Sleeping on a different floor from toddler?

Hello,

We are thinking of moving older DD when she is just over 3 to a room on a different floor from us and younger DS from our room into her room on our floor.

DH is keen that this will work, I feel okay about it but worry DD will feel alone?

Anyone else sleep on different floors from the DC or is it a big no no??

Thanks!

We've just done this too as new baby expected in 10 weeks. DS who is 3 1/2 has just gone up a floor. i worried about him feeling lonely up there but he seems fine. We leave the light on on the stairs so if he wants to come down to us, he can do so safely. He's been down a few times but doesn't appear that its because he feels lonely. We let him pick the colour for the walls and new bed linen and was very excited by his new big boy room so maybe do something like that for your DD so she feels part of the move.

I've slept on a different floor from DD since she was about 6 months old! We still have the monitor on and she is 2.3, we have lots of mains plugged in smoke alarms in the house. She just shouts in the morning "mummy/daddy where are you" and down we trot, well once she gets a bit loud .

We moved DS to his own room on the floor below us - and the opposite side of the house to our room - when he was 5 weeks old. We had (and still have) a really good baby monitor with a video screen.

It worked really well; even though he's now 3 we still use the monitor as he can't be heard otherwise!

a tip i read on here was to put a smoke alarm in the loft

ilovemydogandMrObama · 19/02/2009 20:10

Me and DS sleep in the loft conversion, and DD sleeps downstairs.

She has a big room, so it makes sense for her to have that room. There's a monitor so I hear her. She has this idea that it's telepathy

We sleep on the floor above out two DD's. So I guess they are not "alone," but they are fine. I still use a monitor for DD1 (3) which I prob wouldn't do if she was on the same floor as us. She always comes up to us when she wakes in the morning. DD2 is only 9 months so doesn't know much about it.

We have a plug-in light on the landing which is movement-activated, so she can see where she is going and get upstairs safely. It wasn't expensive and saves the electric!

snap iwantitnow, identical aged dd who has also slept on different - top - floor since six months old. Still use monitor when we're downstairs or in the basement but that is three floors down, otherwise I hear her penetrating cries of 'mummy, mummy, i want mummy' in the morning And of course let dp get up to deal with it.
Dumb question maybe, but why do you all have more than one smoke alarm, and why in the loft? What can happen?

Fire is a silent killer. Our smoke alarms never went off because the fire had started in the loft, a trapped wire between the rafters. It was only by pure chance that I was home and it was not the babysitter because she would not have realised that something was wrong, she would have thought a power cut as the fuses all blew.

No way would I leave a young child alone at home at night - EVER.

We were out of our home for over 6 months whilst they rebuilt our house.

If I had not been there and got the children out before the first floor ceiling collapsed, my children would have been dead or seriously burnt. All the bedrooms were completely destroyed, the roof, the loft. Need I say more. hmm

Just to clarify. The reason the smoke alarms did not go off was because the fire was ABOVE them.

Now we have a remote control system, thanks to the Fire Brigade, which puts an alarm in the loft and the garage as well and they are all interlinked, so if one goes off, they all go off.

They cannot go off if the fire is above them.

How many Mumsnetters have fire alarms in their lofts???? Food for thought ladies.

Did the Fire Brigade give you that system....like for free....?

dunno - its cut and pasted from a thread last year...

Ah sorry, I thought that bit was from you

My 3yr old ds' room is the attic room. We still use a monitor and have a smoke alarm outside his door. He loves his big boy room. I'm expecting dc2 in july and if it's a boy they will share as it's the biggest room in the house (and we'll get to keep our junk room )
