DD spontaneously potty training (she's nearly two) umm do I encourage this?

I'd not planned to start till she was two and a half but this morning she found a potty in the cupboard and asked to 'wee' so I took her clothes off and she actually urinated into it! .

She then asked for it four more times during the day and while she didn't produce anything, each time she sat there saying 'need a poo' and obviously trying to do one

I have a 12 week old so I am really unsure whether to encourage this because rushing to the loo every five minutes is difficult. But I don't want to discourage her efforts and am unreasonably proud of her for having picked up what a potty is for from her book (Nappy Duck and Potty Pig).

Oh bless her. I would go for it if she is showing interest. It will be tricky for a while with a 12 week old possibly but then think of the bliss of only one in nappies.

IamAhungryTROLL · 10/10/2008 20:34

yes yes yes yes yes

I waited for mine to ask, and they were all (bar DS1) dry within a week!!!

go for it

LackaDAISYcal · 10/10/2008 20:35

wow wmmc....I would let her go for it if she is ready.

Can you get a few cheap potties and have them strategically round the house so she has ready access and it saves you running to the loo with her all the time?

What a clever big girl she is, especially as new babies are meant to cause some natural regression in older children.

12 weeks already . where does the time go?

yeah i think so...if you can?

we had a potty in each of the three main rooms downstairs, and spent a couple of days jsut following his lead.

i put a nappy on for when we were out and about...and sometimes he would ask to do a wee!

however having said that...you could keep on with the nappy for your convenience.

oh blimey i think im wasting your time and mine ...i have no idea! (and not drunk either!)

whomovedmychocolate · 10/10/2008 20:37

Come to think of it, her nappies bar one have been completely dry all day as well.

How long do I have to wee alongside her btw - she seems to prefer it if we go together (along with commentary 'mummy poo smells!')

I picked up a second potty for the upstairs bathroom at the supermarket and we have one of those internal loo seat things with handles but she seems happiest on the potty at the minute.

Was v funny this morning she picked up her potty with the wee in it and chased DH round the house with it because he was on the phone when she came out and wanted to show him

I think you have to go with the flow on this one.

TBH I think it might have something to do with tandem feeding - bear with me - she has a needed and managed to gain a clear understanding of being a big girl who can do things the baby can't, like eating food. She's seen the potty in the book, presumably shes seen you sit on the loo and she's taking the next logical step

Does that sound really mad?

DeJaVous · 10/10/2008 20:41

Ooops, went to DD and forgot to refresh before posting...

PsychoAxeMurdererMum · 10/10/2008 20:43

seriously, as I said before, go for it. she seems to know, and she seems happy with it, so go for it.

whomovedmychocolate · 10/10/2008 20:55

Okay, you're all right, I guess we are now formally a family with potties! DeJaVous - you may have hit the nail on the head there. She has said 'Olly poo pants, Poppy poo potty' (she has only just started to talk and hasn't grasped sentences yet) so maybe she's just worked it out.

beansontoast · 10/10/2008 20:58

she sounds fab

DeJaVous · 10/10/2008 20:58

It really does seem that way to me

DD will be 18 1/2 months when DC2 comes so I don't think I'll be sharing this particular unexpected benefit. Hopefully there will be others

whomovedmychocolate · 10/10/2008 21:05

DeJaVous - honestly, the first ten days DD was a little shit challenging . But since then it's been fine. There is a great couple of books 'there's a house in mummy's tummy'. 'getting ready for baby' and 'my new baby' which were really helpful in explaining it to DD. Particularly the latter two, they have no words just pictures and DD still loves them.

Thanks for the book tips, I'll try and find them. It didn't occur to me there would be specific books, how daft is that

roffle at "go with the flow"

good luck!

DeJaVous · 10/10/2008 21:31

LOL Wallace - unintentional pun unfortunately!

THanks WMMC, I'm off to order them

whomovedmychocolate · 11/10/2008 09:50

DeJaVous - how pregnant are you? I have one of those (frankly not very good) Angelsounds doppler things - tots love listening to the baby in mummy's tummy - you're welcome to it FFP if you want it?

OP posts:
DeJaVous · 11/10/2008 11:36

It's still early days, just 6 weeks, so I'm very much still in the 'wait and see if s/he decides to stay' phase.

I'd really like it, but superstitious as it sounds, I'd rather not tempt fate by having one before I get to 12 weeks safe and sound

Would you mind if I ask you about it again in a few weeks on the P&N thread, if I'm still in the race, that is?

I hope you don't think I'm being rude

whomovedmychocolate · 11/10/2008 11:49

No that's absolutely fine! And I have fingers crossed for you - I don't think you are being rude at all - I miscarried before both children each time a month before so I can completely understand your need to wait! Also there is no point with the Angelsounds till you are in the third trimester!

My dd1 potty trained at 2ish. DD2 did it at 20 months. I just went along with it tbh. Night time too

I was BF dd2 at the time and just had a potty near where I was sitting.

(must be the tandem feeding I say ! - I tandem feed for nearly two years.

DeJaVous · 11/10/2008 11:55

Thanks ever so much WWMC! I'll be back to you in a few weeks all being well

I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriages, it must have been really tough.

Twelvelegs · 11/10/2008 19:59

yes, my little girl did this and was in pants in the day from 20 months!

whomovedmychocolate · 12/10/2008 12:33

She did her first poo in the potty today - she's so proud of herself (and we are obviously proud of her) she just phoned granny to tell her (which was a bit of a shock for granny since she didn't talk at all two weeks ago and said 'DD did poo in potty' very clearly)

My little girl is growing up

DeJaVous · 12/10/2008 19:28

Wow! That is swift progress

She's definitely a cleaver one!
