Hello - I'm pg with DC1 and want to use cloth nappies. Have been browsing the internet and confusing myself with the choices available - what do people think about the bumgenius (v3) one size cloth nappy? here It looks good but have a few questions which I hope some of you experienced cloth nappy users can help with:

  1. Do you need to use a wrap with it?
  1. And can you use flushable liners with it? (DC will be in nursery so need to make it as easy as possible for poo to be disposed of!)
  1. Also, how long do they take to dry?
  1. Do they leak??!!
  1. And can you really use them from newborn to toddler?

Thank you for your help!!!

Thanks Nellytheelly and Ches... so if I have an enormous baby BG might not be the way forward...

I'm looking forward to the nappuccino event so I can see some cloth nappies and how they work - I think we'll have to wait til DC turns up to make a proper decision but its really helpful hearing everyone's experiences.

I have about 7 v2's and just bought 3 v3's but they look very much the same. We love the bumgenius, leaks are rare, mostly wicking from legs if left on too long but good for containing poo. DD is 21 months and was quite skinny till a few weeks ago, now gone fairly chunky but they are a good fit and DH loves them, they are as easy as a disposable to put on and you can add more stuffing if needed.

I used them from when she was about 9lb, she was only little when born so that was a few weeks old.

Just bought the v3 in blue as my others are pink but had a little boy 3 weeks ago [preen] sorry can't help myself!

We love our BGs! They converted my DH, who loathed the idea of reusables, to the extent that he now evangelises about them to work colleagues!

To answer your qns:

  • No wrap. This is part of the reason why BGs are much slimmer than other reusables, and also why DHs love them as they are just like disposables to use
  • Occasionally use flushable liners if he is teething as nappies are nasty and they seem fine, although we use fleece liners most of the time. Now he is 9mo and on lots of solids, we probably don't even need to use liners TBH, but I like them as stain preventers
  • Dry very quickly - the outers come out of the wash almost dry, so it is only the pads that take a bit longer. Dry overnight on an airer usually, or very quickly (hour or so) on the line in the summer.
  • No problems with leaks really - just a handful over 9 months. Far better than friends using disposables.
  • We trialled different types of nappies when he was a nb (bought one of each main type and used side by side with disposables) and then picked BG as our fave and went full time at about 10 weeks. DS was a big newborn (4kg) but then put on weight slowly so by 10 weeks he was only average size and we;ve never had a problem. He's 9mo but a tall boy (75th centile) and only on second set of poppers so still plenty of growth left in them.

I find caring for them really easy - empty poo into loo, then pop nappy into a bucket with a mesh bag inside. Splash of teatree or lavender oil if smelly but no water. No more handling needed as I just put mesh bag into wash - nappies ocme out in wash, and inserts come out of nappies. When newborn and poo was messier, I would prewash cold with no spin before washng at 60C. Now they are less messy I just wash straight away at 40C, unless partic smelly. Splash of teatree or lavender oil in place of conditioner helps freshen them.

I have a few BG v1s, and must say DS at 17 months is almost out of them. Later versions may be better, in fairness.

Can I put a word in for Wonderoos, though? Another pocket nappy, still has loads of room (a true birth to potty), comes in lots of great colours, brilliant containment...

Also you can get lots of offers and pick them up second hand for good prices.

I use a paper insert and they're so easy.

Paper liner, sorry! Duh.

I started using my BG V.3's when DS was 3 days old and he was a skinny little thing (still is). Like everyone else has said - leaks aren't that regular and is usually a result of not putting it on quite right as much as anything.

Saying that, I did have a few occasions where I missed a big poo and it seemed to leak out a bit through the stitching on the legs. Never had any up the back incidents though - unlike every single one of my disposable using chums!
