How many people do YOU know who use reusable nappies?

Apart from ourselves I know of 3 other people in person who use reusable nappies at least some of the time. Was just interested as I wonder if they are becoming more popular, there seems to be loads of people on the net who use them. I know of a few others who intended using them but then didn't for whatever reason. Hopefully the amount of people now using them is making a difference to the amount of nappies that go to landfill.

none of my friends use them and they all think im a bit for using them

doesnt help DH agrees with them and they have conversations when i am changing DC about how "hippy" they are.

i dont care tho, im doing my bit and saving my baby from all those nasty chemicals.

Flamesparrow · 11/04/2009 15:43

3 including me.

VoodooWithBellsOn · 11/04/2009 15:44

none..
my sister ordered them but they never arrived and so she just used disposables like everyone else I know.

3 as well including me...and those other 2 I badgered into it - I got 2 other people to try as well but they gave up.

Lots of people do think we are quite mad though.

Alishanty · 11/04/2009 15:50

lol. I get comments like 'you're good' etc etc. No I'm just stingy as I have 2 in nappies and they save me money!

5 including me (I've met others but don't actually 'know' them)

TheNatty · 11/04/2009 15:53

Alishanty same here! they make out like its a huge deal to put a washing machine on and hang them out. i REALLY dont find them to be a pain, sometimes a terrible explosive poo is tricky, but hey its not that bad!

giantkatestacks · 11/04/2009 15:56

I know - its not like the washing machine isnt on everyday as it is...

duchesse · 11/04/2009 15:57

I used to know loads 12/13 years ago but don't have a baby at the moment, so only one right now. Although I do know a number more who use disposables.

Shambolic · 11/04/2009 16:05

None.

Alishanty · 11/04/2009 16:09

duchesse, yes I suppose they have become less popular, when I was a baby 29 yrs ago, we all were in cloth!

I actually know 7 including me, but most of them (including me ) use disposables at night...

EldonAve · 11/04/2009 16:15

2, not counting people I met via MN

2, and I don't. I have lots of excuses (dreadful labour, struggled physically and emotionally post-birth, lived in damp cold houses that weren't ours with no tumble drier). But that doesn't magic the nappies I've used out of landfill, does it?

I'm the only one I know locally among loads of mothers, although now babies are getting to 6 months some are thinking about it.

SIL1 and SIL2 are using them (and gave me hand-me-downs which is why I started), and quite a few friends, but we're a bit non-mainstream in many ways (except SIL1, who was only for saving money!)

I think I've converted a couple people just by showing them the adorable wraps you can buy.

But A has started needing changing at night - if a disposable avoided that I'd be all for it. Except that whenever he's worn one he's got nappy rash and they get soggy quicker anyway.

30-odd years ago disposables had just reached Surrey and were my mum's one luxury. Given we didn't have a washing machine for another 10 years I'm not surprised!

frogwatcher · 11/04/2009 17:06

Riven - dont feel guilt. There are quite a few reports that now say there is little, if any, environmental benefit to re-usables once water use, drier use, washing chemicals, liners etc taken into consideration - particularly if your local authority is moving away from landfill. I am no expert but know an environmental campaigner who reliable tells me the benefits are doubtful. But they are cheaper, especially on second, third or fourth use!!!!

4 (and us makes 5).

I do see other mothers using them at toddler groups and things though.

lisad123 · 11/04/2009 17:15

between me and sgk we know 7

kickassangel · 11/04/2009 17:17

there isn't much difference for just one child, but it adds up massively when you look at 2nd, 3rd etc, both environmentally & economically.

dd is 5, at the time she was in nappies, 2 out of 10 from our ante-natal course used them. LOADS of my other friends used them. i would say about 20 - 30 % of anyone i knew with a baby during the time dd was in nappies.
i also thought they smelt less, unless you take disposables outside immediately, they get really smelly & i hated them.

EldonAve · 11/04/2009 17:54

actually thinking some more I know 4 people
