How soon did you take your newborn out and about if they were a winter baby?

I am expecting DS in January. My DD was born in the summer when we were living in a much warmer country so this never really occurred to me...
But how soon after birth did you take your newborn out in the UK winter (to the shops, supermarket, local playgroup, walking the dog etc) and what did they wear?

Straight away really.
DD1 born 17 Dec and was in hospital for 5 days but we got out on Xmas Eve, she was healthy (just had SN's) and it was party season so she came everywhere we'd normally have gone.

DD2 born 19 Dec at home. Had to take her up to the hospital next day for checks and on way home too DD1 and DD2 to London Zoo. It was icy and I was walking around breastfeeding her with very chilly nips!Don't rememeber the next time I took her out bt know when she was 5 days old I was out doing last bit of Xmas shopping with her and then out and about over the festive period as usual.

Oh, sorry and they wore, vests, sleepsuits, snowsuits, hat, and in carry cot thing inside buggy with a blanket and on a sheepskin rug

or a sling. Same clothes as before but inside sling under my coat with me.

YUM

Have fun and good luck with DC2

My ds was born in August so was quite hot. However, I was told my mw or hv that I shouldn't really take him out until he is at least 4/5 days old as he had a lot of adjusting to do which makes sense. They spend 9 months inside you, then go through the trauma of birth, stay for however long in hospital, may have visitors, comes home and it must all be a bit much for them.
I ignored it and took ds out the day after we got home from hospital (he was 2 days old)

dd2 was a january baby and I think i was taking her out and about at less than a week old - must have actually because dh only had a week off work and dd1 needed to go to nursery etc. She had a snowsuit and a babynest thing

ChirpyGrinch · 11/12/2008 08:05

DD1 (feb) came out wiht us at 2 weeks, but only as I had had a CS and couldn't get the buggy down teh steps of the hosue.
DD2 (oct) was out in a sling 36 hours after birth!

sagacious · 11/12/2008 08:26

Jan PFB was out and about after 3 days (would have been sooner but couldn't physically walk IYKWIM)

meglet · 11/12/2008 08:28

DS was born in November and out in the buggy on day 8. I had had a cs so couldn't really do it sooner.

TrinityRhino · 11/12/2008 08:28

dd3 was 7th of feb in scotland and it was below freezing
had no choice about when to go out
I had her on the wed morn at 5am, came home at about 5pm and then had to take dd1 to school and dd2 to nursery for 8.45am on the thurs

notevenamousie · 11/12/2008 08:37

Straight away. DD was born Christmas Eve weighing 5lb2oz, came home NYE weighing 4lb12 and was snuggled up in a sling and out the next day. I got a prem baby snowsuit, and she had that on with vest, babygro, cardigan, 2 hats. I used a sling the majority of the time til she was much bigger, especially on cold. wet days.

DD born in January at 22.16. John Lewis the following morning!

tistheCEEBEEtobejolly · 11/12/2008 09:30

Have just had DS2 (3 weeks ago) - he was born on Thursday, came home on the Saturday and then we took him for a short walk (I had a cs so couldn't go very far) with his older brother on the Monday - he has pretty much been out every day since.

He wears a vest, babygro/one layer of clothes, a snowsuit and is in a carry cot with a blanket on. I also put a little wooly beanie hat on him.

I was in the same position - DS1 was born in the hottest July ever so it has come as a shock to me and DH that we actually have to wrap this baby up

hkz · 11/12/2008 12:09

Thanks for all the replies!! Was getting worried that I would be stuck indoors for weeks on end with a newborn and a stir crazy toddler!
Looking forward to putting all those fiddly layers of clothes on the baby and then taking them off again numerous times a day!!

DS was born in February and went out when he was a week old (had to take dd to playgroup)

Don't forget to use the rain shield if it's windy or partcularly cold. I also had a sheepskin liner for his pram and car seat.

Bramshott · 11/12/2008 12:18

We took DD (born in Jan 03 with snow on the ground) out in her first week home from hospital, wrapped up in a snowsuit. You need to develop a thick skin for all the grannies and shop assistants who will say "should that baby be out?"

Bensonbluebird · 11/12/2008 13:50

DS1 was born at home in Jan, I had to take him to the docs the next day for his newborn health check. It was sleating. When we left there wasn't a bus due for ages so we walked, very slowly, home. Not much fun.

My top tip for a toasty baby is socks under a sleepsuit as well as vest and snowsuit and sling inside your coat.

ohreindeerwhatamessysleigh · 11/12/2008 13:57

Ds2 was born in Feb. He was out and about (supermarket etc) by about 3 days, and daily dog walks (hour long) by 10 days old. He wore vest, sleepsuit, cardigan, snugglebaby fleece wrap, and was in a P&T cocoon. Hat on head too.

Indith · 11/12/2008 13:57

3 or 4 days old I think. Def all about slings so you keep them all toasty warm snuggled up to you under your coat.

thumbElf · 11/12/2008 14:01

pretty much straight away - in vest, sleepsuit, fleecy coat, blanket, little hat and mitts. couldn't overwrap him as he overheats really easily. i was never able to use any of those snowsuity things - he got waaay too hot.

crokky · 11/12/2008 15:35

Personally, I'd be careful about going to toddler groups in cold weather with a new baby when there are quite a lot of bugs around. My opinion is 4-6 weeks and during this time, I'd have close family to play with toddler etc.

I have a toddler and a baby - toddlers are often snotty faced bum scratchers who cough all over eachother! They aren't hygienic and they infect eachother quite easily and personally, I wouldn't have wanted a new baby getting this sort of stuff.

My DD is 8 months and she is hopefully recovering from something that was just a cold/cough for my toddler DS. For DD, it turned into a very nasty chest infections and she is on antibiotics and I have an asthma mask and drugs for her whilst she is ill. She isn't asthmatic and she is still breastfeeding - even so, toddlers stuff can be not nice for a baby.

merrykittymas · 11/12/2008 15:37

DD2 was a January baby ans was out the day after she was born (homebirth) for hospital check then we went shopping.

MrsMattie · 11/12/2008 15:40

Apart from transferring her from home to hospital, I have kept my Nov-born baby in for the first week (and even now, 4 weeks later almost, we are going out as little as possible). So much cosier at home!

I had Feb baby last time and rushed out with him really quickly. I don't know why. It's not necessary, really.

MrsMattie · 11/12/2008 15:40

sorry, should have said transferring from hospital to home! Doh!

morningpaper · 11/12/2008 15:41

I put baby in a snowsuit in a sling and buttoned my coat OVER the baby
