I think my baby hates me. HV suggests Cranial Osteopath - does it work ?

My baby is 6 weeks old. She suffers usually at the same time of night and cries and feeds on and off the breast and punches me with her little fists, and kicks relentlessly for a few hours (6pm-11pm) until she passes out. I think it is trapped wind, but she burps beautifully and has some explosive farts/poos - sometimes after this crying episode before she passes out. I feel frustrated as I can't help her, but the way she glares at me I think she hates me anyway. Can this osteopathy actually help her, or will she grow out of it at 3/4 months anyway ? Any ideas ?

DD had a very traumatic birth and used to howl in the middle of the night. I took her to a cranial osteopath, and it seemed to help...

TheArmadillo · 05/11/2008 15:52

she doesn't hate you, she has no concept of hate at 6weeks old.

Most likely trapped wind. There are many things you can try.

Osteopathy can work.
Drink fennel tea.
Avoid all caffine (even chocolate)
Avoid spicy foods
Try infacol (works for some but not for others).

SOunds like she is developing colic.

castlesintheair · 05/11/2008 15:57

2 of mine were like this. Sound's like colic but you could see GP just to rule out gastric reflux (one of mine had the silent version and was doubled up in pain until diagnosed ). Cranial osteopathy is brilliant. My 6 yr old still has it.

And, your DD doesn't hate you. Noone tels you about the evening crying sessions before you have a baby. It doesn't last forever. 3 months tops.

Thanks for the tips. I have been eating bucket loads of chocolate (just craving it and amazed at the fact that I am still losing weight). I do love fennel tea and so I will drop my tetley fix. I will try to find an osteopath I guess. I am worried that they are not real doctors as one messed up my sister's neck (I know she was unlucky).

Cranial osteopathy worked for my DS (traumatic delivery). He was like a different child after 2 sessions. If in/near london would recommend the Osteopathic Centre for Children (a charity -they're wonderful).

Camomile tea also good for helping with trapped wind.

Good luck - it will get easier.

purpleduck · 05/11/2008 16:22

It worked for mine

I also drank lots of peppermint tea, so it would pass through to dd, and help her tummy.

Osteopathy was the thing that sorted it though.

The the paractitioner was hothothot

PsychoGuyFawkesMum · 05/11/2008 16:27

worked wonderfully on my DS1. He held himself sooooo tight for his first 6wks, and just screamed his little lungs out.

I really hated being his mum, and figured he hated me as much too.....and then my HV suggested Cranial osteopathy, and the very first time I took him he slept, properly slept, for the first time ever, for 4 hrs, and I could have kissed the woman who helped him and married her

It works, and for lots of babies, it works almost instantly. I still needed to take DS1 for a few weeks, but each time he got better and better until he was happy and smily al the time (when not hungry).

try it

karney · 05/11/2008 17:03

I had a rough time with DS1 for the first five weeks. He was very unsettled and sick.Went to a Cranial osteopath and noticed a difference almost straight away. Would def recommend it.Hopefully will work for you too

IWonderIfMamaGStillLovesMe · 05/11/2008 17:04

Your baby doesn't hate you.

My son had several cranio treatments and they were really good for him.

nannyL · 05/11/2008 18:38

i think cranial osteopathy is magic

had my 1st session in june this year (was in a car crash and really banged my head)... and i honstly cant believe how much better i felt...

i never realised they was anything worng at all but all of a sudden i felt much better

have decided that when i eventually have a baby its 1st ever trip out will be to a cranial osteopath

Guadalupe · 05/11/2008 18:40

Worked for us too.

My ds was exactly the same - we went to cranial osteopathy and tbh, we didn't see overnight results in terms of his crying 6pm-midnight, but he did start to sleep better after a few sessions (although of course, he was getting older).
He did genuinely sleep better and he also made this funny almost purring noise during the sessions (although the first session he cried through!).
I agree with nanny - if/when we have another, I will definitely take him/her to be checked by an osteopath.

TheProvincialLady · 05/11/2008 18:49

I see an ordinary osteopath and it makes a HUGE difference to how I feel so I cam quite open to the idea of cranial osteopaths for babies.

Having said that, chocolate and diet coke were really making my DS miserable as a tiny baby and when I cut them out for a few weeks the difference was amazing. It coudl also be reflux or even dairy allergy (this happened to a friend of mine). I would start with whichever is easiest for you to try first and then try alternatives if there is no improvement.

travellingwilbury · 05/11/2008 18:54

It is magic stuff . My first ds went to one after a friend suggested it because he was a forceps delivery . He did poo something chronic afterwards but it did definetely help the sleeping .
I did find it very hard not to giggle like a school girl while we were in there as it does look very odd but it worked so I didn't mind . It also helped his excema

we took ds2 to a chiroprctor following a very traumatic birth - 3 treatments later and he was like a different baby

insywinsyspider · 05/11/2008 22:28

go for it - I've taken ds1 to a chiropractor after he didn't sleep for first 6 weeks and it was magic, he slept though from 8 wks and ds2 to a ostesopath for help with his colic - I genuinely think it works but at the time I did it because it was something I could do for my baby, your baby doesn't hate you but if you are at the end of your tether then this is something positive you can do, I'd also recommend baby massage, learning that was a godsend for the days/nights when I'd run out of ideas of what to try next, I found it very calming x

flipflopper · 05/11/2008 22:54

Sorry to butt in, but what does a cranial osteopath actually do? I have been reccomended to one by my cousin who is into alternative therapy, for my 4 yr old who has bowel issues!

Really not sure if it would make any difference though, his problems seem to by psychological

Gemzooks · 06/11/2008 06:01

I wouldn't hurry to act. What you describe, colic and evening restlessness sounds so normal. My DS is an easy baby but around 6-12 weeks he had those evening crying sessions and I was at my wits end. Make sure you're getting enough food at that time etc, as it is so bloody hard having a baby of that age. OF course she doesn't hate you, by the way, she's just a tiny baby! It's very hard and you are doing very well, just remember it will all pass more or less by 4 months...

dinkystinky · 06/11/2008 09:52

IS about realigning the body Flipflopper - they actually treated me as well as DS. With DS, he had swallowed meconium and had breathing issues as a result (lungs not fully inflated, congestion etc) which was impacting on other things - some really gentle touching and manipulation (really didnt look like ANYTHING at all) sorted that. I had massive pelvic congestion from traumatic delivery and they helped realign my pelvis too. Both of us slept so much better after the sessions...

Guadalupe · 06/11/2008 10:13

I see a cranial osteopath every time I have a back problem too. It was the only thing that sorted out my shoulder after years of trouble with it. It's very gentle but, like dinky says, it seems to realign the body and it heals itself, or something. Works for me anyway and I know loads of people who swear by it.

loulou33 · 07/11/2008 09:37

it made no difference to ds1 but osteopath said he had no major probs for her to treat - he was colicky though. ds2 very unsettled and won't lie down except when deeply asleep at night. one session and he was much better - found probs with his back, neck and head - have a few more sessions to go so hoping it keeps improving. i would recommend it even if just to cross off the list of things to try.

OrangeKnickers · 07/11/2008 12:11

slightly off topic, have you thought of swaddling her? Ds slept much better when swaddled.

Harvey karp's Brilliant Book Baby Blisscan teach you a calming techique. It worked for us, although ds is quite good natured.

As for CO, two of my friends used them; one miracle change. The other; no change.

The miracle change was a baby who would not turn his head to his left at all. After one session at CO he was moving his head from side to side. Was quite startling.

Donkeyswife · 07/11/2008 12:40

Defnotyummymummy - I had the same problem wiht my second child. My son had mild colic, but my darling daughter, now 15 weeks had the most horrendous colic (all day and all night) from 3 weeks old until 12 weeks when it just stopped.

Here's what we did:

Infacol and gripe water - rubbish

Cammomile tea - great! (Just dip tea bag in boiled water then let cool - it sent our little oneto sleep immediately.)

Coleif - get from your gp on prescription, BRILLIANT! it;s an enzyme you put into milk, bit tricky with breasfeeding but we expressed and put milk in a teat with 4 drops then carried on breastfeeding.

My healthvisitor and a freind recommended s/cr osteopathy and it is the best thing ever. Not sure wher eyou are located, but if you can get to Clerkenwell in London there is the fantastic Children's Osteopathy centre. You pay what you can afford adn they worked magic on baby girl. Ok, she still was colicky at night, but much less so and the colic in the day stopped completeley.

Contact them on 0207 490 5510
or look at their website www.fpo.org.uk

Also, we found sitting her upright in a baby bjorn 123 chair brilliant. They're nto cheap but so worth the money for her sake and ours!

It WILL stop,(litterally our baby just stopped crying one day - blissful!!) as your baby's digestive system matures it decreases. But I totally understand your frustration. Your baby does not hate you! Don't blame yourself hon, it's stressful enough having a new baby and seeing your baby in distress and coping with constant crying is very trying for anyone. If you want to have a chat about this, CAT me.
