Not quite at that point yet with my DC, but just wondering what other people have done ?

ds was 2, moved him 6 months before dd came along as didnt want him to feel pushed out
dd was 2.6, she was starting to crash into the bars when she rolled over at night and woke herself up crying
many people wait until their dc can climb out

morey · 28/05/2009 17:56

dd 2.7 will be moving out of her cot tomorrow as new bed arrived today. I reckoned she was about ready as she is potty trained, refuses to wear her grobag now and want's me to sit in her cot to read her (and ds) stories before bed, and its a bit squashed with us all sitting cross legged! She wasn't too keen on the bed idea when I suggested it, but the Dora duvet cover idea seemed to do the trick......
It's a bit sad as all dc have been in that cot over the last 9 years!

oodlesofpoodles · 28/05/2009 18:06

Shortly after 2nd birthday. He wouldn't keep a nappy on and would pee on the floor through the bars.

13.5 months or thereabouts. He had been sleeping great in his cot but after a couple of months of on-off illness ending with a stint in hospital he would only sleep with us.

He took to his bed straight away and slept wonderfully (until recently but we blame that on the molars). He fell out a few times at the start but we kept a duvet by the side of the bed for him to fall on so he was never bothered by it, and he quickly stopped doing it.

Gmac2009 · 28/05/2009 18:22

My ds was two. We wanted him in a bed so we could use the cot for impending dd.
We put a wooden bed guard on the side which I'm sure has helped him settle. Also bought sheets with vehicles on them to make it special and kept him in his sleep bag.
He's now 2y 7m and no problems so far.
He has never got out of the bed himself although he can unzip his bag and climbs in and out of it during play.
Should also mention he has always been a great sleeper.

pavlovthecat · 28/05/2009 18:25

2, when she started climbing out of her cot, falling and sleeping on the floor where she lay. Sweet, but a tad dangerous so we got her a junior bed.

TinkyTaylor · 28/05/2009 18:26

My DD was 22 months as new baby is due in three months time! I have only just made the transition and have had a few trying nights! I went straight for a big single bed to save £ and just put her old cot mattress on the floor in case she fell out-(which she hasn' yet) I tried to steer clear of ahving to put up the staitgate again but did so a couple of nights ago, for my own sanity really as everytime I tried to put her down to sleep, she'd climb back out and down the stairs! So now I have to let her grizzle for a while, then go up and usually pick her off the floor and put her back into bed once she's zonked!!

popsypie · 28/05/2009 18:29

Put dd1 in at about 26mths, possibly a mistake as then the night wandering started. So, with dd2 waited until she was 2yrs and 9mths. Think she would have slept in a cot forever actually but she was getting a bit big for it and trying to get out.

terramum · 28/05/2009 18:33

DS was about 3ish when he started sleeping in a bed. It was already in his room from when we had moved house about 6 months before...but I wasn't in any hurry to change him over. One day he asked if he could sleep in it - so we stopped using the cot

PlantASeedWatchItGrow · 28/05/2009 18:33

DD was 18 months. I just keep her door closed, so she can't wander but I can still hear her.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 28/05/2009 18:42

Sorry for hijack, but did people find that DCs wandered?

TinkyTaylor · 28/05/2009 18:46

Oh yes!! Hence I put up a stairgate as she kept coming into our room for 'cuddles'! at silly hour. The other night my DD had got out and emptied the drawers of all her clothes and nappies at 2.00am!

choufleur · 28/05/2009 18:46

DS was nearly 2. he didn't wander - still doesn't and he's now just 3

terramum · 28/05/2009 18:50

ilovemydogandmrobama - no more than he did before we switched to the bed because he could climb out of his cot anyway . For the last few months of using it we left the side down on it as it was less dangerous for him. He didn't go far usually though - either played with his toys or came into our bed...we'd usually wake him to find him snuggled up between us . As he was older he was fine with the stairs on his own and the house was more of less child proofed so we didn't mind if he wandered about elsewhere or downstairs.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 28/05/2009 19:25

Thanks! DD is 3 in July, and hasn't ever climbed out of cot. I want to put DS in same room, but am afraid she will poke him play with him and keep him awake.

thedolly · 28/05/2009 19:38

Age 1 cot to cot bed (for all 3) no wandering. I think the earlier you do it the less wandering you get.

spicemonster · 28/05/2009 19:44

Can I hijack this thread to ask a question about bed bedding. My DS is just over 2 and after I used a readybed on holiday, won't go back to sleeping in his cot. Which is fine so time to get a proper bed. I was thinking about getting him one of those extendable beds from Ikea but what do you do about bedding? Do you buy tiny sheets and duvets and then bigger ones as you extend the bed? I wanted to get him a nice duvet to enthuse him about the whole idea but I don't want half the duvet trailing off the end of the bed!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 28/05/2009 19:46

DD was 2.5, she kept climbing out to get a book and then climbed back in again, straight to bed and has never wandered.

Ohforfoxsake · 28/05/2009 19:46

Spicemonster - try a cotbed size or single and lay it widthways, tucking one side in as far as necessary

Personally my LO is going into a bed when she can get out of her inside-out sleeping bag and get over the cotbed bars.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 28/05/2009 19:51

Don't some toddler beds use the same size mattress as cot beds?

spicemonster · 28/05/2009 20:00

Cheers OFFS

He can stay in his sleeping bag for the time being but has just occurred to me with a huge thunk that when he is without nappies at night that the sleeping bag is probably not a good idea.

vesela · 28/05/2009 21:55

22 months. Her cot was in our room and one naptime it was incredibly noisy in there b/c of builders on the other side of the wall. So I put her in her big bed in her own room for her nap instead, and that evening she wanted to sleep there again.

She hasn't wandered, I think partly because the design of the bedframe (it's an IKEA Leksvik one) means she has to get out of it quite slowly as opposed to just bouncing out. That'll probably change when her legs get a bit longer...

plimple · 28/05/2009 22:00

Did it this week and she's 2 on Saturday. It's just knackering my back lifting her in and out (am pregnant). Was a cotbed anyway so just took the bars off. She loves it as can get in herself. One of her favourite games is going to sleep and putting dolls to bed. She is being a bit whingey at bedtime now though and saying "no bedtime" less today than yesterday though.

plimple · 28/05/2009 22:05

Oh, she doesn't wander though, just sits in bed "reading". DP did say something stupid like "now when you wake up you can come and get Mummy" so I told her that when she wakes up she can play with her toys and books.

BakewellTarts · 28/05/2009 22:07

3yrs 5mths as I wanted the cotbed (not yet converted into a bed) for her sister.

No problems with sleep and didn't want to rock the boat.

Looks around for wood to touch but no problems since the move either.
