Tie-on cotton or wool nappies and Isme Vismes - any good for a newborn?

charleypops · 07/05/2005 19:31

Does anyone have any experience of tie-on nappies such as these by Disana or these cotton ones by Schmidt at the natural clothing company ?

What did you think?

Which boosters/wrap would you recommend?

I was thinking they might be good for a newborn because they look as if they would fit quite snuggly.

Also any one used Isme Vismes? How would you say they are for newborns?

Thank you

Maiseimog - Lol at your poor baby having to sleep on the box - I bet he was quite cosy and warm actually There are some lovely nappies on that site, the Nile ones look great and really comfy, but I don't have a good track record with Velcro so wouldn't go for those myself I liked the look of those "original" Chinese Prefolds.I'd love to try some of those so i'm going to ask what it would cost to ship some over here.

Lunavix - I've got 2 Tots (and that plus one free sample Pampers is actually my full nappy inventory so can't wait to try those out, I'll look out for some Bumbles now too.

I'm off to look at that Elvika link now...

(thanks for the "iirc" info Hub)

This woman's selling some used nappies. There are a couple of small Poochies (with no Poochies label) in small size, plus loads of one size/birth to potty nappies. Some extremely nice nappies there, but I'm not allowed to spend anymore on nappies for the next couple of months. WAH!

Obviously I don't let ds (Pog) wear nice nappies like those ones below: we have cut up some of the flat pack box and made him some trainer pants. Have to get him toilet trained soon - I mean, he's 6 months old now. He can't just keep acting like a baby!

Maiseymog - it's amazing what you can do with a cardboard box isn't it?!

Where did you find the lady with all those things for sale?

That's a very interesting point about the cut pile on the Isme Vismes giraffeski. Don't like the sound of them tbh if they can't be secured with a nippa.

CP - M&S in central London today had fitted cot and cot bed sheets (yellow, blue) 1/2 price, as well as fleece blankets (yellow / blue) 1/2 price too... I know you've just bought your cot... maybe the same pricing is available in other M&S stores near you...

Have you figured out what sheets / blankets / grobag you fancy ?

misdee · 10/05/2005 21:51

the eco-babe is lovely

charleypops · 10/05/2005 22:38

Hub - I haven't even thought about cot bedding suppose I should. I have however give quite a lot of thought to Grobags, and decided to wait a couple of months before I get one - the vast majority can't be used until the baby reaches 10lbs unless you buy a newborn one, which I'm looking out for on Ebay, but wouldn't buy new as he'll be out of in a matter of a few weeks. I'll have a look at the M&S website for those half price sheets to see if I like them, but I think I fancy all white bedding for some reason?

Oh, meant to tell you I got the cot from Two Left Feet and they did a price match for me with the cheapest on line retailer I found (babydays.co.uk I think) at £134.99, including next day delivery.

Thanks for that link Misdee - there's some good hemp stuff on there I haven't seen before.

Hi again CP - mcbubba will be sporting Totsbots this summer. I was really happy with them on ds but he was 5 mths when we did the switch from crappy Kushies so I've just invested in a starter pack from Totsbots that I got at the Baby Show - much cheapness and money off (and rainbow fleece wraps!)

Spirit of Nature does a good selection of natural nappy stuff - was always intrigued by wool wraps, but opted for just Tots - maybe next time

Charleypops that lady: the one with all the nappies is on a British Yahoo group called sale and swaps. It's all nappies this is the group here
If you have a yahoo account you can just join, if not, you will have to set up a yahoo account first.

Misdee - Are the Eco-babe nappies like Sandy's but coloured?? I like the look of them.
Sorry to hijack but I know that Charley is after as much info as poss aboit everything . Thanks

misdee · 11/05/2005 07:19

havent tried sandys so cant compare. the ecobaby are slimmer and not as absorbant as some nappies, but they are lovely and soft.

Maisiemog · 11/05/2005 10:28

I have to say, now my ds is starting on food, the bf poo is gone. I'm now getting right back into the prefolds, because most of my other nappies are forcing us into the next size up of clothing. Aaargh!
I have always nippa'd them, but now I'm experimenting with laying them straight into the wrap - I'll see how I get on.
He has so many nice things to wear, that I can't fasten. Be warned!!
Another nappy that is really slim and absorbant is the dizzy diaper, it looks too small compared to other nappies, but it works really well, looks cute and is nice and slim.

Cooperoo · 11/05/2005 10:50

Yes clothes are the problem with cloth nappies. They just don't cut them to fit the big bottom. Next esp are dreadful which is such a shame. Top tip for little girls is to buy cropped style trousers in the next size up and they fit great as full length trousers. I even have to get the next size up in skirts although dresses of course aren't a prob. Anybody got any tips for clothie boys??

Maisiemog · 11/05/2005 10:57

I have found M&S and Disney sleepsuits are wide in the posterior, which helps (and Disney stuff is cute!! Tigger, Eeyore & Pooh suits etc...)
Dungies have to be the next size up. All 6-9 month clothing is a nightmare, it's like; 3-6 months clothing - based on human baby average size, 6-9 months clothing - based on Martian chimp baby average size (don't ask!).
Just go: 3-6 JUMP! 9-12

hub2dee · 11/05/2005 10:58

There have been posts before about 'cut for cloth' e/retailers (I think maybe even one for a company by that name !) - try searching the archives for relevant keywords...

Possibly people like the Nappy Lady would have some suggestions ? Or maybe some of the cloth nappy advocates active, for example, during Nappy Week might have good pointers for you...

hub2dee · 11/05/2005 11:00

Maisie: M&S in central London has pooh bear (in very subtle beige) bits half price: muslins, grobag sleeping thingies, cot bumper bars, blankets I think etc... not quite sure if you're all past that stage, or if there's an M&S near wherever you live.

Maisiemog · 11/05/2005 11:48

Thanks Hub, I'll have a look at my local (Edinburgh) branch. I looked online and drat dammit! They don't have any money off their cute clothes!! Pog will be sooo upset (Pog: blank expression, thinks 'why's mummy shouting?' blank expression)

hub2dee · 11/05/2005 12:00

Maise (was) / am I the first to think Pog has an air of Bruce Willis about him ?

(There was only a limited quantity of Disney M&S bits for sale, it wasn't the whole colelction).

Bruce Willis! Eh!?!?! I would definately chuck him out of bed.
Do you think he's the father?! OMG I can't remember that at all, must have been very drunk.
