never been teased about it.

littleducks · 16/12/2009 14:53

I still call my mum 'Mummy' though am starting to stop now they sign b'day cards 'Mum and Dad'.

My kids call me Mama

midori1999 · 16/12/2009 14:56

My children have never called me 'Mummy', but 'Mum' and I have always called myself 'Mum' to them and insist others do it. Much easier for them to say and I prefer it.

drinkystinkyuletidegubbins · 16/12/2009 15:01

My DS1 has started preschool - aged 3.5 - and started calling me mum rather than mummy as its what all the big boys do....

quinne · 16/12/2009 15:55

Do some people finding Mummy insulting or something? As I was picking DS1 up from school a couple of weeks ago, the teacher said to another child "your mummy is here" when she saw the woman in front of me. The mother said "I am not Mummy, i am Mum" but it was more the way she said it as though the teacher had just said something very offensive.
I'm guessing but is there something about class in the name choice and the other woman is an inverted snob??

My dd is six and calls me Mummy, ds eight and has never spoken would love to hear him call me anything

WinkyWinkola · 16/12/2009 22:33

I'm mummy or mum. I still can't get used to either. But I think most kids call their mother mummy, don't they?

DS did call me by my first name for a while which I didn't mind either.

giveitago · 17/12/2009 16:10

ds 3.5 calls me mummy and I'm 41 and call my mummy who's 70, well mummy.

MaureenMLove · 17/12/2009 16:13

DD (14) calls me Mummy. Her choice. I didn't sway her one way or the other. I try not to refer to DH as Daddy when her mates are round, but she's perfectly happy with it. She's not the slightest bit bothered what her mates think of her.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 17/12/2009 16:16

DS1 is nearly 6 and he calls me Mummy, I have to say I have pushed it a bit. if he calls me Mum I call him a shortened version of his name he doesn't like that and I said that is how I feel.

I call my mother Mummy and Father - Daddy

whooosh · 17/12/2009 16:20

I want DD to call me Mummy until she is at least 40
She does however, occasionally shout Whooosh where are youoooooooo? WHich is quite amusing as so infrequent.

madusa · 17/12/2009 17:02

I am mummy but my 11 year old dd has started calling me mum occasionally as that's what all of her friends call their mum.

I prefer mummy

BigusBumus · 17/12/2009 17:08

I don't answer to "mum" and I've told the kids that I'll only ever be Mummy!

I still call my mother "mummy" and she still calls her mother "mummy" too as do all the rest of our family.

I couldn't bear to be mum toi be honest.

ItsGrimUpNorth · 17/12/2009 22:34

Why ever not? Why don't your children have a choice as to what to call you? Talk about dictator!
