Beyond wiped out....

My wife gave birth to our first son one week ago today... she was discharged from the hospital and then readmitted for a kidney infection... she has been at home 2 days now.

She is utterly wiped out. She has stiff, crampy legs, a constant headache and feels lethargic and nauseous...

Has anyone heard of this kind of reaction before?

How are her iron levels? Spatone (liquid sachet, can get from Tesco) are great in orange juice. I was awful after my births due to low iron (blood loss)

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 04/04/2009 19:13

I'd get the out of hours out to check her over. Does she have a fever?

digitalgirl · 04/04/2009 19:14

Is she still under care of the local midwife team? If so, call them and ask them. If not call the GP, just to check it's not related to the kidney infection.

I really would call them out, this needs ruling out.

LackaDAISYcal · 04/04/2009 19:18

I think she should either get back in touch with the hospital or else call the out of hours doctor and see if she can be seen this weekend.

Without wanting to worry you overly much all of those symptoms can be attributed to a major infection. Is it possible the kidney infection is still affecting her or that it has worsened? Is she taking antibiotics for it?

I had a wound infection after a surgical procedure and had pretty much all those symptoms; it felt like a really bad flu.

LackaDAISYcal · 04/04/2009 19:19

Or perhaps there is some placental tissue remaining which is causing infection? How is her loss (if that isn't too embarrasing a thing to have to report)

LadyOfScoffleTheEasterEggs · 04/04/2009 19:25

Gosh, yeah, I had a post birth infection. The MWs (who don't do home visits short notice/weekends/bank holidays (gave birth Thurs, no MW until Tues)) didn't do anything when I rung them about how ill I was - I went to the hospital I gave birth and was on a drip and antibiotics within an hour - my son too. Check her temp & for fluey symtoms. And go with your gut, don't be fobbed off on the phone if you're worried.

duchesse · 04/04/2009 19:45

You need to call the delivery suite or midwife team and ask for someone to come and see her. Also it might be wise to have her seen by the GP asap (this evening? otherwise take her back to hospital to have her seen). This is not a normal reaction to childbirth, it sounds like some kind of infection that needs treating as quickly as possible.

LackaDAISYcal · 05/04/2009 07:01

How is she today noahsdad?

lovely name for your new bub by the way

naomi83 · 05/04/2009 09:55

it might be another post-birth infection, it could also be pure knackeredness from dealing with a newborn, and body fighting the kidney infection. I think buy her vitimin tables with high iron levels, make sure she's eating three healthy meals and drinking at least 2litres of water a day. Also, can you give the baby a feed once or twice a day, either EBM or formula so she can get some sleep? If not, can you get a friend in to help out or hire a cleaner so she can rest and recuperate? You might find flowers, a hot bath with lavender oil in, and a very early night are all she needs.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad, thank you so much for posting that link.

Mrs NoahsDad's symptoms - along with many others on this thread - are classic possible childbed fever.

I really hope it's not, and hope to hear back v soon that all is well with Mrs ND.

It's the first thing I thought, I remembered it from your thread a while back so it's down to your campaign.

Hope your wife's OK and is getting some treatment Mrs NoahsDad.

duchesse · 05/04/2009 16:21

Have to say, me too, but didn't want to spell it out to Noahsdad. I remember reading an article in one of the papers about your wife, Dadtotwo, and am very sorry for your loss.

Noahs dad. We're going to keep writing on this as we are concerned. If you could let us know how things are it would put our minds at ease.

IIRC, your partners MN name is mummytonoah?
