Do you check on your DC before you go to bed?

Either DP or I check on DD before we hit the sack.

But it seems that we do different 'checks.' What do you do?

usually put her the right way up, so that head rather than feet on the pillow, tuck her back in. when she was a baby i used to check she was breathing constantly by putting my hand on her chest - but i was a rather neurotic mam

I check they are breathing. Also that they are adequetly covered with bedding.

Dottoressa · 05/01/2009 22:57

I make sure they're still breathing by getting really, really close. If in doubt, I poke them to make them move. They're 4 and 6, but I got into the habit when they were babies!!

DH thinks I'm nuts...

I think his check consists of making sure they aren't hanging out of bed!

I usually just check the youngest (3) unless I am worried about anoy of the others. I check that they are still covered, still breathing and not running a temp .

littleboyblue · 05/01/2009 22:59

I normally put his blankets back on him and make sure dummy and teddy are still within his reach in the hope that I won't get woken through the night, but I do also pop in if I get up for the loo or something too.

Nemoandthefishes · 05/01/2009 22:59

I go in tuck them up if uncovered, with dd1 due to her asthma I check her breathing is normal. tidy away any toys they may trip on when going to loo. Dh checking means he sticks his head in door makes sure they are in their beds and leaves it at that.
DC are 5,3 and 2

ChubbyChub · 05/01/2009 22:59

Breathing check still
Apart from that I think I only check they are at a comfy angle and sort the blankets.
Both sleep in with me so I do these checks during the evening before I go to bed.

BoffinMum · 05/01/2009 23:00

I check they're breathing and the room temperature, and reorganise their bedding a bit so they are covered. I remove the hard plastic toys DS2 is sleeping with, Then I stand there for a bit, somtimes holding DH's hand, thinking 'We made those people' and 'My god aren't they gorgeous' and then tiptoe out.

scrooged · 05/01/2009 23:01

ds is 9 and I still check he's breathing. I cover him up and remove whatever he's put in his bed (lightsabre/toy) so it doesn't stick into him when he's asleep.

bellavita · 05/01/2009 23:01

I have a look in - cannot do much for DS1 as he is in a high sleeper (and I ain't climbing the ladder!) but DS2 I always put the duvet straight etc if needs be.

Klaw · 05/01/2009 23:01

I don't really check that she's still breathing any more. I go in so I can gaze at her and go 'awwwwwww bless, how cute and perfect is she?'

I used to go in to check on the breathing when she was younger though...She's 3 and a half now

Poledra · 05/01/2009 23:01

yes, check they're breathing and sort out their covers. Then DH checks covers again when he come to bed (about an hour later usually). Then I check them if I get up through the night.

Hmmm - hadn't realised we checked that much. Does this mean I am a neurotic parent after all?

LuckySalem · 05/01/2009 23:02

I only check when i got to bed and then I make sure that the covers are on her and she's not too cold (cold house) if I wake up in the night, I'll do it again but I dont worry if Idont

Dottoressa - word for word I could have written your response (well apart from you having 2 dc).

nancy75 · 05/01/2009 23:03

i think it means im not as neurotic as i thought!

ItsNotOnlyTheGoodBits · 05/01/2009 23:04

Erm...I don't check on him at all

Well - I did when he was in our room or when co-sleeping, but since he's been in his own room not at all.

SAying that though I'll probably check on him tonight as our flat is still so cold (see my other thread if interested) to make sure he is warm enough.

MegBusset · 05/01/2009 23:07

Not a bloody chance. No way I'm risking waking him!

DontCallMeBaby · 05/01/2009 23:07

Oh yes. Ensure angle of sleeping is not TOO weird, duvet is tucked in, menagerie of animals placed back in bed, cup of water put as far away from outflung arm as possible, big nightlight switched off and small one switched on, curtain cord not presenting strangulation hazard, still breathing, skin still peachy, hair still tousled, approx two years removed from age (still such a baby when she's asleep), definitely still breathing, small kiss, inhale hair, depart for the night.

I didn't check on her at all until she was over two, cos she used to wake up if you breathed in the same room as her, so I'm making up for lost time.

DH doesn't check her when I'm here, he must do when I'm not, if only to sort the lights out.

expectingnumber5 · 05/01/2009 23:08

I only check for breathing in the youngest (16 months) but I do check the others (8,7,5)are covered up before I go to bed.

Sometimes I fall into bed and realise I've forgotten. I have to get up again or I an't sleep.

threestars · 05/01/2009 23:10

Central heating switches off around 10pm, so when I go to bed I put a couple of blankets over dd.
ds has duvet, but is in coldest room of the house (outside walls, over garage, but he says he likes it ), so I switch on his oil-filled radiator to a reasonably low setting, to keep room temp reasonable.
Don't check when I don't have to - they're both light sleepers.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 05/01/2009 23:15

Always pop in, check they are breathing, cover them up, give them a kiss

ItsNotOnlyTheGoodBits · 05/01/2009 23:20

I think that is really sweet Expectingnumber5. I can imagine someone doing that - not me, obviously, but a 'real mom' type. It's made me smile.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 05/01/2009 23:22

13 yrs later, I still check

MinkyBorage · 05/01/2009 23:23

I kiss their little heads and check they are warm (alive!) tuck duvets in and tell them I love them.
