Are all 6mo this difficult to feed?

DD is 6.5months and is on 3 meals a day plus 4 bottles. She is gaining weight and is happy and healthy. However mealtimes are a complete battleground and usually ends with her and me in tears. Basically she will eat 2-3 spoonfuls ok and then I have to sing to get her to sit still! She will look everywhere apart from me and often is trying to escape from the highchair. It can take up to 50 minutes to feed her - is this normal?? I am at my wits end and am dreading going on holiday as dont feel that I will be able to feed her in public. Help!!
TIA
Bellie

I think until 1 yo - then milk is still predominantly their main source of nutrition. 6-12mo they are sposed to be getting used to a variety of different tastes and textures.
At 7mo my ds would be having eggy bread or little squares of sandwiches or omlette or shepherds pie and mashed potato or flakes of salmon.
I wouldn't worry about it Bunney - is nigerian food spicy??

Bellie · 26/05/2005 20:39

DD eating better today - the tip with the water really seems to help - thanks highlander - she was not really drinking water before but now seems to want a sip at various intervals with her food.
The distration technique is working too - although have to confess that we are not learning italian at the same time!
DD is on about 24oz a day of milk so not too far over the recommended and I give this to her after her solids so hopefully won't affect her appitite. Intrigued to know what nigerian food is like bunney if you would care to share??

Hi Bellie, just to echo the others relax, I know its hard first time round, DS1 was like your DD and now has a fairly limited (but healthy diet), DD I let go at her own pace and didn't do solids till 10 months and now eats much better than her brother, DS2 seems to be a text book baby for weaning (except not drinking enough milk), but there is still plenty of time for that to all go pear shaped

yes - although they don't have teeth - their gums are really hard anyway - so yes finger foods can be given no probs.
I gave semi soft stuff - like sandwiches with tuna or pulsed chicken, mayo and spring onion, or cream cheese and soft pears. Eggy bread, bits of brocoli and salmon.
Just be ready for lots of slapping of the back when choking.

Is it ok to mix a little bit of gravey in (ds who is nearly 8mths) meals to encourage him to eat. I know it has salt in it but ive just brought bistos reduced salt gravey.

oops sorry...

TracyK · 27/05/2005 10:16

i'm sure it'd be fine if you just put a little bit in. Just make sure that all the other food of the day is low in salt to compensate. But my MIL told me to do it for my ds when he was 6 mo!! that's what 'they' did in the 'old days'.
Tho I used to grate cheese through my stuff for ds to make it a bit tastier.

snowfallinthesahara · 28/05/2005 14:17

a complete battleground is what im going thru at the moment!whats especially worrying me is that ds who is now 7 mnths old never gave me any trouble at ALL during mealtimes and till about 3 weeks ago,was on 3 proper meals a day.
then the resistance started where he would just Not open his mouth!!

we then had to leave on hol for dubai, where i am now, and he is still refusing to eat.my family and i have tried Everything here from singing to him to staying calm, nothing works!!
im not introducing too many new tastes to help keep things familiar, doesnt help.when i gave him babyfood out of the jar,he'd finish a whole one--now hw just throws up if it goes beyond half a jar.he does sleep thru the night tho,but im on my wit's end and is feeding.but food has become an absolute no-no even before we left for holiday!
what do i do???plzz help.

snowfall my big sympathies with you - sorry that I have no help to really offer as I have been taking all the tips of others. The one that has made the real difference to me is the sips of water during the feed.
Hope it gets better for you soon.....

Things have been better recently and dd has been eating really well - however all she wants is the spoon now and no food. If I don't give her the spoon she screams but then she puts the handle in her mouth and won't let me get any food in. Finger foods go in the mouth and then straight out onto the floor.
Is it just patience again until she learns that food needs to stay in her mouth??

they do get better amazingly fast at finger foods. one day my ds couldn't get the hang of anything too slippy - then the next he was sitting eating a packet of wotsits like a proper little boy!
Tho I still have to sweep all around him and chair and he gets 'seconds'.

Meeely2 · 14/06/2005 14:25

my twins are 6 and half months old and just started on one meal a day of veggies (carrots, sweet potatoes etc), they end up wearing most of it! They were premature though, should that be taken into account when feeding them solids? They still have 5 bottles a day (7oz - nearly 8oz when u add the powder) and seem to be taking most milk even at the lunchtime veggie feed....am I over feeding? Is it possible to over feed?

One twin does get sick sometimes during a feed - he starts to cough and then he can't stop and throws up what seems to be a lot of milk, he'll then finish his bottle and be quite happy. Feeding time can be quite stressful because of this - I tandem feed them, so am constantly watching the sicky baby in case he starts to cough so feel i am ignoring the other one who will finish his bottle without too much fuss.

also finding tandem feeding solids a wee bit tricky!

chipmonkey · 14/06/2005 14:53

Meeely2, my ds3 was prem and the paed advised me that solids should be started 6 months from the birth date, not the due date but I would assume that if they are still very little that it would be better to stick to veggie purees and rice for a while rather than moving them on too quickly to other things.

chipmonkey · 14/06/2005 14:55

Sorry Meeely meant to say that I think you reduce the amount of milk very slowly, they still get most of their nutrition from milk at this stage so just increase the solids a very little at a time adn reduce the milk accordingly. How prem were your twins?

Meeely2 · 14/06/2005 15:11

hi chip monkey - they were born at 29+1weeks, 2 and half months early ish. I'm hoping Edward grows out of his coughing fits, it may just be that he's a bit snotty and starting to teeth so producing more saliva...it just means I'm on edge when I feed them, waiting for him to cover me in milk!

I think I'll just let the babies lead, if they start to drink less during a solid feed just give them less, no point force feeding. My only concern is Edward isn't sleeping through at the mo after previously sleeping really well, I'm worried with the sickness he's not eating enough.

chipmonkey · 14/06/2005 16:24

I wouldn't worry too much, its just his system getting used to solids I'd say. Just take it slowly and should be fine!

Meeely2 · 15/06/2005 13:10

Edward completely rejected his carrot yesterday at nursery, then only had 4 oz of milk, so was starvin' by 3pm so they gave hime some baby rice. I think it's the carrot he doesn't like, not the idea of food completely. So they trying him with potatos today see how he goes, if he's the same, will try baby rice again, just to fill him up.

He was up again last night, but I ignored him til he really yelled, then popped his dummy in and he fell back to sleep after a few more mins of chuntering. Convinced DH I don't need to go running the minute he makes any noise....it annoys the hell out of DH cos once he's been woken he reckons he can't go back to sleep and then is tired the next day - oh boo hoo, poor old you, welcome to my world!

chipmonkey · 15/06/2005 20:45

Well, think about it, would you eat a plate of carrots? How about some apple? All my ds's loved it!

kath4kids · 16/06/2005 09:28

My ds would eat nothing unless it was mixed with apple. This went on for months, we gradually mixed less and less apple, until he would eat normal foods on their own, but sometimes he would revert back.
I agree its def. not worth gettting stressed about but easier said than done. He now eats more than dd 28 months. he is 15 months, so which one should i be stressing a about?

Meeely2 · 16/06/2005 10:40

Edward LOVED potato, so hoorah, it was just carrot he didn't like. However, Arthur now has chicken pox! So now at home for a week at least and having to do all feeds myself - trauma!

chipmonkey · 16/06/2005 12:48

Meeely, have you seen this website , great tips and ideas

highlander · 16/06/2005 20:04

chipM - that is a bloody great website!!

thanks - I was getting a bit stressed that DS has been pretty much on the same recipes for months
