Are you as rubbish as me at doing your dd's hair up nice?

My 18-month-old has hair from hell. All fluffy and static at the back. Looks like Bobby Charlton's comb-over at the front.

I try to do pony tails and pig tails. She pulls them out. I put a cute clip in, it might stay in for half an hour then will have either fallen out or been eaten by her (probably).

I don't want to get her hair all cut off - she already gets called a boy all the time. I want cute pig tails!!!!!

All the other girls at toddlers look fab. How do their mums (or dads, is it??) do it?

Where am I going wrong...?

I'm sure they'd get some takers if they put a course on at college about this!

ooh I'd love to be able to plait prperly too.

I can do those "normal" plaits at the sides but thats it

DD is now 9 and has down hair, ponytail or headband

how do you get it to stay if you have to plait and teh hair's really long, though, Cali?

i think i must not be pulling it tightly enough and i can never finish the plait without the top coming loose.

also, i don't know how to start a plait from the very top of her head.

i feel we're being cheated, because long, flowing hair like hers is just made for taking a plait and she loves them!

today she chastised me because 'i only have a ponytail!' as we were running late for her bus this morning.

ledodgy · 24/10/2008 17:55

With slippy hair it's easier to braid or plait it when wet. It also stops all those fly away bits too.

MamaG · 24/10/2008 17:57

I want to be able to do french plaits on DD

My mate used to do them on her and she looked lovely. When I do it they're too loose and all fall out

MrsBadger · 24/10/2008 17:57

this is a bit in depth - the pictures are much more use than the words

the basic and the French braid are both worth learning

MamaG · 24/10/2008 17:59

the loaf of bread braid

I fpund that cutting my DS's hair (well, getting it professionally!) thickend up his hair really well. It was all fine and comb-overy before, but 5 months later he has a fine head of hair.
It may be short and boylike for a couple of months, but it will be worth it. Plus, there are bound to be some cute little girls hats around soon!

i had a friend whose parents were Jamaican and she could plait 'white girl hair' so that it would stay for days.

stung like hell, though! she pulled hard.

I am absoloutley hopeless and dd is such a girly girl and I was such a tomboy.

finknottle · 24/10/2008 18:28

expat - if you can't get to the bottom of the plait without the top coming loose, then make a ponytail and plait it. Half-way house, but quicker & better for fine long hair. Esp on school days, you can practise French braids at the weekend Helps if the hair isn't freshly washed.

MamaG · 24/10/2008 18:36

My DD squeals like a stuck pig if I pull her hair whilst plaiting

expatinscotland · 24/10/2008 18:48

fink and all, thanks for the tips.

tomorrow is going to be a blustery, horrible day, so we need a variety of activities to do.

we've got makeup and dress up planned, and making a 'house' out of putting a blanket on the table and crafts, so i think i'll have another go at plaiting DD1's hair.

it's past the middle of her back now.

but i usually just put it in bunches and plait those.

MamaG · 25/10/2008 17:00

Have you plaited successfully expat? Iwant to do DDs but she refused

FiveGoMadInDorset · 25/10/2008 17:03

I have given a pile of hair bands and a brush to her nursery she comes home looking lovely everyday
