Ds is 2.3 and yesterday morning we said he didn't want to wear nappies anymore. He has had plenty of signs of being ready for a while it was just there was always something going on which meant I wasn't ready to dedicate anytime to it. Anyway yesterday decided to just ditch the nappy and see what happened. Well he was a little super star! almost 100% success rate. Today however he has peed on the floor 3 times already. I know this is expected, just feel a little dispondant as he did so well yesterday. Any words of wisdom or encouragement. Do i offer rewards or just loads of praise? And any top tips for getting out and about? Did school run in pants yesterday and this morning but that is only a 5 min walk from home. Got toddler group tomorrow....

ooooh let us hold each other's hand through this I am on day 2 too.

like you yesterday we had a 100% success rate and ahve a couple of accidents today and 1 wee in the potty.

no poos yet though

I am giving him a sticker and big cuddle after each success

I am staying in the house today and tomorrow at least

AliceTheCamelHasGotTheHump · 29/01/2009 10:38

If he's always worn a nappy then he needs to pee on the floor to connect the fact that bladder feeling + inaction = wet legs. He doesn't know that yet.

Lostinnappies- Hi, how old is your ds? We have been giving lodas of praise and cuddles, ring daddy at work stuff like that. Thought about stickers today, I'm sure I've got some. Don't really want to start giving sweets.

Alicethecamel-what you are saying makes perfect sense. Luckily we don't have carpet downstairs so it's not too much fuss to mop up!

ds is 2 1/2

lostinnappies · 29/01/2009 10:48

we have hard floors downstairs too - i would be a nervous wreck if it was all carpetted

lostinnappies · 29/01/2009 10:49

would really like him to do a poo in the potty

  • we are having probs with his pooing atm and the hv recommended potty training might help.

I'm on day 3 with ds. Quite a few accidents and any successes have been cause I've put him on the potty (he only asks for it after the event). Took him to toddler group yesterday and had an accident right at the end. I just make sure I have spare tracksuit bottoms and underpants, kitchen roll and a palstic bag.
The problem I'm finding is that he's getting fed up with me constantly asking him if he'll sit on the potty! I encouage him to sit on it every half hour and it's driving him mad. I think my constant nagging will have a negative effect in the end! I try to make it exciting by getting him to chose a book to read on the potty etc but the only time he'll sit on it for any length of time is in front of the T.V, and then he'd sit there all day!
We're rewarding him with pennies that he puts in his piggy bank and tell him when he gets enough he can buy a scooter. Although I think he's bored with this too so we're putting a star chart togethter today, that way his progress is visable.

misscackle · 29/01/2009 11:18

Poo was the one accident he did have yesterday. he did know he needed to go and kept going to potty to try but then couldn't go and didn't have the patience to sit for more than 20 seconds. When it did finaly come he didn't get there in time. He quite ofen goes a couple of days without doing a poo so less chances to practice that one iyswim.

ds just casualy walked up to potty did a wee and walked off

luckywinner · 29/01/2009 11:24

You can do it! The first few days are the hardest and sometimes it helos to lower your expectations. I am about to start my dd who is same age and tells me each time she wees and poos and insists I change her straight away. but I made such a hash of doing ds that I feel like I have no clue what I am doing! And we have carpets everywhere. V of wooden floors.

Good luck.

misscackle · 29/01/2009 11:25

billyog- I made the mistake with my eldest ds of constantly asking him if he needed to go and getting him to sit and try every 15 mins or so. With him it had a negative effect, I think he go so sick of me going on at him! He also didn't have to think for himself so wasn't learning when he needed to go. kitchen towel and plastic bag, great tip i would have forgotten that and ended up using half the toddler group paper towels. at least at toddler group people are used to it and are understanding.

Ds is alseep now. I slipped a nappy under his bum once he had dropped off just in case. Had 2 more accidents and nothing in the potty today Never mind, we shall keep going. I thought yesterday was too good to be true!

poo in potty HOOOORRRRAAAAAAAHHHHH

all wees in potty apart from 2 accidents this morning.

HSMM · 29/01/2009 16:52

I find more than one potty helps, so they don't have to go too far if they leave it til the last minute (and then you'll have a spare for the car as well).

misscackle · 29/01/2009 17:25

yay at poo in the potty! Sounds like you have had a successful day.

right day 3

still peeing in potty - wandering up to it and getting on with it - he is not telling me though and he is not wearing any pants yet

misscackle · 30/01/2009 13:05

Well we have been to toddlers this morning. Have had 2 accidents and 2 wees in potty so far today. We are wearing pants and trousers most of the time which means lots of washing!!

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 30/01/2009 18:26

it generally takes a few days/week for brain to register the need to have a wee and for clothes to be wet before they reliese they need to go

carry on, prise and bribe ( if you want) we did a smartie/milky button each time did a wee on potty/toilet

misscackle · 30/01/2009 19:20

Have discovered ds prefers the training seat on the toilet but will use potty too. Did a poo on the toilet this evening! had a much better day today. Going to buy loads of cheap pants and jogging bottoms tomorrow and keep at it.

OP posts:
lostinnappies · 30/01/2009 19:39

hoorraaahhh misscackle

no poo today but lots of wees

swampster · 30/01/2009 23:45

I think undies/training pants can confuse the issue - since DS2 has been in trackie bums with no pants, we haven't had any accidents. First poo on the potty today!

lostinnappies · 31/01/2009 18:59

still lots of wees

he is having trouble getting to grips with wearing cothes though

he is fine at using the potty when he has nothing on his bottom half but when he is wearing something he just goes ahead and wees.

????

misscackle · 31/01/2009 20:56

My ds is not keen on running around with nothing on. Had an ok day today, plenty of wees in potty. Got to go and watch eldest ds play football tomorrow so little ds will have to be really wrapped up warm as going to be freezing I think. Dh thinks we should put a nappy on him as there would be no way of stripping him off in time. I'm not keen on confusing him by putting a nappy on. Going to take potty and get him to wee just before and thinking unless he has drank loads he will be be able to go an hour before needing to go again. What do you think?
