Is it easier to let your kids play outside all night rather than get them in bed at a reasonable time?

I'm asking as after being up since 6.20am with my ds2, ds1 got up at 7, I'm trying to get them in the bath and into bed. Usually they're in the bath about 7, tonight it's later as my dh and I wanted to chat without constant questions/demands so we let them play out the back till about 7.45.

But as usual there's kids out playing while I'm trying to get my 2 in bed and it makes it really hard for me. The kids are aged from 4 till about 6 and the parents don't seem to give a damn, they'll be out there till 9 at the earliest, maybe 9.45.

Am I a looney trying to make sure my 2 get a decent sleep and my dh and I have some adult time, or should I just let them play away outside crossing the road and out of sight till they eventually come home?

My 2 are 4 and 7 years old and the 7 year old can't understand how kids younger than him are allowed out till 9 or 10 and allowed to play way out of sight.

Drives me nuts.

Just to say I'm sorry your having a bad time, Happymum. Sounds awful. You have my sympathies!

P.S. Can anyone tell me how to spell shriek? Is it shreak? It looks wrong every time I write it!

And Mogwai, tell your hubby to cut the grass and be as noisy as poss!

he's cutting it as I speak...we thought 7.15 was a decent time. We had to eat in the kitchen tonight despite glorious weather, as kids nextdoor were absolutely shrieking, can't enjoy a meal with that sort of noise going on.

And that's how you spell shriek

sudden noises are hard- when dh's nephew came to stay (6 months) ds1's shrieks did keep waking him up. Luckily ds2 and ds3 have heard it from the womb so they don't seem to notice. Do you have double glazing?

ssd · 23/06/2005 20:34

Yes jimjams, but I'm thinking about replacing the window in ds1's room, to make it quieter.
Dh thinks I'm mad....

thanks ssd

yeah, due yesterday. Thank god it's a lot cooler today.

What about triple glazing, as a one-off? We live on a busy-ish road and when we built an extension, we had a triple glazed unit put in our new bedroom as it faces the road.

It only cost about £60 more than the double glazed version. Can't say whether it made a difference cos have nothing to compare it to, with the room being new. I have noticed though, that the UPVC windows are better than the wooden double glazing we had previously, all over the house, you can really tell the difference, so I wouldn't recommend wood.

MMmm. Triple glazing might be an idea, if I can get my dh to agree.

Thanks!

Not quite the same, but my neighbours had visitors round last night. They sat in the garden from 5pm to well after 11pm, effectively under my bedroom window. The talking was fine but every couple of seconds one or more of them found something hilariously funny and roared with laughter. Every time I started dropping off to sleep he roared again & woke me up.

You expect a certain amount of noise on a Friday or a Saturday night, but not on a Wednesday during termtime when we've all got to get up for school/work.

I had all the windows shut tight & just couldn't shut out the noise. The really annoying thing is that the house is so well made that had they been indoors with their windows shut they could have laughed all night & it wouldn't have caused a problem. Why are people so thoughtless?

polly2 · 30/06/2005 19:22

why didn't u tell them to keep the noise down and say why. who cares whether they never talk to u again, they're not paying your rent are they?

tallulah · 01/07/2005 07:16

Difficult when you are already in bed. Didn't realise how much noise they were making till I went upstairs.
