Tripp trapp highchairs - quick question(s)

Are they really worth the money? How do you stop a small baby (6mo) throwing themselves backwards out of it when it hardly has a back?

My dd is now 10 months - she rocks around and it has never moved. It is really robust and very balanced in design.

stillstanding · 25/11/2008 14:17

I love mine. And DS (21mths) certainly can't throw himself out of it. I would definitely buy it again but only because I like the look of it. It is a lot of money and you could easily get something a lot cheaper which would do the job.

FeelingLucky · 25/11/2008 14:17

Yes, worth every penny.
You need to get a baby set and harness for younger babies

Love ours. they are still used every day (dds now 6 and nearly 4)

flowerybeanbag · 25/11/2008 14:18

Assuming you have the baby set and your baby is strapped in, they can't throw themselves out. DS is now 18mo, when he is having a major strop he 'jumps' up and down so hard in his seat that he almost lifts the chair up. But no danger of it falling over or him going over the back, he is firmly strapped in.

cmotdibbler · 25/11/2008 14:19

Yes- well worth it. DS uses his as steps, something to stand at the sink and wash up on, and sits nicely at the table (is 2.6). We've used it from 6 months

Mine had a higher back bit with the baby set, so no chance of throwing backwards.

If you are worried, buy an Antilop from Ikea first, and then go to the Tripp Trapp later.

Tillyscoutsmum · 25/11/2008 14:19

DD hated hers - just really struggled to get her in and out of it.

The Antilop from Ikea is supposed to be a very similar design but much cheaper

TheMadHouse · 25/11/2008 14:21

I have two tripp traps and they are fantastic. Both of my boys used them from six months with the baby seat attachment and are still using them at 3,9 and 2.6.

They enable them to sit at the table at the correct hight, not just for eating, but writing and painting etc.

CatMandu · 25/11/2008 14:22

We still use ours and the baby I bought it for is 9!

miamla · 25/11/2008 14:23

another little question about thr tripp trapp, don't you miss not having a tray on the front when they're little?

TheMadHouse · 25/11/2008 14:25

No - I dont miss the try, they have a large tray, otherwise know as a table

TooMuchTV · 25/11/2008 14:35

We have two - one with a baby set and one without. Love them. Only used the back cushion for the minimum time (faffy to keep washing) and no need to have a seat cushion at all.

THe Ikea antilop is a completely different design - it leaves their legs dangling which I don't think is great for comfort/posture - but it is very cheap and easy to clean - great for occasional use e.g. at grandparents

hf128219 · 25/11/2008 14:38

They indeed have a large tray - thank heavens for vinyl tableclothes!

drivinmecrazy · 25/11/2008 14:42

Fantastic investment. Have two for DDs aged 3 &7. Friends fight to sit in them when they come for tea.
A bit of an inconvinience first few months of weaning, but so much better teaching them at an early age to sit at the table and join in the mealtimes

katiek123 · 25/11/2008 16:19

fab. spent a year in oz when kids 3 and 5 and the tripp trapps were the only item i missed while we were there - every mealtime!! kids now 7 and 5 and they're in constant use still. lack of tray occasionally bit annoying at baby stage but didn't notice it much. agree vinyl tablocoths FAB alternative!!!

BikeRunSki · 25/11/2008 18:20

OK Tripp Trapp fans, what is the highest seat height you can set it at? I am after a highchair enough for a breakfast bar (900mm high, the stools are 720mm high) and can't seem to find anything high enough.

cmotdibbler · 25/11/2008 20:11

It wouldn't be high enough for that I'm afraid. Reckon you could adapt the Antilop with some tent poles and a hacksaw to the perfect height though.

Would one of the high chairs that clip onto the table work ? The Phil and Ted ones they use in Wagamama for instance ?

taipo · 25/11/2008 20:15

We bought ours when dc were toddlers so no experience of using them for babies. They're still in constant use and in very good condition 5 years later so I think they're well worth the money.

blithedance · 25/11/2008 20:28

I'm a fan of the Antilop first, then freecycle it and get a Tripp Trapp at about 18mths. You can still attach a little harness if you have a wriggler.

The antilop costs LESS than the TT baby set and is ideal for the splodgy spoon banging stage.

Now I remember friends who had a kitchen breakfast bar, using a clip-on 3 prong highchair, that must be the way to go. When they are a little older... think you have found a rare gap in the baby-product market!

BarcodeZebra · 25/11/2008 20:31

They're great but do you have the wherewithal to pass the tricky exam before they let you buy one?

Hulababy · 25/11/2008 20:33

IMO yes, they are worth the money. Ours has so far had over 6 years use and it is still in great condition. It was used from DD being 5 months old and she uses it in chair mode now at 6y. DD, and nine of the babies/toddlers who have used ours at various times, ave managed to throw themselves out of it, knock it backwards, topple it, etc.

jeanjeannie · 25/11/2008 20:40

Fab - worth every penny and now buying another for DD2. So nice having them join you at the table and not stuck on their own with a tray out front.

mackerel · 25/11/2008 20:51

We have 4 children and a Tripp Trapp for each one -and not much money. It was just one of the few things we considerd worth investing in. All of ours sat up early and the Tripp Trapp was comfy for them -not the way they seem to slump down the back of conventional highchairs. Also they all loved being a oart of the table like theirsibling s and you can do that with this chair. Our 3 DDs all started to crawl out of the babyset bar by 1 so we did away with it and just have a harness on to stop the fidgeting about. Sometimes we don't use that and she just sits and eats like the others. Fab. chairs, v. stable, good for posture worth every penny!

BikeRunSki · 25/11/2008 22:35

Hmm yes. Those chairs that clip on the table. Just don't seem right. The failure would be too catastrophic if it happened. I want one with legs!

swanriver · 26/11/2008 00:02

Having read this thread, I might hang onto mine a bit longer. Feeling fed up because we are always tripping over our two. If you have a small kitchen beware of the sticking out lower limb! But now that we moved back to normal chairs, the 6 year olds are constantly swinging and tipping, so really the tt are much safer.
