We used motherese nappies and wraps - pre-baby I loved the tots bots, but was given loads of motherese (with poppers, you can get velcro too) and the motherese were so much easier with a wriggly DS who hated nappy changes from 7 mths. Also the motherese have now done four babies in total (two before us, then my second is now 15mths) and they feel they're coming to the end of their life, so I think they've done well. And obviously free, so very cheap. Freecycle sometimes has nappies on for free, or sample packs can cut down price. But if you're having more kids the value increases.
I only ever had motherese (wet) leaks when my mum used fabric conditioner on them, or sometimes with DD when she has juice, which helps me remember to stay away from juice!
You can get boosters if your DC are big wetters (we have friends kids who were), but definitely experiment and you can always buy more.
For newborns you can just use muslins with a fleece liner in a newborn wrap, rather than buying special little nappies. Folding them in shape becomes very easy and automatic after the first few days of many changes.
Some people said they'd start with disposables at first, then do washables when things easier with baby, but I found it easier to start as you meant to go on, I then never new any different to using reusables, and its never really felt like any kind of hassle. Compared to all the other hassles of parenting its never registered.
Good luck with the birth in february, hope the baby is a lovely sleeper!
