my dd is 13 months and although she is standing on the sofa nd in her cot she does not want to stand on the floor or walk at all. my usual thoughts on this subject is that she will walk when she is ready but my mil is constantly bringing it up to the point that she is informing me of every other baby that she knows walking age.

mine were eary for all milestones until walking, for some reason that's where they both had difficulty

dd was 14.5 months and ds1 was a week after his first birthday

dd was a great crawler and tbh i don't think she saw the point of walking til she was playing with a little boy one day who was running around and she got cross that she couldn't follow him... the next day she walked and she was running within the week

ds1 never got the hang of crawling at all really but was still jut over the year learning to walk.... that was a frustrating few months while he was imobile but wanting to be following dd!

Gorionine · 10/03/2009 10:48

No worries. So far I had Goreonline, Gorleone ( rather enjoyed that one! and goreoline!

missblythe · 10/03/2009 10:52

16 months.

I didn't walk until I was 18 months, but seem to have no trouble getting about now

Haven't read all the posts as I'm nearly out of time on here, but you don't need to worry. My DD's were both 15 months when they walked.

We found they skipped the "toddler staggering about and falling down" stage and went straight to walking pretty solidly.

MsBrandybuck · 10/03/2009 10:55

DS was 16 months. He just loved crawling and was very good at it. I was told that crawling strengthens back muscles so not a bad thing if they do it for longer. In the end we got DS walking by chucking a ball between us over his head

pud1 · 10/03/2009 11:47

thanks all. i am currently 20 wekks pg and was hoping to get away with not buying double buggy. think this is why walking is such a topic of conversation in the family.
might print this thread for mil. save her carrying out a poll with every one she meets

Even if he was walking, I'd be amazed if you got away without a buggy!

PinkTulips · 10/03/2009 14:12

pud... dd was 18 months when ds1 was born and only walked at 14.5 months.

i've never had a double buggy and only had ds1 in a sling for a few months as he was massive and i couldn't carry him for long.

from 21/22 months dd has rarely ever sat in the buggy and has alway been a really tough little walker.

ds1 by contrast who walked sooner is much lazier and at 2.5 still hates walking and drags so badly i still need to bring the buggy to collect dd from playschool! am refusing to buy a double though, hate them and they're not practical around here anyway so am slinging ds2 and have a seat2go as well so he an go in he buggy and ds1 can be lazy

Divineintervention · 10/03/2009 14:15

DS1 16 mths
DS2 19 mths
DD1 20 mths
DS3 God knows about 3 years!! (he's 4 mths!!)

ben5 · 10/03/2009 14:20

ds1 11 months
ds2 nearly 14 months
looking back it was so much easier then!! now i'm having trouble keeping up!!! i wouldn't even start to get worried till they are at least 18 months

hazeyjane · 10/03/2009 14:20

dd1 walked at 16 months
dd2 at 21 months (she was investigated at 18 months, as didn't like to take weight on her feet, which turned out badly)

My dd1 was 14 months old when i had dd2, so couldn't have done without a double. I have to say, that we still rely on a double even though she is nearly 3, but we do walk a lot (and carrying dd2 in a sling nearly killed me!).

Bubbaluv · 10/03/2009 14:23

I think you should tell your MIL to sit down with your DD and explain how dissapointed she is in her progress.
At least ask her why she keeps bringing it up - there's no point letting her just go on and on and on. Your DD may not walk for many months yet, so best to deal with MIL's obsession now IMO.
If you sound informed and relaxed then you may be able to get your MIL to chill or at least bother someone else with her concerns.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 10/03/2009 14:24

dd1 aout 9 months.
dd2 14 months.

Madsometimes · 10/03/2009 14:44

dd1 - 18 months
dd2 - 19 months

My children were rather late, but I know lots of children who were not walking until about 16 months. My children were avid crawlers, so they felt no need to walk. They were far slower and clumsier on 2 legs than on all fours. My children also concentrated on improving their speech before they walked. Early walkers tend to learn to speak after they learn to walk, but my children and other late walkers I know did it the other way around. They were crawling around at the same time as chatting away.

Latchley · 10/03/2009 19:05

My ds was 16 months before he walked. When he eventually did he was at the same level as other kids that age - he just seemed to have missed out the preliminary, falling down stage!

UmSami · 10/03/2009 19:40

My ds walked at 9.5 months so thankfully MIL was ok with that...all of hers didnt walk until after 12 months...
HOWEVER ds nearly 3 has only just potty trained, he objected for a long time...apparantly my DH and his bro and sis were all potty trained by 1 year as were his cousins...
But wait a minute they walked after 1...she was a very talented mother to potty train her none walking babies!
MIL's are to be smiled at and child raising comments promptly disregarded.
Don't worry!

My ds was about 13/14 mths so not 'early' at all. On the other hand, his speech is very good at 2 1/2 so they all gain skills at different rates. Also now my ds walks better and for longer than some who walked at a younger age so it doesn't mean anything.

usernametaken · 10/03/2009 21:55

DD was taking steps at 8months, by 9months she was walking instead of crawling.
She was a lazy bones though and would have sat in the buggy at every opportunity even up to age 3 (we stopped using it at 2y9ms). I think you'll need a double buggy for when #2 arrives as their stamina is still not very good.

youhavegottobekidding · 10/03/2009 21:59

DD1 was 13 months DD2 was 22 months!!!! I read somewhere that if they don't walk early they are excellent speakers and vice versa - something to do with the brain concentrating on the one thing. personal experience shows that this could be true - mention this to anyone who comments!

MinnieMummy · 10/03/2009 22:03

DS 16mths. Friend's DD also 16mths.

I have a 20-month gap between DCs and need my phil and teds... DS can walk fine now (2.4) but he can be soooo slow!! And on occasion he is lazy and just likes to be pushed

elvislives · 10/03/2009 22:21

Mine were 10 mo, 11 mo, 10 mo, 13 mo and 14 mo.

Eve4Walle · 11/03/2009 08:43

DD - 9 months (and I'm not joking - it was complete nightmare)

DS - well, he's 13 months now, and he can stand on his own, cruise around furniture and I've seen him walk, but the truth is, he's just too lazy to actually do it full time and gets where he wants to go much quicker by crawling. I thought he's be a fast walker like DD as he was crawling early, but heigh-ho, he'll do it when he's ready I suppose!

becka1 · 11/03/2009 08:48

My DD is 20 months.....she has never crawled and no signs of walking yet! Does shuffle on her bum. I'm beginning to get concerned. Brilliant talker though.

HeadFairy · 11/03/2009 08:52

ds was 10 months old. To be honest, it's been quite hard work, he's really physical and in to absolutely everything. His latest party trick is climbing up on to the kitchen table and jumping on to the floor, this is despite not actually knowing how to jump so it's more like a fall. I'd have relished a few more months of not having to constantly chase after him.
