TV in the morning - seriously????

Another thing I learn from mumsnet.

Don't get me wrong, the DS are big Cbeebies/DVD fans, much more than I would like (especially DS2).

But it would never actually occur to me to turn the TV on at breakfast-time/before school.

Is this an old-fashioned parenting taboo/hang-up I have?

Do lots of people do this?

Am now at my own because I suppose TV in the morning is no different to TV at night.

No TV in the mornings - we'd never get out of the house. They watch loads of TV in the mornings at the weekends, though. They don't watch much TV during the week, though they used to when they were younger. They seem to have too much to do.

BirdyBedtime · 22/06/2009 21:01

Agree with some of the other posters as we have the TV on (mostly Cbeebies to avoid the advert issue) on non-nursery mornings while in the shower/getting ready just to get peace which I suppose isn't great but otherwise it can take twice as long.

I am not a nice person in the morning, my family and DH will attest to the fact that you do not speak to me until I have woken up properly. I need coffee and about an hour of quiet to be able to function.
Cbeebies saves me from snapping at the kids and upsetting everyone, then when we have had breakfast and I am human it goes off.

I am too tired in the morning to feel bad about it TBH

Wallace · 22/06/2009 21:40

Yes even the discovery channel - you can actually see their brains rot away as they watch.

You should see how much brain rotting occurs on weekend mornings at my house

bruces · 22/06/2009 22:11

my 2 are only allowed tv after breakfast, bath room and once they're fully dressed for school and nursery, they know if its not turned off when i ask they miss out next day.

burningupinspeed · 23/06/2009 12:42

DS absolutely watches TV in the mornings, it is the only way I can eat my breakfast in peace and I can't put a price on that. But then he is off to nursery and we don't put it on afterwards so that's it for the day.

difficultdecision · 24/06/2009 09:49

We've never had the tv on the mornings, it wouldn't dawn on me to put it on to be honest. Does the tv work before the evening?

Coalman · 24/06/2009 09:58

We don't really watch TV on an evening. Not sure why.

The promise of TV when they are completely ready for school encourages my boys to hurry in the morning.

I do record stuff with the freeview thingy though. So its stuff like Horrible Histories, Blue Peter and Smart that they are watching.

Think I am a control freak. Might let them watch what they like tommorow.

TV is banned in the morning on weekdays ... they turn into grumpy zombies if they watch it and I'd never get them out to nursery/school.

ihavenosecrets · 24/06/2009 10:08

It depends what time ds wakes up. If he wakes up before I have showered he creates havoc whilst I am drying my hair so I usually take him downstairs and put the tv on.

He is not a tv addict so I don't worry too much about it.

edam · 24/06/2009 10:10

ds watches TV in the mornings - keeps him entertained out of my way while I'm in the shower/getting dressed. Goes off when we head downstairs for breakfast (sitting room is upstairs next to the bathroom).

This is probably not A Good Thing but am too scared to try a ban, mornings would be even more of a nightmare. (Am NOT a morning person.)

mrsruffallo · 24/06/2009 10:14

Do they need calming down in the morning?
I don't do morning TV but DH does when he gets up with them which infuriates me!

GhostOfPsychomum5 · 24/06/2009 10:21

I think I really would be a psychomum had I banned TV in the mornings!!

that said, some mornings I allow it, others I don;t..really depends on how quick they are getting up, dressed and fed....tis a good bribe for quickness I find

I do remember having a mini breakdown when pregnant with DD3 and the TV blew up. I was seriously deranged without TV to do the mummy-job for me......

i am not getting up at 6am if i dont have too.

i am a bad mother.

movingnow · 26/06/2009 10:12

No TV in the mornings (except weekends). Try cbeebies radio on Radio 7 5-8am.

Lazycow · 27/06/2009 19:12

I use it when I get up later than ds and am desperate for a shower and to get dressed in peace after ds is ready and we have had breakfast. Otherwise he mithers me to play all the time and I'm usually in a rush to get out the door for work etc.

jeee · 27/06/2009 19:15

I suggested tv in the morning on another thread , because I find that it works as a bribe to get them fed and dressed and then keeps them quiet whilst I get on with the morning chores.

duckyfuzz · 27/06/2009 19:17

never on a weekday, but oh yes, on a weekend

amidaiwish · 27/06/2009 19:31

DD1 used to get up at 5 something, so yes TV went on so we could either stay in bed/doze on sofa.
then when DD2 was born, TV went on so i could get ready and they were not trashing the house.

but now dds aged 5 and 3, and DD1 getting up with the sun this clock has changed my life the TV doesn't go on. If it does it is a big fight to get them out the door.

i don't see anything wrong with it though if it makes mornings easier.

theoptimist · 27/06/2009 21:29

My kids take forever to do anything, so I've had to stop them watching TV in morning. In fact, they hardly watch it any time of the day (their choice), and don't really ask for it now.

morocco · 27/06/2009 21:39

i have to force them to watch it sometimes to stop them playing and making a mess

we manage the whole morning routine in 40 minutes so it's not too much telly to fit in round getting up, getting dressed, finding shoes/bookbags/pe kits etc and it gives me time to have a cup of coffee in peace. it's great. highly recommended

applepudding · 28/06/2009 00:21

No TV until washed/dressed/breakfasted - great incentive to get DS to hurry up in the morning. Then he can sit quietly and watch spongebob and stay out of my way whilst I get myself ready.
