Hi,

Last night (I was clothed!) my darling two year old pointed to his willy, then said, "Mummy Willy", and I said, "no (!), Mummy has a Fanny"... and to my astonishment, my DH hates the word 'Fanny'!!! Ho hum.

What do you call 'it' to inquisitive children. Am also expecting DD anytime, and obviously DS is going to see me change her a millions times.

I honestly can't remember what my Mum referred to as mine.

suppose it depends on where your from, when i was little boys always had a tinkle and girls a twinkle, but my dd's nursery is called twinkles.still shes now 4 and twinkle is considered the norm.however if i have a boy it wil definately not be tinkle ill settle for willy.

My parents referred to "wee hole", "baby hole" and "poo hole", as appropriate, when I was little, then we moved on to the anatomically-correct terms later.

My son informs me that my private parts are called my 'Foo'. This is apparently what his childminder's daughter calls them, and he has seen her foo .

She is 6 1/2, ds is 5 1/2. I think he's developing a taste for older women (more experienced, obviously)

Have I shocked everyone?

chipmonkey · 17/06/2005 14:56

Takes more than that to shock around here, Easy! My cousin used to call hers her "twinkle" we assumed it was beecause she lived in England, in Ireland the whole area was "botty"! In secondary school we said "fanny" but in America that means bum so can cause confusion.

emmamama · 17/06/2005 15:00

I've no idea why, but girls bits are known as 'Auntie Mary' and boys are 'willabongs'.

bensmum3 · 17/06/2005 23:00

Why not use the correct anatomical words from the start, children are much more down to earth than we give them credit for, vagina and penis are easy to use words (everyone will understand) and you won't have a lot of awkward questions later on. I am talking from experience at having to explain to my 5 year old where the next baby was going to come out, wished I had used the correct names from the start and will do with ds2.

hunkermunker · 17/06/2005 23:03

If you use the correct anatomical terms, be prepared for them to use them in public when you're least expecting it...

Vagina isn't the whole thing though is it? It's just one bit and not even where the wee comes out. They'd have to learn a lot of words - labia, vagina, clitoris, and er what is the opening for urine called?
I say front bottom. When I was a child it was your "wee" and out of it came "wee wee". Quite odd really but it seemed completely normal to me. Never remember being embarassed!

I was having this exact conversation with my DP only the other day. My DD is only 10 days old so we've got ages to decide, but my DP used the word fanny and I hate it, so we're trying to find something else! When I was young it was always my 'wee wees', I think this is as good as anything really.

JacqJacq · 27/09/2008 18:02

The children where I work (I'm a AP) call it a front bottom (CRINGE) or a bottom - which leads to lots of confusion. When I first arrived I called it a vagina - that didn't go down well with the parents!
