When do we go dry at night?

DS 2.5 about to start potty training. Some friends have said that their children went dry day and night all at the same time - how likely is this? Could be a problem as DS has 8oz milk at bedtime and takes water to bed - need to know when and how to restrict this fluid intake - or else I guess I will be dealing with a pile of laundry. Advice please.......

Bumping for you.

Hi,

DS was dry during the day by 2.4 and we found it pretty easy. He is now 3.10 (4 in March) and still not completely dry at night.

We have tried on and off for the last 12 months. The last pull up was used New Years Eve and although I really don't want to do it, I have been waking him around midnight and taking him to the toilet. So far he has had 3 wet nights. I did try to explain that this is his big year as he will soon be 4 and starting 'big' school in September, so needs to be a big boy now. There is a little reward coming once he has been dry for 7 consecutive nights....it has been there for the last 12 months though and never quite made it out

DD(7) was dry during the day at around 2.6 and dry at night by 3 yrs. She has never wet the bed.

People keep telling me boys are slower and a few can still be wetting the bed at 7 or 8

Every child is different and I have learned that this is something you cannot force on them.

HTH

My DS is 4.3 and I still put him in a pull-up at night. Mostly it's dry in the mornings but every time I have suggested doing without it he has been enthusiastic and then wet the bed on the second night. I am now aiming for 14v consecutive dry nights before doing without it again.

dd1- dry day and night at 2.4 Easy peasy

ds- dry in day at 2.6 ish. Took night nappies away on 4th birthday but had several wet nights before fully dry

dd2- dry in day as above but still regularly wetting nappy in the night.

This time though, I am calmer about it. With ds, I worried because dd1 had been my only previous experience and was so straightforward. Now I know there are no rules.

DD2 (2.6) was potty trained from September during the day. After a few weeks I noticed that her nappy was dry in the morning so I have just stopped putting a nappy on her for bed and we've not had any accidents so far, and it's been a while now.

I hope I haven't just jinxed it now.

JeanieG · 10/01/2009 01:04

I seem to remember the other 2DC's not being as straightforward though.

That sounds more like it - I didnt think it was always day and night at the same time - gives me chance to reduce the evening milk! Thanks everyone

Don't worry about it. DD was dry by age 3 or so. DS not until 6! Don't force the issue!

It is not about restricting fluids rather getting him / her to recognise the feeling of needing to go to the loo when asleep and not letting it out.

mum23monkeys · 10/01/2009 20:51

ds1 - dry day and night at 2.0
ds2 - dry in day at 2.0 as well, but only dry at night at 4.4
dd - dry in day 1.11 and haven't tried nights yet. She's only been dry a week!

So, no rules, it depends on the child.
We lifted ds2 from about 4.0 when we went to bed, which I know is contraversial, but he did make progress after that, but he may just have been ready anyway. Who knows.

jingsjosie · 10/01/2009 20:59

DD was dry in day 2.6, at night about a month later.
The occasional wet bed now, can't establish a pattern to it. Dry for weeks on the trot though.

CarGirl · 10/01/2009 21:00

my dd2 is not dry at 6.5, the other 3 were all dry before 3.

bodiddly · 10/01/2009 21:03

hi Cargirl ...

ds is 3.11 and I have been wondering about trying to get him dry at night. He has been dry during the day for at least a year ... maybe a year and a half now. He pretty much always has a full nappy in the morning when we get him up - does that mean he isn't ready?

CarGirl · 10/01/2009 21:07

Hia bo!

Probably not, unless he wakes up in the morning and then wees in his nappy. We just waited until we had dry nappies or voices shouting "I need a wee" in the mornings!

bodiddly · 10/01/2009 21:09

We have had a couple of dry ones and when we spoke about it he said he can't hold it. I told him to get up and go to the loo but he would no doubt then not go back to bed!

How is dd enjoying school?

sorry for the hijack by the way!

CarGirl · 10/01/2009 21:11

She loves it and is going back as early as poss to bag the bed that she wants! It's all small rooms now upstairs, 4 is the max.

bodiddly · 10/01/2009 21:13

that is fantastic .. and how are you coping? I knew she would settle in well!

First 3 weeks were hell for me - beyond my imagination really, by the last 3 weeks of term I don't think I got a text or an email........

She's pretty much an open book will tell everyone how she feels, so no hiding when she's not okay which I think has stood her in good stead. Latest bill was interesting, broken window (indoor hockey practice!), blue magaizine, replacement key fob, drum lessons.......

My ds has milk and bed time and takes water to bed .. maybe that is why he is still wet at night but something seems a little cruel about restricting fluid intake. I know I wouldn't like being told I couldn't have a drink if I were thirsty!

CarGirl · 10/01/2009 21:18

Usually it's best to try and up their fluid intake during the day as it encourages the production of the hormone that concentrates the urine overnight.

HaventSleptForAYear · 10/01/2009 21:20

DS was out of day time nappies at 2.2 and asked to drop his nighttime ones when his baby brother was born 3 months later.

We were dreading it but up in the night anyway so he could go for a wee and we did also try to cut out the night time bottle at the same time (wanted to anyway).

We did have a few weeks of occasional wet beds but then it was done.

bodiddly · 10/01/2009 21:20

Brilliant .. sorry to hear you had a rough time to begin with though. Its bizarre as I guess I never thought what my mum went through at the time. I wasn't given an option about going away so I figured she was eager for me to go. I obviously know now as an adult that wasn't the case! It is a great place and it sounds like she is thriving.

CarGirl · 10/01/2009 21:23

Obviously your Mum didn't howl down the phone everytime you spoke for the first 3/4 weeks then

bodiddly · 10/01/2009 21:29

it was different then we were only allowed £5 a term pocket money and that had to include for any calls home. I used to hate phoning home because it would make me cry and I didn't want my mum to hear me cry.
