Are you as rubbish as me at doing your dd's hair up nice?

My 18-month-old has hair from hell. All fluffy and static at the back. Looks like Bobby Charlton's comb-over at the front.

I try to do pony tails and pig tails. She pulls them out. I put a cute clip in, it might stay in for half an hour then will have either fallen out or been eaten by her (probably).

I don't want to get her hair all cut off - she already gets called a boy all the time. I want cute pig tails!!!!!

All the other girls at toddlers look fab. How do their mums (or dads, is it??) do it?

Where am I going wrong...?

i used detangler and serum in dd's seriously curly hair at about 18 months
It was either that or cut out matted lumps.

It's not like she's putting highlights in or using straighteners

PuppyMonkey · 24/10/2008 16:01

Troutpout.. I wonder will you get told off too...

Can't say it's mucked up dd's hair at all. She's nearly 6 now

NoBiggy · 24/10/2008 16:02

The local college does an evening class in barbering, but not in plaiting.

And good god, do I need that one.

Troutpout · 24/10/2008 16:02

Jeez...mn has blardy hair police now!

OneRainyDay · 24/10/2008 16:02

She's still a baby, deciding she must have have lovely smooth neat hair is setting a nasty precedent for the future.

Plus you seem far too concerned with what other children ad mothers do.

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 24/10/2008 16:04

You do talk b*llocks, OneRainyDay.

expatinscotland · 24/10/2008 16:07

trip trap.

give it up, OneRainy.

it's tiresome.

i use conditioner on DD2's hair, together with Nitty Gritty comb every other day, even though she's 2 because her older sister once brought home nits.

put that in your pipe and smoke it.

mumnosbest · 24/10/2008 16:08

My 13 month has very messy curly hair but I love it! She just looks cute and scruffy. Now and then I put a little clip in to keep the hair off her face. The trick is get tiny ones so they stay in and distract her so she doesn't realise she has a clip in her hair, so doesn't pull it out. Make the most before she's demanding different hairstyles. I dread being asked to do a french plait one day. I wouldn't know where to start

PuppyMonkey · 24/10/2008 16:09

PMSL ORD... now YOU'RE joking aren't you?

Have you never heard of the term "light hearted thread"? My OP was supposed to be, you know, tongue in cheek... I'm cross that I can't get DD's hair nice. But, you know, I don't lie awake worrying about it or anything! Just thought I might get some tips on MN...

Oh I love it, I'm now being called a troll?

Did I miss the memo that mumsnet was a big love in today. Are we all still in mourning for cod ffs?

BouncingTurtleSkulls · 24/10/2008 16:14

My ds (10mo) has mad hair, I wet his hair brush and attempt to do something about it, but it is kind of hanging in his eyes!
DH has been on at me to cut his hair, but it just seems too bizarre to me to cut baby hair!

Should I cut it? And exactly how are you mean to cut a 10mo's hair anyway

OneRainyDay · 24/10/2008 16:14

Seriously if I ever had the time or inclination to troll it wouldn't be about fecking toddlers hair.

Troutpout · 24/10/2008 16:15

oh i see

Welcome to mn OneRainy.
A bit of jealousy maybe?.. wild troll hair perhaps?
I've heard mousse is good

PuppyMonkey · 24/10/2008 16:16

I'm never usually in the love-ins - that's for sure!

I'm beyond crap at doing my 2-year-old's hair. I thought it wqas because she had awkward, tangly, fluffy hair, but then she came back from my friend's house with utterly gorgeous, perfect bunches. It's me. I'm the rubbish factor.

I use that leave-in de-tangler most days.

Oh, and I put a few highlights in when it gets darker during the winter of course, but who doesn't?

PuppyMonkey · 24/10/2008 16:45

shall we swap techniques cauldronfrau. I'd love to be able to plait and I could show you all the different ways to comb my ds's very short hair (without any prducts lol

CatIsSleepy · 24/10/2008 16:58

don't think i did anything with dd's hair at 18 months...still don't do much these days
she hates having it brushed...these days she will just about tolerate a pony-tail occasionally. Am rubbish at doing these though and it usually ends up wonky/messy...

poor dd-I'll have to get better when she goes to pre-school

expatinscotland · 24/10/2008 17:43

oooo, i want to learn to plait properly.

DD1 has long, straight hair. thing is, it is pretty slippy.
