Battles with their toddler over having the telly on. Anyone have the same problem?

Well, it's not telly, it's DVDs I'm talking about.
DS is 22 months old and would watch dvds - and telly too, all day if we let him.
It goes on in the morning while I get housework done, get showered etc, but then I like to switch if off. And there's a tantrum. Sometimes he even puts it back on. ( He can put dvds on himself! )
Do any of you have this problem?
DS already spends far too much time staring at the telly, I don't want him to spend any more. He watches it until mid-morning and then early evening when I'm making dinner but I think it's too much.
Not sure what to do. Or should I ease off and pick my battles??!

I never have it on as background noise. My DSs have always known that I could happily do without it and so were unlikely to tantrum in case we became a TV free house!

ours is on all day (until DS's are in bed) they occasionally sit down and watch something if it's a programme they like, otherwise it's just low background noise (volume is turned down very low when it's not one of their favourite programmes).

Do you want to come and move my 7yr old dead weight TV (takes 2 men to carry it........) out of the room (to somewhere that the DS's can't actually get hold of it) and then put it back a few days later???? No - I didn't think so...........

either kids TV, or digital radio, or sport (Eurosport always harmless), or some "living" type channel with relocation, changing rooms and DIY SOS repeats ad naseaum (which of course I never have a sneaky watch of out of the corner of my eye )

mangled bodies and swear fests in Midsummer Murders - blimey that must have changed since I last saw it - was all tamer than the Tweenies having a fight last time I saw it

DS is nearly three. He is in nursery three days a week and on the two days I'm at home with him, he has the TV on in the morning while I'm getting ready, again at lunch time and then at wind down time before bed...

Is it too much - probably...BUT I also do a number of other activities with him, days out etc and I often sit down with him and we watch the programmes together and chat about what's going on. He has an extensive vocabulary, he's bright, outgoing and has excellent memory/recall skills.

Its only a problem if you make it one!

Parenting is hard enough without beating ourselves up over a bit of TV - its not like years ago where children could safely play in the garden/streets when the mums pottered around!

I do 'police it'to the extent that I dont like ds watching the nspcc adverts I found them upsetting when I was younger and they just seem to get worse.......

So if I am out of the room it gets left on a fairly bland channel, but to be honest my two are like little shadows so I don't really have to worry!

I think you have to accept he will tantrum and gradually he'll grow out of it.

DS has always been more of a sulker and we used to have to turn the DVD off well before dinner was ready so he had time for his sulk before he came to sit at the table. They do grow out of it.

Our DVD player is on a shelf above the TV and out of reach so they always have to ask me to put it on.
