Did you ever get the slipper at home?

How times change! Was all the rage in the 70/80s, with Beano characters being whacked on a weekly basis. My OH got it at school and my mum kept a slipper just for smacking (yes, social services have been informed!). I know it was used in schools, but did anyone get it at home?

Mum smacked me and my sister on the bottom or legs, if we were really naughty with the back of a big hairbrush. That really stung! Got the belt lots of times at school (it was Scotland) much more than my goody sister. Hated having to hold my hands out in front and watch the belt hitting them. The thick heavy ones were horrible and my hands swelled up. Also got it on the legs and that was worse as everyone could see the marks!

Jenny when were you at school? thats sounds horrible.

austinsmam · 19/09/2009 15:14

Thankfully attitudes have changed in our lifetimes, to make this sort of behaviour unacceptable.

you are so right there Austinsmam

I started school in 1970 and left in 1983. It was normal for children to get the belt back then and girls got it as much as boys. I got it the first time when I was seven. I think schools were stricter in Scotland. We used to get it for getting sums and spelling wrong but for me mainly for talking when we were supposed to be quiet!

SarahLondon1 · 21/09/2009 16:05

Jenny, were they still giving the belt in 1983? At what age did you last get the belt?

Jenny1321 · 22/09/2009 14:20

They were definitely still using the belt when I left school although it wasn't used in the 6th form. I think it was stopped not long after I finished school. I got it right through school until I was 16. It depended more on the teacher than your age. Our P7 teacher used it a lot (age 11/12). She used to do it on the backs of our legs sometimes, which I hated. One of my teachers in S2 seemed to take a dislike to me and belted me quite frequently. For us it was a normal part of schooling and my mum didn't object at all.

Back then getting trouble at school, would land you in further trouble at home

Teachers back then could be brutal

austinsmam · 30/09/2009 20:59

PE teachers were always the worst.

Agreed that teachers back then could be very brutal, and get off on it

As the weather was so bad today, i invited a
lady from down our street to come over with her 2 DCs. She is quite religious and regular church goer. Her DCs are always pretty quiet aand far more well behaved than mine. Anyway we got chatting, and she told me ,that they normally do as they are told (as mine are a real handful) and if they do misbehave " i get the slipper out" Is it not illegal these days?

sorebottom · 30/03/2012 22:05

what started me to run away, i was only 4 yrs old, sometimes found 2 miles away, it started with a wooden spoon on the legs, a cane would be kept in the kitchen cupboard, i had 1 younger brother of 1 yr another followed 5 yrs later, I used to get the cane weekly, mum was this chubby smiling friendly outgoing person that everyone loved, i loved her but not when i got the cane, soon the cane was replaced with a triangular hardwood stair rod i have memories that if i got under the kitchen chairs the legs and frame would take the brunt of the whacking,so i must have been small i can remember curling up as tight as i could and then the stair rod broke, so i ran away, when i was 7 or 8 i marked easily the school told me parents abut the marks on me, they were urged to take me to doctors turned out i had less layers of skin and thats why i marked so the beating stopped and the mental abuse continued till i left home at 17 , i can't work out why just me ! and not my other brothers
i was like my mum who blamed me for everything , I'm now 53 happy and accomplished, never smack a child , full stop

My mother frequently used her slipper on me (60's child here). She was particularly adept, and I was well behaved when she was wearing them. She wore those full collar ones with the rubber sole....hurt like hell
