Hello - I'm pg with DC1 and want to use cloth nappies. Have been browsing the internet and confusing myself with the choices available - what do people think about the bumgenius (v3) one size cloth nappy? here It looks good but have a few questions which I hope some of you experienced cloth nappy users can help with:

  1. Do you need to use a wrap with it?
  1. And can you use flushable liners with it? (DC will be in nursery so need to make it as easy as possible for poo to be disposed of!)
  1. Also, how long do they take to dry?
  1. Do they leak??!!
  1. And can you really use them from newborn to toddler?

Thank you for your help!!!

Hi,
I'm new to cloth so can't answer all your questions but I know you don't need to use a wrap with the V3 bumgenius. Think the general consensus is that they are a very good all in one nappy but depending on your baby they will fit better on some than others.

Sure someone else who knows far more and has actually used them will be along soon. I'm planning to get some to try for when my dc is born in April.

Thanks ceb - I think everyone's having a sunday afternoon snooze

the new v3 go from 7lb upwasr so theretically yes they do go b to p but then i guess what age your baby potty trains at. I have sold many and know many who have used them at newborn stage and my ds is still using his nicely at age 2 and2 months with room to go.

No wrap needed - fill the pocket witht he insert privided and away you go.

You can use flushable liners but as suede cloth lined the poo generally just peel off or soaks in depending on the consistency.
The outer take a couple of hrs on a line on a fair day or overnight on an airer and the insert im finding overnight on a radiator or say half a day to a day on the line on a sunny day.

Contaonability in the bg is very good so any leaks i have known have been when they have been on too long.

Hope that helps.

I used a different pocket nappy which I think goes smaller and a bit bigger - it is called P'tits Dessous and has been great. I have also found a cheaper alternative on ebay called coolababy. I bought a few and they are exactly the same size with a slightly different popper arrangement. They wash and wear very well on my 1 yr old and are a 1/3rd cheaper than other pocket nappies.

Bicnod · 04/01/2009 15:33

Thanks minxpinx - do all the pocket nappies not need wraps? I'll have a look at coolababy and P'tits Dessous... there's so much choice it's really confusing!

OP posts:
minxpinx · 04/01/2009 15:42

It is confusing! It is a bit trial and error really. Yup - pocket nappies don't need wraps - that's why I use them (+ they grow with the baby). I got a voucher from my local council that gave me £50 worth of free nappies - worth checking if yours do that too...

Bicnod · 04/01/2009 15:45

good plan, will check council website now. have found coolababy on ebay - do you think they would be ok for newborn/through the night etc? do you find yours leak at all? thanks so much for your help

OP posts:
minxpinx · 04/01/2009 15:58

I don't see why they wouldn't be ok for a newborn. I just put some extra stuffing in them for the night and it is fine (I usually use some prefolds - which you can also get cheaply on ebay). I haven't had any trouble with leakage but I have only used them since my baby has been weaned so the poo isn't as sloppy as when she was purely breastfed!

Bicnod · 04/01/2009 16:00

thanks - i think i'll get a few to try out as they really are pretty cheap...

have discovered that my council run 'nappuccino' events where you can go and find out about cloth nappies and can borrow a trial pack for £20 - think there are discounts on some of the prefold and wrap nappies as well but was thinking pocket nappies would be easier to use...

thanks for all your help

I've been using V2 Bumgenius for about 14 months now and they are brilliant, very few leaks, no wrap required and I tried flushable liners but it makes all the poo squidge out of the top of the nappy which so gross!!

I just flop the solids down the loo and then take the insert out, fold it inside the fleece/wrap and dry pail them, wash on a 60 with one Fairy tablet, I have not got one stain on mine and they are well used! I've got 20 pink ones and I wash every third day.

I bought one off ebay and loved it after the first use, then managed to find a BOGOF offer so saved loads of money, my DD is 16 months and they still fit her lovely!

Bicnod · 06/01/2009 20:26

Thanks mummytowillow - so do you think there's any real point in getting V3?

OP posts:
nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 06/01/2009 21:41

if you can get bogof v2 from a reputable seller then i would get them - getting of ebay you cannot get the warranty on them as there are no authorised ebay sellers(i have claimed on 3 of mine so worth having) - also allegedly there are some 'fakes' about. My v2 are the late v2 and the differences are very subtle.

Bicnod · 06/01/2009 21:46

do you do bogof v2 nappyzone?! or do you know any sellers who do?

OP posts:
nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 06/01/2009 21:49

no they all sold out back in oooo april i think - some sellers held some back to sell at a higher margin (not me i am not that clever) but less than v3 but dont know whom if anyone has any left?? I am also led to beleive that argos though you can save about 30p on bumgenius there that they are infact old v2 and not the v3 so an example of what i just mentioned . Hope that helps if you can follow what i am actually saying lol.

Bicnod · 06/01/2009 22:12

booooooooo

we're going to a local 'nappuccino' event (?!) which DH is a bit about but they show you the different kind of nappies apparently and we can get a trial pack there of 7 nappies/wraps for about £20 (discounted by the local council) so will try those and think i will get a few bumgenius v3 as well as they sound like they're pretty good... then decide which work best on DC once he/she arrives (due end April) and order in bulk after that.

Does that sound like a sensible plan nappyzone? is that what you would usually recommend your clients to do?

OP posts:
nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 06/01/2009 22:14

yeeeeeeeeeeeeees - its good to see em in the flesh - alot of the nappacinos are ran in conjuntion with lollipop so you might even see a bg v3 there. enjoy .

NellieTheEllie · 06/01/2009 22:36

Hi, I have used the BG V2 and V3 (can't really tell which is which as differences are small) on my Ds and Dd.
I have had very few leaks - usually only if I was slack in changing them.
My son wore them till potty trained and my Dd has been in them since about 12weeks. The only reason she wasn't in them from birth was because she was a scrawny wee thing and there wasn't really a good fit around her legs!
I tried several others, but liked these as VERY easy to use (even my Dh will use them as they are just like disposibles) and also they are a slim fit so I can buy what ever clothes I like and she can still wear cloth with them.

BG v2 leaked something fierce with DS around 12 mth as he'd outgrown them. Def not b-t-p for him and we did PT starting 14 mth, but he's 90th percentile weight/height. Still, was "only" 27 lb at the time. You can use a microfibre dish cloth as insert instead of buying the BG inserts. Outer dries quickly and dish towels can be folded out for quicker drying.
