'Chinese Prefolds' vs. Fitted / 'Shaped' Nappies

Hi all,

Was hoping for some experienced advice...

I've been e-mailing Erica at Simons Custom Cloth about her nappies and wraps - to learn more about how they're made and whether they might be good for our new (first) baby. Love the fabrics, prints, customisation options, design etc. etc. Gallery here.

She mentioned that although her nappies would give excellent containment for breastfed explosive poo, that for economy, it might be as wise to consider Chinese Prefolds (or 'Diaper Service Quality' as they're called in the States which are basically an elaboration on the flat Terry / muslin, but with much improved absorbency because they are 4 layered to the sides and 8 layered in the middle... you just fold them to make a rectangle, spread out the top if you need to, and pop into a wrap of some description.

I get the impressions loads of people use this, particularly in the States, as they're so effective and cheap - about $25 for twelve -that's just over a quid each ! 'Bummi Super Whisper Wrap' was suggested as a great, basic wrap too.

So.... I am specifically wondering if there are any experienced cloth users who have used 'Chinese Prefolds' (which isn't the same thing as a Terry done with a 'Chinese' origami fold, but in the same spirit IYSWIM), and fitted nappies (Tots Bots, Motherease, kissaluvs etc. etc. etc.)... do the prefolds leak more and give so much more grief that the more expensive fitted nappies are really worth it, or is it essentially all marketing elaboration (aside from cuteness factor - which I can still achieve with a wicked wrap ) ?

Awwww... sounds like a perfect day (at least as far as dd is concerned !). V. domestic-blissy. dd sounds v. helpful.

We went and looked at two open gardens today. One a small one round the corner. One some Lord in Highgate, North London. V. Big. Bit of cake. Bit of gardening at home. Trying to finalise my planting plan is killing me.

This doesn't have a lot to do with nappies, does it. At least your post mentioned them.

She still sounds like a cutey-pie.

MN should have some area where you can create a crap / scrub Thread which only exists for a v. short while so we don't need to fill your member profile with junk.

Just new there was some veggy past. All the nicest people are veggies.

Also try 'edamame' - soy beans. You can buy them frsh or frozen. Stick 'em in the mic / boil for a couple of mins. V. high protein, nice and tasty.

Yes. Since I was 20 I think. I'm now 34. 35 in August. That's quite a while. DW is too but she eats fish.

Not sure about baby to be...

I would be happy to go veggie, with sensible knowledge of important vits / minerals / proteins / dairy for balanced diet.... but also tempted to allow her the choice when she understands it when she's bigger...

Dunno... might just dictate her morals to begin with. ... I mean parents dictate acceptable behaviour / language / shape attitudes etc. so I don't see why I shouldn't impose mine (assuming no damage to her health) and if she wants to eat some venison later, she's welcome !!!

I do eat eggs though. I wear leather shoes but don't think I'd buy a leather jacket (except maybe if I have a mid life crisis and buy a big Ducatti). I was also torn about buying dd to be a lambskin fleece !

Hard drawing these random lines... my car has leather seats for example (but it was second hand, not my spec, IYSWIM)... then again, if I ever buy a new car I'm not sure I'd follow my leather stance and get a cloth interior... hmmm....

Now I'm boring even myself.

Hey, do you like sprouting beans ?

They don't taste much but they're 'fun'. Crunchy and fill you up in no time. Hmmm... will buy some tomorrow methinks.

So non-leather I had my knackered Birks restored (rubber sole, cork footbed, etc.) to reuse the leather rather than buy a new pair which would have only been a few quid more !

Thanks for the fashion advice. I'm Mr. cas - happies in joggies and shirt. dw always wants me to dress up more and I can't be arsed. It's harder enough fighting off the crowds of women as it is
