Potty training started today!!!

Ds turned 3 yesterday and I decided to try him out in pants today! Haven't really prepared but we have one potty upstairs and one downstairs and we've had two accidents and two wees in the potty so far! He's had one of his christmas chocolates for each wee in the potty and I've promised him two chocolates if he does a poo.

Is it stupidly optimistic to think that because he's three this might be quite easy?

I'm slightly concerned that he hasn't done a poo yet today, I'm hoping he's not holding it in. And I'm wondering if there's any chance I'll be able to go out in the sales with a potty training little one?!

Any advice/ideas welcome!

Well today was up and down. Started well when she had a bare bum, no accidents but as soon as I got her dressed she wet herself, new pants on she let the rest of it out I had offered her the potty and sat her on the toilet.

She was then dry all day, did wees and poos on the potty lunchtime

We went for a walk no prolems, had tea etc. I offered her the potty or toilet when she got out of her highchair - no, she waited 2 mins then wet herself

I think I need to start insisting she sits at certain times, I think I can see a bit of a pattern to the times she is going so I will try that.

Good Luck all!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 02/01/2009 09:59

Sorry to hear your having ups and downs 'callme' but its a good sign that she's going through the main bit of the day...

yesterday we only had one accident, and that was at home... she was too busy getting books off the bookshelf and just wet... But saying that we went out from about 2pm till 6.30ish and not one single accident, we've even stopped asking her if she needs it as she's going herself... the only time i'm asking is if we're leaving the house for a trip somewhere i know there's no toilet on the way etc... and once or twice a day i'll remind her 'remember, what do you do when you need a wee?' and she'll answer 'go on my potty like a big girl'

I'm hoping for no accidents today... thats how DS's potty training went, 2 accidents the first day, one the second, and none the third... so fingers are well and truely crossed here!!

Hi! Just spotted this thread - started potty training dd on Tuesday (she is 2.4). Been a bit of a mixed bag really. She has been going to the toilet for about 3 months to do her poos religiously so thought it wouldn't be too hard! We had 8 accidents on Tuesday, 10 on Wed, none yesterday but then 2 again today. (Thankfully tho she still has been doing her poos on toilet so no real messy ones!) Complicated probably by fact that she got chickenpox on Wed and today is her worst day with them. She hardly slept last night so can't really blame her for not being in the mood to potty train today!

Beginning to feel a bit concerned that things are not going well. DD was at Granny's for NYE and was ok then, only one accident. Today we were there again for a roast and she had 2 accidents - she gets really easily over stimulated these days and still will not let on if she needs to go. Most worryingly, we've had no poo since Tuesday. Today she obviously needed one (farts, dreamy look on face) but when put on Granny's toilet she immediately wriggled to get off again. She had a few tiny poo pellets escape, so she's obviously holding it in.

If any of you have read any books about this (I'm beginning to wish I had) can you tell me if this is ok, a danger sign that we should stop, or a rite of passage (excuse the pun)?!

callmeovercautious · 02/01/2009 20:20

jennymac Welcome! - Your DD sounds a bit like mine, same age too

Today she went to Nursery all day, had a nap as was up early and went in the nappy they put on her which is fine, she was asleep! Apart from that just one small wee which she "caught and held" until she was on the potty. Wet pants but no puddle iyswim? She has got the hang of shouting for help at Nursery I think - I suppose they have to make it very clear to the carers whereas I can just look at her face

glaskham - well done your DD Sounds like she is gearing up to following the 7 day potty training gurus advice

Hope everyone else is going well. I have high hopes for this weekend, 2 solid days of bribary should do the trick!

hotCheeseBurns · 02/01/2009 22:34

Yay I'm back! Glad to see everyone's still going, it's interesting to hear how differently all the children cope with potty training isn't it?

Ds has been in nappy-pants while we've been away but has still been using the potty on his own and not many accidents. When we're out though he just goes in his pull-up pants without even telling me. I guess he knows there's no potty about and that's that.

Back to nursery on monday and I'm feeling optimistic about sending him in proper pants. Hopefully I'll feel the same after the weekend is up...

Welcome back hotcheeseburns

Hope you had a good break.

I think Nursery will help, sounds odd as my DD stuggles with it but it is harder for them to get attention so the emphasis is more on them to ask iyswim?

Our Nursery have been great about all her accidents, her key worker seemed very glad to have had no poo accidents today

Good luck for tomorrow!

Weegle · 03/01/2009 09:12

Welcome back HCB.

Sounds like your DS is doing really well. We had our first poo accident yesterday - yuk! DS tried to get to the potty but was too far, he was very distressed. Hoping that means it won't happen again as it was one of parenting's grosser experiences . Anyway apart from that he's been dry since Day 1 with only one wee accident (now day 6). He's very stubborn though and won't go on the potty as a matter of course but isn't really asking us at all yet. So it's a bit of coercion on our part with "Shall we read your Giant book?" etc etc. How long until he asks to go? And should I back off and let him have the accidents or keep on reminding him about the potty? Which way is best? Also, whilst we are out he just doesn't go. He holds it in! That's been fine so far as we haven't been out more than 4 hours but what happens when we go out for an entire day - so far he's refused all public loos and his porta-potty! What are everyon else's LO's doing when out? Or are you sticking with pull-ups like HCB?

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 03/01/2009 09:23

Hobnob- My DS didn't have a poo on his potty for the first few days when i potty trained him... but he was still clean after the first 2 days.

I read Gina Fords 'potty training in 7 days' before doing DS nearly 2 years ago... i didn't follow it to the letter but roughly went along with her instructions. I didn't use any food sort of bribe, i had a star sheet with DS for the first 2 weeks and after that nothing... As for DD i've not needed anything except she'll get a 'sweety' at the end of the day if she's been good all round, not just on the potty, but everytime she goes she says, 'i've been a good girl now i get my sweety tonight'.

We didn't have a single accident all day yesterday!!! I think we've done it!! so in 3 days we had 3 accidents in total (the last day being accident free) yesterday she had a nappy on for her nap and bedtime and thats it, even had a poo on the potty with no prompting from me!! I'm really proud of her progress so fast!! I had tried about 7mths ago to potty train her but she never had a single wee on the potty in the first day so i decided she mustn't be ready. The day i got my BFP she had her first ever wee on the potty, so that was in august, but she'd still only go if she had a bare bum- if she had clothes or even just knickers on we had no hope... then all of a sudden she's grasped it!! I'm glad i waited till she was ready as its made it much less stressful for me, and much less accidents to clean up!!

hobnob57 · 03/01/2009 20:11

ok panic over. Just before nap time I was about to put a nappy on DD when she whispered 'need a poo'. I thought it was a nap avoidance tactic, but minutes later one HUGE triumphant poo appeared in the potty! Fingers crossed it's the first of many

callmeovercautious · 03/01/2009 20:13

Well done glaskham I read the same book and realised we had been doing "stage one" for months really. The transition from bare bottom at home into clothes is definately a tell tale sign. DD is gradually getting the hang of the difference.

We are going with no nappy of any type as she was in pull ups before we started PT (they were better for nappy rash on her).

Accident free day here today BUT she was holding in a poo and being stubborn about going to the toilet so I had to take her clothes off for her and put her on before she went.

Poos are definately trickier all round to deal with

I am hoping tomorrow will be as good and then Nursery Monday - that will be the real test.

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 04/01/2009 09:42

yesterday was our second day without a single accident!!! wuhoo!!!! thats 2 continuous dry days!!!!

Dont know if oday will be any different though, she's been up a fair amount in the night with 'earache' so we've all had very little sleep.... so far so good though this morning!!

ebaldy · 04/01/2009 16:28

Hi So glad to hear that I am not the only mad one trying to potty train at this time of year. We are now on day 6 but have had half and half. If I ask my DS2 who is 3 to go and do a wee then he will we have even had a poo on the toilet. But if I leave him and do not ask him he wees and poos in his pants. Thought as I have left him till he was 3 would be easy!! My DS1 we started at 2yrs 4mths and he was a nightmare and it took us months to get it right with Poos being the worst till he was over 3.
Any advice would be great still not confident to take him out without training nappies/pants on which my friend says is the wrong thing to do but when you have changed them for the 5 time and you are at home you don't want that when you are out do you.

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 04/01/2009 17:26

ebaldy- i really reccomend the 'Gina Ford- potty training in a week' book- was a godsend for me... even just to confirm things i was already doing were right. I think i got my copy off ebay for about £4.50 inc p&p... or your local library may have a copy you could get out??

I find i've 'cracked' it when i no longer need to ask about if they need to go, just when we are going out etc. DD has had a bit of a temp today and rosey cheeks, very drowsy too compared to normal and we've only had one accident still, and even then it was becasue neither me or DH were in the room and she hadn't been able to get her tights and knickers down fast enough. I admit thats probably my fault for putting tights on her that the waistband is higher than her skirt so a bit of a faf!! poor girls though, she'd really tried!! We have had 2 car trips today too on our 'errands' and one was an hours round trip, she fell asleep and still no accidents!!

also i found they seem to be more aware of wetting themselves in public, DS would never have accidents outdoors, but would sometimes 'hang-on' too long and wet himself. Not had a full day being out with DD in knickers yet but i will definately be taking her in knickers, pull ups would just confuse her IMO.

hotCheeseBurns · 04/01/2009 20:11

Well done glaskham, it sounds like your dd has really got the hang of it! Hope she's feeling better now?

hobnob - I bet you were thrilled with that triumphant poo haha! Gross but very exciting right?!

ebaldy - sorry to hear you're struggling, I'm afraid I don't have nearly enough experience to give advice... I hope you manage to sort it out. I've been taking ds out in pull-up pants so far and even when he's wee'd in them he went straight back into pants and using the potty when we got home so I don't think it confused him?

And as for me, we've had one combined poo and wee in the potty this morning and then two wees in his pants I'm starting to worry about nursery tomorrow now. He was doing so well, I dont know what's gone wrong.

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 05/01/2009 08:39

Morning, was still only the one accident all day yesterday... we're going to toddler group this morning which will be the real challenge!! an hour and a half of running about, followed by a 5min walk to collect DS from nursery and a 15min walk home afterwards.... so we'll be out for about 2hrs in total, and i'm only taking spare knickers and pants.... no nappy is going anywhere at all- am i just stupid? wishful? or plain bonkers?... think just a mix of all 3 really!!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 05/01/2009 12:51

toddler group was great!! not a single accident!!! she went to the toilet twice, and managed the walk to and from fine too!! I'm sooooo pleased!! i think we've cracked it now!!

santapaws · 05/01/2009 14:05

Hi, i started my DS (2.4) on 30th and hes done fantastic! Im sooo proud of him. Hes been doing wees in his potty for ages when hs had no nappy on but we had 2 accidents on tuesday then its been in the potty everytime and we've had 3 poos in his potty too, no probs!

Thing is, he will wee in the toilet, (by climbing onto the toilet and kind of kneeling over it) but think hes a bit confused about whether he should use the potty or toilet, what do i do?

Also he went to preschool today and wee'd everywhere once but i think that was because he hasnt been to preschool for 3 weeks and was unsure about it all, plus he cant speak either so at home, just goes, gets his potty and wees but how do i get him to communicate to me he wants a wee if he cant speak?

Thanks x

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 05/01/2009 14:16

Does he hold his bits when he needs a wee? i find my DD will always touch herself when she feels she needs one...

can he say anything? like mummy or daddy? if so he should soon start saying 'wee' at least.... if you keep asking 'need a wee' and exagerate the 'wee' part then he'll pick up on that word and maybe he'll just start saying it.

I agree with you on the nursery thing, I expected Dd to wee all over at toddlers today as she's not been around other children and in that 'exiting' atmosphere since before xmas, when she wasn't potty training, but luckily she was fine.

santapaws · 05/01/2009 17:27

Nope, doesnt seem to hold himself or anything like that, just goes straight for his potty. No again, can say daddy, thats it. I keep trying to say wee all the time to him, do you need a wee, oh you did a wee etc, but so far, nothing.

Im sure he'll find some way of telling us!

Thanks anyway
x

ebaldy · 05/01/2009 17:53

Been at work today so could not catch up till now on any advice people have posted for me. Thanks will have to find a copy of GF book. DS went to my mums today and she said he was dry till 2 when she thinks he was getting tied and fought with her to go to the loo. No poo today which is unusal I think he his holding on to them. First day back at pre school tomorrow so will have to see how we go.

callmeovercautious · 05/01/2009 20:05

glaskham - great news about toddler group Sounds like your lo is nearly there! I agree with the no nappies anywhere if you are doing as well. Nappies sometimes but not others might be confusing. Not sure about pull ups - perhaps if a lo has never worn them as nappies (like my DD has).

HCB - How was Nursery? Hope it went well.

Santapaws - my DD is the same, one minute she wants potty, the next the toilet. Fickle things children I am just letting her choose. Sometimes she just goes herself others I have to push her a little still. If your DS is not talking yet have you considered signing? Just a few like words like "potty" would make life easier for you both. Most libraries have a learning pack, you can just choose a few words to start with and see how he gets on. We found it very helpful when DD was younger, it helped her let us know what she wanted rather than just crying and guesswork!

ebaldy - Holding poo seems like a running theme here - quite usual I think. Good luck for pre-school

As for us - DD had a full day at Nursery today, I was so shocked when I picked her up - she was in the same clothes as this morning no accidents at all
We are at home tomorrow so let's hope she keeps it up for the sake of my carpets

hotCheeseBurns · 05/01/2009 20:46

Full day at nursery today! Apparently he did loads of wees and two poos on the potty and only one accident, in the morning, so I'm very pleased!

I got a tommy tippee potette from freecycle yesterday so next time we're out and about I'll give that ago. Can't imagine ds using a full size toilet! He'd fall down it surely?!

OP posts:
callmeovercautious · 05/01/2009 21:34

Yay

The potettes are great but my DD is quite tall so it is hit and miss if she will go on it as she is not v comfy sat on it. I like it as I (DD) can use it anywhere - a bit cold outside though

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 06/01/2009 08:31

We have 2 pottete's... one in the car and one to take out with us. I also have a brand new 'spare' that is just waiting to get used, if not with DD with DD2 in about 2 years time!! Managed to get it from my local wollies a couple of weeks ago down to £1.24 including some of the liners too!!
