We arrive Easter Friday and plan to do the railway museum on the Sat. So what can we do on the Friday - I think the Yorvick will be too grown up our DS is 4. Ohh and the Sunday after weve left

Tea at Betty's is a great experience, if a little pricey. There's plenty of sightseeing around the city too - quaint shops in The Shambles, and the Minster of course. You could perhaps do a river cruise or do a ghost walk? Hmm, trying to think what else. York is great for just wandering around though

CaliforniaBrit · 02/03/2009 09:56

Oh there's also Castle Howard and Sledmere if you like stately homes. And in the city, the Merchant Adventurers hall is quite interesting. Flamingoland is nearby but I woudn't recommend it!

CaliforniaBrit · 02/03/2009 09:59

The Treasurers house by the Minster is ok too. It has a nice tea room and a ghost tour in the cellar - my girls were a bit too scared but a brave ds might enjoy it!

We went last year and the children enjoyed the Castle Museum,my son was 4 at the time.We also did a boat trip and an open top bus tour which were good, think we bought a combined ticket.

fryalot · 02/03/2009 10:51

they usually have loads of stuff over Easter weekend, so you probably won't have too much difficulty finding something to do just by wandering.

I don't think the Yorvik will be particularly old for your ds, they seem to have things for all ages. There is likely to be quite a queue though.

If you do go to Sledmere, don't go on the Saturday - it's not open on Saturdays.

Castle museum is wonderful, wander along the city walls, visit DIG! (young archealogy place)
Also York Art gallery is free and often has children's craft activitys.
What about
The Museum Gardens are nice this time of year to run around in AND there are a million very friendly squirrels to run after!

Do you hasve transport? There's a marvellous soft play place with an outdoor area called Creepy Crawleys on the outskirts of York (google it)
Of if you like designer shopping places, McArther Glen also has a wonderful coverewd outdoor play area.

There is also a great leisure pool near Clifton Moor (with park-and-ride scheme from city centre)

dontdillydally · 03/03/2009 07:50

creepy crawlies looks fabulous - go here on way home I think.

Is it a day out or a few hours. IS it outdoors or just indoors

mollyroger · 03/03/2009 09:37

it is outdoors and indoors. gets very busy at times though.
Its more of a 2-hour place than an all-day one. And i think it is time limited at peak times.

CarmenSanDiego · 03/03/2009 09:40

Oooh, I second mollyroger's ideas. My daughter went on DIG! as a school trip and raved about it.

McArthur Glen is fun for the viking ship decor too! You can sit in another viking ship in the middle of the food court to eat your McDonalds which is... unusual

Only been to Creepy Crawlies to drop my kids off at a party once. Scared the hell out of me ;)

CarmenSanDiego · 03/03/2009 09:41

Oh, I'm CaliforniaBrit by the way. Namechanged.

bellavita · 03/03/2009 10:35

dontdillydally yesterday, whilst waiting for the park and ride bus I picked up a little booklet (I live in York) - it is a mini guide, attractions, shopping, eating and drinking.

Would you like me to send you it?

All of the above, but I WOULD recommend Flamoingoland very highly, unlike someone else on here. Face it, everywhere is going to be packed out this weekend. And I personally prefer packed out OUTDOOR places to INDOOR.
It's a bit pricey, but once you get in you get to see the wide variety of animals and also get on all the rides free. It's wonderful for children - and adults too!

frankbestfriend · 03/03/2009 14:37

The York Dungeons (quite scary but v exciting)

Castle Museum

Art Gallery

Jorvik centre

Yorkshire Wheel

Take a boat alomg the Ouse

Waterworld swimming centre near Monks Cross has huge slides and a lazy river

mollyroger · 03/03/2009 17:36

having just visited york dungeons, I'd say too scary for a 4-yr-old actually. (I went with my 11-yr-old and tbh, was more distressing listening to upset young children than the displays )

we love flamingoland - especially out of high season! Not sure whether it's worth the money for 2 adults to pay to watch a 4-yr-old go on around 5 rides though. If I was going with young child - I'd take an extra adult so we could go on the rides

dontdillydally · 03/03/2009 17:36

Many thanks for your suggestions. I think IVe got my plan...so much to do but so little time!!! We will do

Fri - Arrive late morning - Castle Museum and boat ride, plus Dig It if we get time
Sat - Railway, Yorkshire Wheel and Dig It if we dont get time on Fri

Sunday - on way home after breakfast stop off at Creepy Crawlies

mollyroger - do you live in York?

mollyroger · 03/03/2009 18:04

bellavita no, but I know it very well.

Dontdillydally really sorry to rain on your parade, but I don't think Yorkshire Wheel is there any more... (Unless a local can correct me?)

Be sure to book for DIG!in school holidays it can be almost impossible to get in....

bellavita · 03/03/2009 18:09

I am sure the Yorkshire Wheel is still there, it is in this guide booklet I have for 2008/09 and I am pretty sure last time we went in for something to eat one evening, the boys commented on it and this was only a couple of weeks ago.

bellavita · 03/03/2009 18:10

Do you know it very well because you visit a lot, or are you near to York? Sorry, am just being nosy..

DegreesMinutesSecondsIsMale · 03/03/2009 18:17

I could have sworn the wheel had gone. I'm travelling through York on Friday, so I'l check.

bellavita · 03/03/2009 18:20

no, you are right, DH has just looked, it closed - sorry for the duff info

You could go to the air museum

CarmenSanDiego · 03/03/2009 19:38

Have a lovely time DDD

mawbroon · 03/03/2009 20:00

We were in York a few weeks ago. How into trains is your DS? Mine loves them and we went twice to the railway museum because he loved it so much! There is a kids interactive type thing right round the back. Make sure you go there.

DegreesMinutesSecondsIsMale · 03/03/2009 20:40

The air museam - bit out of the way, but fantastic! I'd advise taking a picnic - when we were theree, they'd run out of food at the NAAFI.

Me and LOML liked the social histroy aspect - room recreations, letters, notes, momentoes etc. The kids liked the big bombs.

dontdillydally · 03/03/2009 20:52

Thanks for the offer Bellavita but I have lots of info!!!!

Mawbroon - he's train mad, I havent told him about the railway museum yet as he'd want to go now - plus I believe there is a road train that takes you there???

YEs I will book for DIG IT - how long should I allow for this?
