Do you think I will need a double buggy with a 21 month age gap between kids?

I am thinking ahead here.... We are expecting DC2 next July when DS will be around 21 months old. He isn't even walking just now (13 months) so doubt he will be able to walk that far by summertime. I was thinking I could maybe get by with a sling for babba and keep using the pram for DS but do you think we would ultimately need a double buggy?

oops just realised a similar question was asked very recently!

he'll probably be still having naps, so I would say definitely double buggy

I had a double buggy with a 22 month gap and was glad I did.

Don't worry, this question comes up often I had a 21 month gap and used a double buggy once carrying ds1 in the sling became too much. I didn't use it for long though - about 6months regularly then sporadically after that until we got a buggy board. I wish I'd bought secondhand rather than brand new.

luckylady74 · 30/11/2008 14:08

If he sleeps in the pushchair then yes. If not then a Litaf seat2go is a good compromise I think. I have a Joovy that I got off ebay for £50 which is a buggy with an integral toddler seat/buggy board.

Depends how much walking you will be doing

gigglewitch · 30/11/2008 18:43

we also have 21mo age gap, and yes we did have a twin buggy. much easier pretty much regardless of where we went. Couldn't have survived without it.
Used it for absolutely every trip out for around 18 months, then let ds2 hop in and out for another 6 months or so before going down to single.

SleighGirl · 30/11/2008 18:54

I would get a 2nd hand one because when the older one is unwell you will need it. Plus that first winter when it is tanking down with rain or your running late it's less stressful to plonk them both in there.

laidbackinengland · 30/11/2008 18:58

I will have a similar gap between DS3 and DC4, am planning on using a sling/buggy and buggy/buggyboard combaination. I am training DS3 age 20 months on the buggy board at the moment and he absolutely loves it.

muppetgirl · 30/11/2008 18:58

I will have exactly the same age gap -dc 3 due in july with ds 2 being 21 months. I am going to use a sling, as I did with ds 2 and put ds 2 in the pram as he does't nap in it, it's just so I can take him out and about. Ds 2 is 13 months and not walking/crawling yet.

abraid · 30/11/2008 18:59

I can also add to the Yes vote. Mine were 20 minutes apart and the buggy was v. useful to complement the sling plus single buggy.

StarlightAssumptionMcKenzie · 30/11/2008 19:06

Hi I have a just 2yr old and 11 week old so same gap.

The majority of the time I use a single McClaren stroller that I've had since the birth of DC1, and a sling. As we set out, DC1 goes in the buggy and DC2 goes in sling. When we get 'there' I will often get out DC1 for a walk/run-around. Then I'll either switch back to go home or if DC1 is doing okay he'll walk home.

However, we go out EVERY day walking between 1-3 miles, so I have found having a double useful too, particularly for nast weather. We have the cossatto 'you and me'. I woul suggest you buy one new since I was given, and bought two second hand twins and the wheels had obviously taken some battering and made the already heavy buggy even heavier. The later you decide to buy the less use you'll have.

We also have a cheap Argos stroller so that when we are out with two adults we can have one each to push and it enables DH and I to take the kiddies out seperately.

BTW slings are great, but it can be hard to pick up and fight to strap in a kicking screaming child going through the terrible twos whilst wearing another baby.

Mine are also 21 months apart and I was unsure what we'd need until we needed it, iyswim. We did the sling thing for the first few weeks but as we walk a lot and do the shopping using the pushchair a way of carrying them both was essential.

I bought a Bertini Bidwell second hand - it has a toddler seat on top, very much like the iCandy Pear (I think that's what it's called) but much, much cheaper. Not as glam looking though...

Still using it now DD is 2.5 and DS is 9mo, but they swap places too - he goes in the toddler seat for a better view and she snuggles in the pram bit.

whomovedmychocolate · 30/11/2008 19:13

We got one and got rid of it fairly quickly - DD was 22 months when DS showed up! Now we take a sling and a buggy, put DS in the buggy and when DD gets tired, she gets to go in the buggy and he goes in the sling.

Frankly double buggies can be a total PITA - you can't get into the local M&S loos with ours - the doorways are too narrow.

We do however have a pram with buggy board, now that's quite good for short runs and DD thinks she's driving which keeps her occupied.

I have 21 mths between my dds and definately could not have survived without a double.

picklesmama · 01/12/2008 17:18

My gap is 27 months and Phil + Ted's absolute necessity for me - we live in London and walk a lot though. Buggy boards are a right hassle and my 2 month old is already over 13lb so a sling is heavy going. Plus mine always sleep all the time in a sling which is not great if you (a) like to go out in the afternoons and (b) like having evenings to yourself!

BabiesEverywhere · 01/12/2008 17:25

We have a 2 year gap between our children 3 months and 2.3 years and I am a new pram convert, I love our P&T Vibe. I still love my slings but it is far more practical to use a pram more of the time.

noonki · 01/12/2008 18:02

an absolutely resounding YES. A 20 month old cant stand on a buggy board for more than about 15 minutes, and can wander off / have paddy

mine are 3 & 18 months now and I still use mine almost daily (3 year old normally walks but if he gets tired he can hop in)

Sycamoretree · 01/12/2008 18:20

Yes. If you can remotely afford it, or can get an ebay bargain, I'd rec the Mountain Buggy Urban Double. You can slot a carry cot on one side and use the other as a pushchair, then convert when the new baby is old enough. It looks deceptively big, but it actually fits through a standard door way. I also liked not having to put one baby at the back, or low down to the ground.

I never did get to grips with my bloody buggy board - sometimes we go out in the single and DD (now 3) likes to sit in the basket underneath if she gets tired

mifi · 02/12/2008 10:34

I have 28 month gap between children and needed the twin pram more for first few months but like franke I wish I bought a second hand or cheeper one because I rarely use it now except on holidays or walking in woods when my toddler gets tired. I stop using the sling as my toddler was toilet trained and found it hard when out to help her on and off loo with baby in it also I had back problems from pregnancy too. If you do buy one though, do your research as I have had some difficulties with doorways etc because i went for three wheeler mountain type and the wheels are so fat they prevent you getting through.

ELR · 02/12/2008 10:36

i had double with 3 year gap used daily for 6 months then got buggy board
