How many letters could your DC identify at 3 years?

just curious...

so if you put the letters of the alphabet in front of them and said, where's letter so-and-so... how many would they get right roughly?

Starfall is a learn to read website (American)

www.starfall.com DS finds the letters, stories and games really interesting

Poisson Rouge is a French site (but with an English version for the alphabet) which is educational but I find more mindmelting for the parent than Starfall. I like the numbers games on Poisson Rouge though.

DD knew none at 3.
Its only been in the last few months that she has started to learn them and now she's in Reception, she knows them all.

Dd was 3 last week and knows them all. But she can only count to 5.

yomellamoHelly · 31/10/2008 15:07

None. Ds1 is now (just) 5 and knows them all plus most of the phonic sounds (oa,ai etc.). At 3 he'd only just started showing an interest in picking up crayons and the like.

Mrsboring - same here. Had a starfall and letters phase early on - about 2ish but then she lost interest. She's starting to get interested again now (3) as she's interested in reading but just starting to figure it out. Knows all letters but sometimes gets mixed up. Driving me slightly batty when reading with her at present as she wants to know what the different punctuation marks mean which is rather hard to explain prior to reading and very distracting from the story.

belgo · 31/10/2008 16:41

none of them.

racmac · 31/10/2008 16:54

ds1 knew none until about 4.5
ds2 turned 3 in Sept knows s, a, t, o and can count to 10 (sometimes!) but he's only learnt cos really keeps asking constantly

Reallytired · 31/10/2008 18:06

My son knew none of the letter sounds at the age of three, but did know how to play and take turns nicely.

Romy7 · 31/10/2008 18:35

dh taught dd1 all her letters in a weekend when she was 18 months and i went away for the first time. it was really freaky tbh. i came back and he proudly scattered the wooden letters all over the floor and shouted letters at random, and she dug around in the pile to find them.

ds1 and dd2 taught themselves to read at nursery lol, so mine just seem to catch onto letters quick. i just wish they were as quick to be dry at night, as i'm bored of medication, enuresis alarms and endless laundry...

i was oddly proud of the fact that the golden arches were always referred to as 'm for mummy' with a squeal of delight from the car, rather than 'can we go to macdonalds?'

nannyL · 31/10/2008 19:03

my charge is 3 years and 1 month

he can do almsot all of the letters of the alpahbet now and can count reliably up to 20.

nell12 · 31/10/2008 19:06

dd is just 4 and can write her name but that is it.

She can, however play, problem solve, draw with creativity, share (up to a point) co-operate and talk and listen to others

Far more important IMHO

Smithagain · 31/10/2008 21:00

DD1 - about 10 at just turned 3.

DD2 - just one.

Both brought up much the same, both started nursery at exactly same age. Just to demonstrate that it's pretty random!

Reallytired · 31/10/2008 21:13

Is there any big advantage to knowing lettter sounds at the age of three compared to four or five? At the age of six my son's reading is fanastic inspite of the fact that was not interested in reading until he was four years old.

hunkermunker · 31/10/2008 21:17

DS1 - all of them (from 22mo).

DS2 - none of them (he's 2.9).

motherinferior · 31/10/2008 21:19

Er, I should think none of them. They were three. Maybe they learned some at pre-school. No idea. Shouldn't think so.

hunkermunker · 31/10/2008 21:22

DS1's were upper case and he learnt them from watching Countdown while I was establishing bfing with DS2. He was fascinated by letters and numbers in a way DS2 doesn't seem to be. He's a very bookish sort of lad - although DS2 "reads" stories to himself and is captivated by actual books a bit more than DS1 is.

DS2 can count well now but doesn't seem to recognise numbers - again, DS1 could do that.

DS1 was recognising logos from 17mo though - Argos and Homebase were particular favourites

Pollyanna · 31/10/2008 21:24

dd3 is 3.10. She recognises P.

That's it!

Plonker · 31/10/2008 21:27

Dd1 - letters in her name and in mum/dad

Dd2 - all of them

RottenOtter · 31/10/2008 21:28

not crossed my mind

MrsMattie · 31/10/2008 21:29

DS is 3.8 and recognises them all, but he is a complete geek with a photographic memory. Bless 'im.

BarcodeZebra · 31/10/2008 21:29

27

simpson · 31/10/2008 21:30

Ds is 3.2 and recognises about 7 letters.

He is better with numbers and counting TBH.

But he has always been very into books.

Just wish he was as enthusiastic about food

ja9 · 31/10/2008 21:30

just the ones in his first name - only 4 of them.
