No. 2 due when no. 1 is 18 months - do I need a double buggy?

I'm trying to decide whether we need a double buggy or whether DD will be able to get by with a buggyboard.

I have a Quinny buzz at the moment which (1) I know and love and (2) I paid a fortune for. I'm not wild about buying another buggy so I wondered whether we could get by with a buggy board? I think DD should be able to walk by then so she should be able to hold on. Guess the problem is if she gets tired or wants a nap.
What's the general consensus/experience? Will DD still be small enough that she does need a buggy?

And a second question: if we do need a double buggy the Phil & Teds seems to be the most popular option. I've never been that keen on it though because the one on the bottom gets a fabulous view of the top one's butt, and not much else. Do P&T users find that a problem?

Depends on how much time you are likely to be in buggy for - my 18 month old would definitely not be ready for buggyboard for any length of time so I would say you do need a double buggy

dilbertina · 26/11/2008 14:18

I would say yes. How about sling for baby to start with if dd in buggy, and then get a mclaren double buggy or something if you need it? (You should be able to get one for under £150)

Dragonbrandybutter · 26/11/2008 14:19

i think you do need one, if you want to be able to go for walks.
i didn't chose and p&t because i don't like that the one on the bottom has no view.
i have a instep nipper 360 and think they are great.
it all depends on your lifestyle really. for long walks then i'd go for the nipper and for shopping then maybe the maclaren double would be more suitable.
hang on to the quinny as you won't always have both kids with you and a single buggy is very handy even when you have two kids.

Yes you def will and anyway i dont think a buggy board will fit on the quinny

Ohforfoxsake · 26/11/2008 14:23

Personally I would have a double buggy. At 18 months your DD will be able to walk, but not far and with no sense. You'll have to control her and it will be very, very, very slow getting anyway. And I would anticipate tired child tantrums too

You could start with a sling for the newborn and use the buggy for your toddler.

Most people I know are very happy with their P&T. I have favoured a side-by-side buggy because my oldest two were so little (14 months apart) but not such a great idea with a toddler poking a newborn

Sam100 · 26/11/2008 14:26

Would say definitely yes - 18 mths between our 2 and I thought I could get away without a double but as we used to walk quite a lot was still using it when dd1 was 3 and dd2 18 mths. Then number 3 came along - so we have had 4 good years use out of our double!

Went for the nipper as well - if you have room in the boot it is a fab pushchair - light and covers all terrains.

Bramshott · 26/11/2008 14:27

Yes, I'd think so. I would not put DD2 (20 months) on a buggy board - I don't think she'd stay there! You could get by with a buggy for the older one and sling and then backpack for the younger one though if you're feeling strong.

TooMuchTV · 26/11/2008 14:29

We picked up an old double buggy at an NCT sale and although I don't use it as much as the single buggy/sling combination I am very glad we have it (I have a 21 mths gap). It is great if I am going shopping for any length of time e.g. to a shopping centre as they are both contained, I can try clothes on (not easy with dc2 in a sling) and stop for a coffee or lunch (again not so easy with a baby in a sling). We also bought a buggy board at the same NCT sale although won't be using it until the baby can go in the maclaren buggy. Ours is a graco stadium duo (tandem rather than side by side) - it is rather heavy but surprisingly manouverable. I think the side by side ones are not that great in shops. Most people seem to like the P&Ts and they are more compact for getting round the shops etc.

Hadeda · 26/11/2008 14:29

I see virtually the same question was asked earlier so thank you for answering me too!

I think I probably need to accept the inevitable and look into double buggies. Maybe I'll try a sling first and buy the buggy when needed. I had a front carrier (a bushbaby, like a baby bjorn) for DD1 and at 7 weeks that was already doing my back in so I'll need to find a sling that's a bit better. Damn, another purchase!

I have a 23 month age gap and love my P&T.

As for the view, I've stuck loads of kids in the back and not one has complained. I figure it's a bit like being on the train. You can't see where you're going but you can see plenty out of the side.

It's fab for the days that Ds1 is at the childminder and I only have DS2 as I don't have to swap buggies over in the car if I only want a single. And when DS1 wants to walk I'm not left pushing round a half empty side by side.

It might be worth considering.........

thenewme · 26/11/2008 14:42

Yes, you will need a double buggy imo/ime.

OneBoyOneGirl · 26/11/2008 14:44

yes i had the same age gap and used one for at least 3/4 months

Pippinella · 27/11/2008 13:14

Absolutely yes, you will need a double!

I'd recommend a jane Powertwin in a heartbeat, mine was fab.

insywinsyspider · 29/11/2008 21:05

I had 19 months between ds1 and ds2 - yes you will need a double buggy, if only for the times you want to strap them both down in a busy shop/walking by a road.

We had P&T and its amazing the amount of people that go on about not being able to see out of second seat, ds1 is meant to ride in front seat but asks to go in bottom seat cause he likes being able to climb in and out and prob has same amount of view as when he is in car - its really not an issue, and for little one you can hang toys in front of them

for newborns the lie flat bit with cocoon is also great, I used to put ds2 to sleep in cocoon tucked out of way at toddler groups, being bright red it ensured he was never trampled on!

insywinsyspider · 29/11/2008 21:07

I also tried the sling option but found I (1) had no where to put ds2 down when we got to toddler group and (2) ds1 found it frustrating as I was always reaching round ds2 to help him and couldn't pick him up - it felt like being pg again

dontcallmehon · 29/11/2008 21:10

I never used a double and have 19 months between my two. I used a sling and still do now dd2 is 14 months!

NumptyMum · 29/11/2008 21:18

Might be worth shopping around for slings and trying one out in advance - I'm borrowing a Scootababy hip carrier from a friend just now, and it works well for shortish journeys carrying DS (15mo) eg to nursery etc. See if there is a SlingMeet group that meets near you, post your request in advance of a meeting and someone may have a good sling to recommend that will suit either new babe or toddler (eg Mei tai). Oh, and you can pick up slings 2nd hand from various places - Rumplebums forum 'For Sale or Trade', or there's a Yahoo group (UKbabywearing swap).

Wisknit · 30/11/2008 10:47

17months between my DSs. I have a tandem that was a lifesaver if I was going to be lugging lots of shopping etc but it is murder on buses. If I was n't going to be carrying anything much I would take my sling and when DS1 got tired I would take DS2 out of buggy pop him into the sling and DS1 would go into buggy for a bit.
HTH

Hadeda · 02/12/2008 19:40

Thanks all - although I now have a much bigger problem in that DH thinks a double buggy is an unnecessary expense and won't even discuss the issue! Oh well, I have a few months to work on him...
Numptymum thanks so much for those sling links, I'll def take a look.

You need a double buggy, this is the same age gap that I have. Try ebay.

robino · 03/12/2008 09:22

Yes you need one! Or at least I did, and still do. DD1 is a willing walker but still gets tired v easily (in life generally actually!). I also use a sling and single. Picked up double for £20 at NCT sale, it's a bit big but does the job.

ChocFudgeCake · 03/12/2008 21:29

YES! Mine are 15 months apart. The double pushchair has been more than a blessing. Kids are 3 and 4 and even now in a cold and rainy day they sit and off we go to school It has been on the plane with us many times too.

jeanjeannie · 03/12/2008 22:28

Yep, you'll need a double buggy! Mine are 18mth apart and I got a cheap Phil & Teds from ebay. I kept single buggy though.

TBH I loathe the P&T I find it very heavy and weighty to move with the two stacked in it. And it's not so great for putting the shopping in! BUT it is slim and can get round the shops without getting stuck in the aisles

I try to keep times in the buggy to a minimum and if I'm only out with one of them then I always use the single buggy - especially with DD2 as she's now 6 mths old and I want her to have a nice view now and again.

onthewarpath · 04/12/2008 13:41

DD1 and DS2 were 20mths appart, I had pushchair for DD1 and sling for DS2 for space practicalities at home as well as on some pavements.

misshardbroom · 04/12/2008 17:08

yes, you do. Trust me.
