How many letters could your DC identify at 3 years?

just curious...

so if you put the letters of the alphabet in front of them and said, where's letter so-and-so... how many would they get right roughly?

None at all (3 dc). Not by age 4, either.
Two of them were reading 3+ years above actual age by middle of Yr2, though (preen moment)...
The boys knew numbers 1-9 by about 3yo, though not the girl.

just turned 3 yo - knows 7 letters. b (first letter of his brother's name), d (daddy), m (first letter of his name, amd mummy), o (it's a circle), p (for Papa, we also speak french at home), s (for snake), and x (don't know why). Recognises 2, 6 and 7 (2 because of his age, 6 because he gets up at 6 oclock and 7 because that's when we go upstairs. He learned the number on the oven clock).

DS is 5 and started in Reception in September.

Have no idea what letters he could recognise visually. From what he tells me he knows quite a lot of his letters phonically.

Am astounded at this thread.

Do you really "put letters in front of" your 3 year olds?

Why?

kittywise · 01/11/2008 22:14

None.

Why should they?

LadyG · 01/11/2008 22:23

Most but gets b d p q mixed up. We have lots of alphabet books richard scarry Babar etc and has picked up from there knew most phonetically at first but seems to have picked some letter names up from annoying baby computer thing bought for his birthday (not by me). Seems to be a real variation at nursry-some (well one or two) reading and some still working on letters. Hates doing anything that seems like 'work' at home though eg when i try to spell out words in books phonetically "Don't read mummy!"

princessmel · 01/11/2008 22:28

dd is 3.3 and can't recognise any letters afaik. But I dont test her on this. She's 3!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/11/2008 22:41

Its so variable! dd was reading when she was 3 but havent the foggiest how as she wasn't taught. It actually really doesnt matter as she can't throw a ball or swim to save her life.

Ds1 is just turning 3. He can't recognise any letters, or numbers,as far as I know and has no interest at all in doing so.

He can, however, recognise and name all the Thomas the Tank engine trains, right down to the obscure ones you never see on telly. This skill has led to much positive social interaction with similarly obsessed little boys and is therefore more valuable IMO

rolledhedgehog · 02/11/2008 15:23

DD is 3 and recognises 1 - the first letter of her name.

When DS1 was 3 he knew none and he is now in Year 1 and top of his class in reading.

I don't try and teach my children letters until they show an interest.

MadameCastafiore · 02/11/2008 15:26

DD - knew all her letters and sounds by the time she was 3.5.
DS knows M A and X and he is 4 in 16 days time.

AccidentalMum · 02/11/2008 20:52

none!

TeeBee · 03/11/2008 10:24

Both my Ds' knew all leters (upper and lowercase) before they were 2. I just put letters on the fridge. DS2 had one of leapfrog things and picked up most the sounds from that.

mamaspanx · 03/11/2008 13:05

1 or 2 but was more interested in numbers...counting up and down

Marne · 03/11/2008 13:10

Dd1- around 15 letters and recognise her name.

Lazycow · 03/11/2008 13:22

none and he is 4 next month (actually he can sometimes recognise the first letter of his name)

mamaspanx · 03/11/2008 13:29

yes should have added that theres not much change at 4.4 here....the letters in his name, hes just not interested AT ALL, and i'm not interested in standing over him

hunkermunker · 03/11/2008 21:56

I put letters in front of my not-quite-2yo and he learnt them all.

I didn't do it deliberately though, so does that make it OK?

Neither of mine could recognise any letters at 3, only numbers (I never even tried to get them to know letters tbh)

Ds is 4.8 and can only recognise the first letter of his first name.

Why do you ask?
